RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I'm telling you now so you don't have to buy your present Sunday morning at the gas station and confuse your mom with the little tree air fresheners or whatever.

So Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there!

Also, a collection of weird mother/child pictures from the Huffington Post:

3 and 13 disturbed me greatly. 9 is terrifying.

message 5: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Hm. How does that work, Gretchen? Does that steal from your mother's day privileges?

message 6: by smetchie (last edited May 05, 2010 08:09AM) (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Yeah. We pretty much just ignore mother's day when his birthday falls on the same day. It's difficult to get my 5-year-old on board though, because mother's day stuff is EVERYWHERE.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I think Mom's swimsuit in photo #10 must be riding up in a very awkward way in the back...

I got my Mom a card last night at the grocery store, I'm all set! I, uh, just need to sign it and actually mail it...

Félix (habitseven) Janine, here's a sun-resistant plant (agave):

i was actually looking for something a little less cactus-y, but at least this won't turn yellow like most of her other plants.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Happy Mothers Day, Mothers!

This was in today's paper:

Mother's Day is one of the biggest shopping holidays of the year, but not as big here as in the rest of the country.

A survey from the National Retail Federation shows spending is expected to be up a little bit for the holiday, just as it has been for other shopping ocassions this year. The average person expects to spend $127 on moms, up from $124 last year.

In the frugal Midwest, the average is $103 this year, up from $101 last year. We drag down the national average. The biggest spenders are in the West, averaging $139 this year; followed by Southerners, who plan to spend, on average, $137; and people in the Northeast, who expect to shell out $129 this year.

Most popular shopping destinations nationally are specialty stores--florist, jeweler, card shop. In the Midwest, discount stores are the favorite shopping venue for Mom's gift.

I must be the cheapest bastard EVER, because I was like, "100 bucks! That's a lot!"

I spent about forty-five on a juicer for my wife. Sorry, fellow Midwesterners. I think I brought down the average.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i totally killed it for mom's day. kids were all busy early today so i took my wife to lunch and then took a unreal nap with her on the couch (the kind where you wake up with a slobber spot on your shirt and you don't know what day it is) and then cleaned house. kids all came over with husband/wife/GF and we worked in the yard for her. i went to my moms and took her gifts of antiques that i bought for her of stuff that reminded my of my childhood. made her cry. (yes!) and then home for dinner my kids fixed for us and watching home videos from when kids were little. bought my wife some fab be-sparkly sandals that she adores and also a spa package. she just made me snickerdoodles and hinted at additional dessert. ah....

message 15: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments yup. jellypops. totally something she doesn't need but loves. i learned long ago to not buy practical things for her.

glad you learned that

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments and she is totally amped about the spa package because she loves a massage. i told her the only bummer was that it looked like only young college guys were the ones who gave the massages and she and my daughter giggled and she said "i wish"

Mothers day was yesterday. My 11 year old son, for a school project had to prepare a 3 course meal. (he was allowed to organise & supervise assistance)

This was the menu he prepared.

Entre
Garlic Prawns

Main
Roast BeefServed with broccolini, cauliflower & roast potatoes

dessert
Drowned Koalas
(Green jelly with Caramello Koalas swimming in it.)

He also supervised the cleaning up afterwards. What more could a mum ask for.
:)

Félix (habitseven) I'm very impressed.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

I have pictures. :)

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I would have to agree with you Bun, but they never seem to be forthcoming.

I obviously don't drop enough hints. (Must make a note to buy myself a massage for the celebration on the calendar)

message 23: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments my wife opened the gift card and said excitedly "see, whining works!"

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

So that is what I am doing wrong. Not enough whining. Thanks for the tip Kevin. I am sure my family will appreciate it. :)

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)
