M (wwwgoodreadscomprofilem) | 337 comments The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (also known as the Stockholm Conference) was an international conference convened under United Nations auspices held in Stockholm, Sweden from June 5-16, 1972.
It was the UN's first major conference on international environmental issues, and marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics.

The conference was opened and addressed by the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme and secretary-general Kurt Waldheim to discuss the state of the global environment. Attended by the representatives of 113 countries, 19 inter-governmental agencies, and more than 400 inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, it is widely recognized as the beginning of modern political and public awareness of global environmental problems.

Apart from increasing awareness of environmental issues among public and governments (for example, many governments subsequently created Ministries for the Environment and/or national agencies for environmental monitoring and regulation), the Stockholm Conference laid framework for future environmental cooperation; led to the creation of global and regional environmental monitoring networks and the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme.

The " World Environment Day 2010 " Theme is “ Biodiversity — Ecosystems Management and the Green Economy ”

In The US, Pittsburgh has been selected as the North American host city by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to join World Environment Day 2010.

A year ago, we have celebrated " The World Environment Day " with Yann Arthus Bertrand's film "Home", a visually stunning movie with a lot of sense and intelligence.

"....Waterfalls, water ...... rivers, seas, oceans, glaciers ....The cycle is never broken. There's always the same quantity of water on Earth. All the successive species on Earth have drunk the same water. The astonishing matter that is water..... " Constituting about 70% of the planet's surface, water is essential for life on Earth.
" One of the most unstable of all. It takes a liquid form as running water, gaseous as vapor or solid as ice. Lighter than water, the ice floats. It forms a protective mantle against the cold, under which life can go on "

A few days ago, on June 5th 2010, " The World Environment Day " has focused on Biodiversity and Water, today " The World Oceans Day " celebrate Oceans' projects . Water is a precious resource which need protection.
