Ok folks, you know the drill. Have at it!!

message 2: by David (new)

David (sfdavide) | 6 comments I just started this and think it is the funniest book I have read in a long time and that is just after 25 pages. I think I am going to love this book

message 3: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I'm not normally one for rereading books, but I've been intending to reread this one since the moment I first finished it. I'll be starting this one up this afternoon once I reach a good hiatus-point with Infinite Jest.

sfdavide, that's just the tip of the iceberg. The hilarity will only grow stronger.

Christopher Moore is strong, like bear.

message 4: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Oh wow, I had forgotten so much about this book! I am so glad that I am rereading it now. The entire riff on Beta Males and their place in society is so hilarious.

Minty Fresh is my hero, I want to be like him when I grow up.

message 5: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Logan, I wasnt sure how I felt about Minty Fresh when I was first introduced to him. The more I read, the more I pictured him as the puppet that Jeff Dunham uses in his act. the puppet is called Sweet Daddy D....http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fus...

I love this guy and his act by the way!!

message 6: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Lori, that's hilarious! I totally pictured Minty as similar to that too.

****POTENTIAL SPOILER****
I was struck last night while reading this about all the interconnections between A Dirty Job and the rest of the Moore-universe. I remember the first time I read the book being so confused when the "striking redhead in fuck-me pumps" came into the second-hand shop and just writing her off as another Death Merchant- until I read You Suck! and realized that she was Jody. Not to mention the omnipresent Inspector Rivera, who's been wrapped up in events in from Lust Lizard through to Bloodsucking Fiends.

My wife just told me that Minty Fresh was in Coyote Blue, the only Moore I haven't read yet. Well, I guess that means a trip to the bookstore today.

message 7: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments A friend of mine who is a BIG MOORE fan told me he does that throughout all his books. He intertwines characters and at some spots your like "okay that was totally random " until you read one of his other books then you are like " OOOOHHH ok now it all makes sense".

BTW I am loving this book ...it's awesome!!! I am only part way through Part 2 (the goggies just came on the scene).

message 8: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I finished this last night and am very tempted to pick it up again for another quick reread. I had forgotten so much of the story since I'd read it initially.

****SPOILER*****

I had completely forgotten the ending and I have to admit that I still really don't like it. The final battle with the Morigan and Orcus seems really perfunctory and just tossed off. I also hate that Asher dies. Sure, he can be a cute fuzzy Squirrel Person, but that's just not as satisfying.

Still, I got to read possibly my favorite line in all of literature:

"Not in the butt! Not in the butt! Not in the butt!"

message 9: by ScottK (last edited Jun 10, 2008 01:54PM) (new)

ScottK | 535 comments Hey guys I finished last night and I completely agree with Logan.... the book was great and I LOLed many times. I feel as though the battle between the Morigan and Orcus could have been a bit more exciting. And Yeah I even hate that Charlie died. I figured out pretty easily who the big D was too. But overall it was a great book, something completely off from what I would normally read.Having said that I will be looking into more of Moore's books to read. Any suggestions as to where I should go next with Him ??

message 10: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments well, considering you just finished A Dirty Job, I'd recommend going for Bloodsucking Fiends next followed by it's sequel You Suck! There are some fun parallels with A Dirty Job that I still get a good laugh out of.

But then, considering you're in Kihei, you may want to give Fluke a try. It's about a whale researcher on Maui who sees a humpback whale with the words "bite me" written on it's fail fins and all of the assorted insanity that follows. Some great Hawaiian characters that I'm sure you've run into more than once on the beaches.

message 11: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments Alrighty then since I have met some "interesting " locals I guess I will look for Fluke today ...I get to go to the Borders this afternoon . Thanks!

message 12: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Started this last night, about 60 or so pages in and liking it - I love the way they talk!

message 13: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) Sorry ... began listening to this on my commute to and from work and ended up returning it to my library. Just couldn't get into it's weirdness; however, I do have to say I laughed at a few parts! Maybe I should have stuck it out ... but too much to read, too little time!

message 14: by Mandy (new)

Mandy The more I read of this book the more I like it. I hardly ever laugh out loud with books but in the last 10 minutes I have twice, so funny.

message 15: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Moore has a fantastic imagination. He creates the most interesting, hilariously HUMAN characters... Their flaws and failings are the best parts of them!

I will eventually get more Moore,(ive read 5 of his novels) he is one of a kind, thats for sure!

message 16: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Finished this last night and whoa, I had some freaky dreams!! Great book.

***POSSIBLE SPOILER***

Can't say I was surprised by the ending though, I kinda had that pegged.

message 17: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I've just started this, so have skipped over all the posts, but had to say... I'm only on page 5, and already I'm finding it hilarious! I can't believe I've never read anything by this author...

message 18: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Kirsty...BE WARE... He is very addictive. I chewed through 5 of his novels in like two months.... i just couldnt get enough....

message 19: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments wow, that's a lot from one author! I can't put this down at the moment... always a sign of a great book!

message 20: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
I know it seems like alot, but when you look at how interlinked they are, they kind of seem like one novel... one really really loooonnnggg novel :)

message 21: by David (new)

David (sfdavide) | 6 comments One of Three Fingers Hu's grandchildren: Cindy Lou Hu. LOL.

message 22: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I loved the Jesus joke, made me laugh out loud and I passed it on to my partner and he loved it and reckons he's going to use it, so funny!!!

message 23: by Kathy McC (new)

Kathy McC About 1/2 of the way into this book. Bizarre is the word that comes to mind. I have not read anything by Moore previously, so really was not prepared for his unbelievable imagination. Minty Fresh is becoming my favorite.

message 24: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Just finished. I think that Minty Fresh might be my favorite too.

message 25: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I just read the 'fight' scene on page 84, and laughed so much my eyes were streaming... I love this book!

message 26: by Kathy McC (new)

Kathy McC Finished it. I can't say that I loved it, but I'm glad I read it. It took me outside my reading box and there were parts that were enjoyable. Minty Fresh saved the storyline for me. I will definitely try others by him as I found his creative energy amazing. Any suggestions for what you think his best book might be for me to "cut more teeth" on?

message 27: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Kathy, while it's removed from the same universe as the rest of the Moore books his greatest feat thus far is, arguably, Lamb: A Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. Hilarious from start to finish and delightfully irreverent. Plus, it introduces Raziel, who is the titular character of The Stupidest Angel.

I'm going to start on Coyote Blue next. After the endurance challenge of Infinite Jest I need something light and fluffy.

message 28: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I inadvertently stumbled across Christopher Moore's MySpace page today and have yet to stop laughing.

http://www.myspace.com/theauthorguy

Be sure to check out his blog posts about why the Kindle isn't a complete POS and him trying to make some money by getting people to rub fellow Logan-favorite Neil Stephenson's bald head.

OR, you can go to his regular web page and see the Dirty Job-related M&Ms that he tried to get made:

http://www.chrismoore.com

I've really lost track of the number of times that my wife and I yell "not in the butt" to each other from across the bar and really just confuse the hell out of everyone.

message 29: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Thanks for the links Logan. I had seen his myspace page before, and then I guess just forgot about it. Its interesting to see that he writes on there in almost the same tone as he does within his novels. He seems like he'd be a ball to be around....

Kathy, I really liked The Stupidest Angel. Its more than just a christmas story. It was my first Moore novel, and had me laughing out loud many many times... you really should check that one out!

message 30: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I'm kind of having a hard time getting hooked by the book.I enjoy the humour and Charlie is adorable,as is the baby Sophie.Moore's definition of the Beta male is not to be missed but I think that lately I've been reading heavier stuff so I'm having a difficult time switching gears.

message 31: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I finished this yesterday, and was really sad to put it down. I'll definitely be looking at his other stuff!

message 32: by Sherry (last edited Jun 27, 2008 11:31AM) (new)

Sherry I enjoyed the book but thought the ending was a bit silly and disappointing.

***SPOILER***
Totally bummed that Charlie died. But will definitely read more from Moore!

message 33: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) Okay, maybe I didn't give it enough time (pages), but this is one for the "throw against the wall" category for me ...

Sorreee,
LIZ

message 34: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Liz, what didn't you like about it?

message 35: by Kathy McC (new)

Kathy McC Liz- I can't say I didn't like it, but it is definitely not high on my list. Glad to know that I am not alone. Thought maybe my reading abilities should be in question. For me- just wasn't my type of plot line. The author's creative ideas are what kept me from giving up on it.

message 36: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments Ugghhh...just read your post Sherry. I haven't finished yet but since you didn't write "spoiler" I read it thinking it was safe. Can everyone try to give a spoiler alert? Not to be cranky but I hate having an ending ruined for me. Thanks.

message 37: by Sherry (last edited Jun 27, 2008 11:58AM) (new)

Sherry YIKES!!Joanie,I'm sooo sorry!I went back and ammended it so as not to ruin it for others.I don't read these posts until after I've finished the book and just mistakenly assumed that's how it's done.On another bookclub we have seperate threads to avoid this mishap.

message 38: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments Thanks Sherry. I think everyone does it differently, sometimes I like to come and see what's been posted while I'm reading. A Spoiler vs. Non Spoiler thread is a good idea (I've seen it in a few groups too-maybe the same ones!)

message 39: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) The premise was interesting, but it just didn't hold my attention - maybe I was looking for more entertainment? Since I don't give up easily, I'm apt to try it again at some point - if I remember!!!

message 40: by Kirsty (last edited Jun 28, 2008 03:14AM) (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Sherry/Joanie, I'm with u, I already mentioned 2 threads in the Thirteenth Tale thread.

Lori... whaddya think?

message 41: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Yes, you are right, its a good idea. I rememeber seeing that in the other post, and I think It slipped my mind at the time. I am really sorry. I will start Spoiler vs Nonsp for the two new novels this month, ok?

Sorry about that.

message 42: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Lori, you're the best. But if I had been paying better attention I would have realized that there were spoiler alerts on those posts that contained them.My screw up completely!

message 43: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Lori... as mentioned in another thread... you rock!

message 44: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments Finished Saturday and I'm so happy that I've been introduced to Christopher Moore! I remember seeing Lamb in the bookstore in the airport and thinking it sounded funny but then never picked it up-now I'm going to (as soon as I finish the 5 other books I have from the library) It was really funny to tell my friends what I was reading and watch their expressions change as if to say "yeah, sounds really great." I think the book almost defies explanation. There were so many funny lines in this book-I found myself laughing out loud all the time.

*Spoilers*

Even though I knew that Charlie was going to die it was still a little sad when his named showed up on Minty's datebook.

I absolutely LOL'd at this one.

I know you guys read this eons ago but I just finished it tonight and it was such a joy. I'm so glad this group introduced me to it - definitely will be one of my favorites.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

I absolutely loved this book, it definitely one of the funniest books i've read and definitely the one i LOL to the most.

It was my first (and only so far) Moore book but i have Blood Sucking Fiends waiting for me to start very soon which i know i'm going to enjoy.

I have Lori to thank for turning me onto him, (as i mentioned before) defintely not a let down.

message 50: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 489 comments Who would you guys picture in A Dirty Job movie? (I'm awful at this game, and I don't know if I'm posting in the right spot, but in the Christopher Moore Q&A, he suggested we play...)

Some of my thoughts:
Charlie: James McAvoy or Shia Lebouf
Minty Fresh: I kept picturing a Harlem Globetrotter
Emperor: Steve Buschemi
Lily: Kristen Stewart (although I really don't like her) or Kelly Osbourne (I don't even know if she can act!)
