I like the way the big SciFi and Fantasy Book Club works overall ... that alternating book selection/top selection thing for fantasy and Science Fiction, but I'm not set on it. I'm a member there (along with 3000 of my closest friends and relations)

I don't want to just duplicate them necessarily, but it's a way to do things - a possible way ....

I picked a couple books I'd been meaning to read anyways as starters ...

I had a thought though, instead of starting two books at the beginning of the month, what if one ran from 1 to 30 and another from 15 to 14 ... we can alternate SF and Fantasy in each place and maybe do a theme for one and a book selection for the other ....

Donna (donnahr) When you say theme, do you mean that there isn't a specific book assigned for the month, just a general theme and everyone reads different books of their own choosing within it?

I like the 1st to 30th and 15th to 14th idea a lot. However, I am pretty good at staying on top of things and I read fast. I could see someone getting confused or feeling behind things if they haven't finished the first book and there's a second one starting up. Just a thought.

What about this ... so it doesn't get too confusing or demanding.

1. For the first of the month, we'll alternate Fantasy and Science Fiction each month and select a book from the list of previously nominated books in that genre. We'll have a poll every month with books randomly selected from that list and we read the winner.

2. Then, for the 15th, from the other genre we'll select a theme from a list of themes (still do the poll) and then we'll make a list of x books in that theme (from the list of already nominated books and/or our own ideas), do a poll to select one and read the winner.

3. Then the nominations and selections can happen about a week before that particular reading cycle starts ....

I'm not big on rules, but a little organization would be nice. :)

Donna (donnahr) Sounds good to me.

Tracey Alley (traceya) Sounds like a great way to organize things to me.

OK, so around the 8th I'll sent out a poll for a fantasy theme (I started a list of possibilities, but feel free to suggest new ones) and then we can nominate books like on Monday, and see how it works. Since we're still a relatively small group, it should be fairly easy ... 3 or themes to vote from and 3 or 4 books from that theme ...

Lyndl | 27 comments Sounds good so far, I look forward to the poll :)

A couple questions:

When nominating books for the mid-month theme, do we want to do a nomination/seconded thing? I was thinking that while we're small, that might be overkill, but as we grow it would be useful ... Thoughts?

Also, should discussions be free form without a leader? I thought if a separate folder was created for each book, then anyone could start a conversation on whatever interested them. Or, do we need a little structure with leaders and all that? Or, are leaders something for when we're larger?

Donna (donnahr) My first thought is that those are things for when the group is larger. However, I can see how a book leader could be useful, to pose questions to stimulate discussion. And at this point, nomination/seconded does sound like overkill. If too many books are nominated, maybe there could be a first poll and then a second runoff poll with the top three picks. Although that would take more time...As you can see, I haven't been in enough book groups to have very good suggestions! ;) I do promise to be amenable to whatever you decide!

hmmmmm ... there's an idea. Maybe we can try that for this upcoming fantasy theme round. How about this:
* I'll put up a poll with maybe 4 randomly picked themes from the theme thread on the 7th or 8th.
* A couple days later, we can then nominate books based on that theme.
* After there are X nominations, we can do a poll followed by a poll based on the top 3.

And if that doesn't work we can try it a different way ....

Lyndl | 27 comments My thoughts on the book discussion...

Someone needs to be responsible, if only to start off a couple of threads, pose some questions etc. Volunteer basis?

Although we don't really need "rules" there should be some agreement or guidelines around the discussions. e.g. spoilers or reading ahead should be in separate posts or at least clearly marked so others can skip over them.
