Rachel (rachel652) | 8 comments I read A Test of Wills, and am now reading Legacy of the Dead. I liked the first, and am enjoying the second. My question is whether or not it is worth it to search out all of the books in the series. Are all of them worth reading?

Bluedaizy | 97 comments I've never heard of these books, but am intrigued. What are they about?

Rachel (rachel652) | 8 comments Ian Rutledge is a shell-shocked survivor of World War I. His traumatic experiences of the war, including the need to execute one of the men under his command, has caused him to have a constant mental companion named Hamish, the Scotsman he had killed by firing squad. Rutledge goes back to work as a detective, and solves mysteries while fighting his demons.

It sounds implausable, but it works. The books are very atmospheric, and although the unusual problem that the main character has may seem "gimmicky" - it doesn't come off that way.

The first of the series is A Test of Wills, and the fourth is Legacy of the Dead, which I have just finished. I found the intervening two books in the used book store near me on Friday, and can't wait to read them. So I guess I have answered my own question!

Pamela These sound fascinating. I really like historical mysteries. I'm rather burned out on the 19th century detectives (excluding Mary Russell!) at this point in time, so I'd like to move forward in time. I'll definitely check these books out. Thanks for the tip!
