Lil' Violet Hello I'm new here

So I love reading but am having trouble finding YA books that are not Romance
I'm trying to find books that have paranormal things (vampires, werewolves, angels, ghosts etc) but little romance

I like harry potter and maximum ride for this they have little bit of romance but a lot of action and likable characters
I should have been a bit more specific so far the suggestions are ok and I thank you for helping.
With harry potter I was thinking more along the lines of books 4, 6, and 7 Dark and edgey and with maximum ride well..just read some of it it'smaximum ride >_> YA preferably anything a 10-college student would read..ish?

So any advice on what books to read that are similar ?

Alan (coachmt) | 12 comments My book is fantasy but not really paranormal. Not a romance, but plenty of action/adventure. A Measure of Disorder

Yes but it is also aimed at age groups 9- 12 grades 5-9
Childens books bore me
Hence why I said Harry poter 4,6 and 7 while yes harry potter is a childrens sieres those ones are aimed at the age range of 14-17, Maximum ride is a YA book young adult NOT a childrens book

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

wow this is kinda a pun but don't judge a book by its cover

lol I'm not I judge a book on the first few pages I can read on amazon

message 20: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) This is just an observation, but it seems that the best paranormal/fantasy books that have little romance are found in the INTERMEDIATE/MG section...

Most YA stories have some element of romance, and usually the story places a heavy emphasis on that, so when I get sick of romantic angles (and love triangles - grrr) I go to the Intermediate section of the bookstore: There's that Nicholas Flamel series (my cousins read that and loved it), and there's the Artemis Fowl series (that may be more "teen fiction") and though there's a little bit of romance, the Looking Glass Wars series is really really good!

PS I'm a college student and I love intermediate/MG level stuff...probably better than YA. It doesn't seem like reading beneath my level at all!

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

the cover is eye catching its a freakin skeleton detective with the power of elements

yes..Omgosh!yes! thank you thats seems to be my problom see I never knew there was something between YA and Adult fiction (which I don't want) I too am a college student so..could I look though your bookshelf for ideas? or do you have it on privet too ?

message 23: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) well technically I guess it would go:
MG-Intermediate
YA
Adult

but I have hardly ever been disappointed by MG/Intermediate fiction. Most of the best are fantasy/paranormal, and IF they have love story elements, they're very secondary and (in my opinion) much more realistic and sweet than a lot of the weirdo/emo stuff in YA.

I'd recommend:
Skulduggery Pleasant (my cousins love that), Nicholas Flamel (I already said that I know), Inheritance Cycle, Percy Jackson series, The Looking Glass Wars series, I've heard good things about Michael Grant's GONE series...

oh and this is just a personal observation, but I've been a lot happier with guy authors lately than girl ones. If it's written by a man, it'll probably be low on romance and high on action, which seems like what you want.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

hmmm this book doesnt have any paranormal in it but i would recomend it to anyone, montmorency by Eleanor updale its really cool, not to much violence but some cool action, very little romance.

message 25: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 505 comments I second the Inheritance Cycle, though it has some romance and it is annoying (to me) they have plenty if action and I think, most of the time at least, the romance is secondary.

message 26: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) There's romance in the Inheritance Cycle? Really?
LOL I never would have guessed - my brothers said that the reason they read the books was because there was "no stupid romance stuff" or so they said

message 27: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments There's a tiny bit between Eragon and Arya, but it's rather one-sided with only Eragon sharing those feelings 'cause Arya shuts him down.

message 28: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 505 comments Exactly. It actually bugs me really bad when I read it. It could be completely left out and would be the better.! ( : They are like 100 years apart in age because she is an elf!

message 29: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) The book I'm reading right nowThe Shadow Hunt, could be considered "paranormal": it has elves, ghosts, goblins/demons, etc. but the main characters are 14ish and any "romance/feelings" are only hinted at :) It goes on sale 6/1.

message 30: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (shyluck13) try any LJ Smith books because they're really a mix of both. And you should seriously consider The Darkest Powers by Kelley Armstrong. And also Vampire Academy! Its the love of my life, VA, and I think you'd really enjoy it if you're looking for crazy paranormal and romance!

message 31: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) ...she said she didn't want romance, and the Vampire Academy series is practically nothing but.

That description reminds me of Fablehaven. It sounds pretty similar.

Everlost. For sure.

Its very fantasy-ish, full of adventure and has a few very nifty action scenes.
THere is also a tiny bit of romance, which fits nicely with the plot, though it takes a back seat.

*Highly* recomended

You know, there is a fourth one coming out?

message 38: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (garrisonkg) | 25 comments I like the young wizards series. It's mostly action with a side of romance kind of teen fiction.-good seris

message 39: by Pandy (new)

Pandy | 185 comments Is that the series by Diane Duane?

message 40: by Arienne (new)

Arienne Souza | 17 comments You should read the Darkest Powers series. It has werewolves, witches, sorcerors(spelled that wrong sorry) and necromancers(they see, talk to, and can raize the dead) It's by Kelley Armstrong. The first book is The Awakining. It has some romance but not too much.

message 41: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (garrisonkg) | 25 comments yes, it is by diane duane. the ninth one just came out in april

message 42: by Pandy (new)

Pandy | 185 comments I've only read the first one and the fifth one. I had no idea there were nine book out. Maybe I'll go back to the series. I don't really remember the ones I read much.

There is, but Christopher Paolini doesn't work with a deadline, so who knows when it's gonna come out.

message 45: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 505 comments I know, I've looked for a realease date a couple of times but I havn't seen one yet ):

message 46: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments He never works to a deadline. The only hope we have of getting info is checking his site.

message 47: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) don't publishers set deadlines though?

message 48: by Lindsey (last edited Jun 11, 2010 05:58PM) (new)

Lindsey | 505 comments IDK, I would guess so. Maybe he just doesn't make it public?

message 49: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (JessfromTex) | 118 comments I would definitely recommend THIRST by Christopher Pike. There's two books in the sereies, but they each have three books in them, so technically I guess the series is 6 books?

Anyway, I'm 18 and I was looking for paranormal with no romance and this satisfied me. It is for an older age group (no younger than 16 or 17 should be reading) and has little romance. It's from the perspective of the oldest, and last, vampire in the world. Another reason I enjoyed it was because it was about a totally kick-ass FEMALE vampire who was not dependant on any male, which is a nice change. It is HIGHLY recommended, and one of my favorite sereis, which I have read MANY.Thirst No. 1: The Last Vampire, Black Blood, Red Dice <<
