Jason (foreverjuly) | 176 comments Hello, I'm about to place another book order, and I'm anxiously awaiting your recommendations to help me find some great new stories in the YA fantasy genre! It'd be great if it was something somewhat recent. Thank you!

On a similar note, I've been thinking about Pullman's Sally Lockhart series. Any fans out there?

Thanks, I love supporting independent authors (because I am one). You should make a goodreads page so I can add it to my list. Who did you work with on the editing? Are there any reviews?

message 4: by Alan (new)

Alan (coachmt) | 72 comments I'm in the process of getting it listed. I have a long time friend who is also an editor. There are some comments on the first couple of chapters which are posted in my writing on my bio page. Thanks in advance for having a look.

Jenny (narcisse) Your bookshelf is a bit underpopulated, so I don't know what you have and haven't read! So I'm going to assume that you haven't read anything except the Chronicles of Prydain which are on your shelf and Harry Potter because who the hell hasn't read that?
Some of these are a little older like the Chronicles of Prydain. Some are newish or recent. Some have females for main characters, which some guys don't like, though I did avoid the ones that are "girly". Anyways, here's a list:

Neil Gaiman stuff:
Coraline by Neil Gaiman The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman
and you may or may not want to count this as YA
Stardust by Neil Gaiman

Diana Wynne Jones (any of her books, but I am particularly fond of the ones with Howl in them):
Howl's Moving Castle (Castle, #1) by Diana Wynne Jones Castle in the Air (Castle, #2) by Diana Wynne Jones House of Many Ways (Castle, #3) by Diana Wynne Jones

Percy Jackson:
The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2) by Rick Riordan The Titan's Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #3) by Rick Riordan The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4) by Rick Riordan The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series #5) by Rick Riordan

The Abhorsen Trilogy:
Sabriel (The Abhorsen Trilogy, #1) by Garth Nix Lirael (The Abhorsen Trilogy, #2) by Garth Nix Abhorsen (The Abhorsen Trilogy, #3) by Garth Nix

Jason (foreverjuly) | 176 comments Wow, thanks so much Jenny, that is hugely helpful. Yeah, I still haven't gone through and back-dated everything I've read before joining goodreads. But I didn't have to look past your Neil Gaiman suggestions to find a winner. I can't wait to get myself more acquainted with this great list.

What are you currently reading?

message 7: by Jess (new)

Jess (jhuch) | 30 comments You should definitely read The Graveyard Book by Gaiman! I also would second Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore.

Thanks for your thoughts, Jess! I definitely think I'm sold on the Graveyard Book. What have you been reading lately?

message 9: by Heidi (new)

Heidi The Graveyard Book is excellent on audio (read by the author)

message 10: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) Right now, I'm working my way through a couple of things that I have to read. Once I get back to what I want to read, next up are:

Loved Knife of Never Letting Go (after I got into it) as well as Unwind. Good choices!

Hey Becca, THANK YOU! I look forward to checking out those titles. I'm not usually a dragon person, but I like the cover of the Dragon Champion book.

How is the Heir Chronicles series? I keep seeing the 3-book set but haven't bought it yet. Worth a read?

Don't know how I missed that, but I picked up a copy! I really think I have enough books now to reach my quota for the month. Ha!

message 18: by Alan (new)

Alan (coachmt) | 72 comments Thanks Peep. I realized today that there are some formatting issues with the epub version but I should have them straightened out tonight or tomorrow. So if you have troubles with it, you should be able to go and get the revised version.

I've only read the first one and I really liked it so I have the rest of the series on my tbr pile. I thought the story was original, predictable at times, but very entertaining.

So worth a read? Not sure whether i should get the 3-book set. In case it turns out that book 2 and book 3 are not as good as the first one.

message 23: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments I thought the first one was worth the read and I'll read the second one soon. If you don't mind waiting, I'll let you know what I think. Too bad you don't have a library round there so you could check it out before you decide to buy.

I don't mind waiting:-). There are a couple of book rental places but none of them ever have the books I want!

message 25: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Cool I'll keep you updated. Wizard Heir, which is the next in the series is about tenth on my tbr pile right now, so I should get to it in about 2 or 3 weeks.

Great! Thanks. By the way, how do you read so fast? I seem to be really slowing down!

message 27: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments I don't really have anything to do besides take care of a three-year-old, read and clean. I'm a stay at home mom plus I've always been a speed reader. My mom reads three times as fast as me. She's read over a hundred books so far this year and she'll probably round out the year somewhere near five hundred. I get my reading skills and love from her.

message 30: by Jason (new)

Jason (foreverjuly) | 176 comments No, definitely not too late! I'm always game for some recommendations. I look forward to getting the details on these and seeing if they catch my interest. People do seem to be talking about Hunger Games everywhere. Thanks!

message 31: by Chachic (new)

Chachic I know, The Hunger Games is a huge thing here on Goodreads and it has also gotten a lot of buzz in the blogosphere. Maybe you should wait for the third book to come out in August before you read the series so you can read it in one go.

As far as recommendations:
The Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare
City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass

The Dream Catcher Series by Lisa McMann is also good
Wake, Fade, Gone

Shiver was also a good read for me, with the sequel Linger coming out soon.

The Giver series is also worth a read
Messenger, Gathering Blue, The Giver

I definitely love reading straight through things, but it's not that big a deal. I'll definitely have to get my hands on a copy soon. I also love finishing books and then immediately seeing the movie afterward (so I can act condescending and snooty). :)

message 34: by Chachic (new)

Chachic Hahaha I'm like that as well! Sometimes, I don't want to watch a movie unless I've read the book.
