Book Huntress (bookhuntress) | 30 comments So I just got a nook!!!!!! I am very excited, my husband surprised me with it last night and I have to say really liking it so far, but being able to order books and get them is going to be dangerous!!!

message 2: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley (trillianne) | 373 comments I have a Sony and yes, it is very dangerous to my purse but I try and set myself a limit and stick to it, have a look at who has sales on books too.

Oh no! I'm about to get a Sony reader. Sounds like I might be in trouble!!

message 4: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley (trillianne) | 373 comments The list I sent you should keep yopu busy for a while Jen, lol.

Like I said, set yourself a limit and you'll be fine.

message 5: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) It is dangerous. When I first got my Kindle I was about 15-20 books a month. That lasted for about 6 months. Yikes! Then I started balancing getting books from the library and reading classics -- which if they are pre-1923 are free. :) I also found a friend to associate my Kindle account and now we can share all our books -- so that is saving money too. :)

So I agree with Kimberly, set yourself a monthly limit. Balance it with classics that are free and library books (which I know in your case is limited).

The thing about ereaders is that I read soooooo much faster on them. So I go through books faster.

message 6: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley (trillianne) | 373 comments Oh and there are quite a few sites (including goodreads) that have free books too.

message 7: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I love love love loooking for promotional books and new books.

Cameron (camishel) | 7 comments I have a Sony E-Reader and it is awesome for trips and on the airplane...fits in my purse and can go anywhere with me, but I totally love being about to pick up a book also. I am having to send in my reader to get an update..so I will be without it for a couple of weeks now.

like in the airplane do they not let u bring anything on there anymore, i want to knoe how that's changed?

message 11: by Regina (last edited Jun 23, 2010 08:15AM) (new)

Regina (reginar) There really isn't a limit of what you can bring on airplanes -- except for liquid brought in outside of the security gate, large large suitcases, large liquids in your suitcases and weapons. The only downside to an ereader (and mp3 player, etc.) is that during take off and landing you can't have electronic products on. But once the plane has taken off you can turn it on. My Kindle has been a lifesaver for me when traveling -- right now I have 60 books on it but over a hundred archived on amazon. So it is nice to go back and forth.

How painful Cameron!!! I wouldn't be able to be without my Kindle! I have a Kindle app on my iPhone where I can access all my books and on my computer too -- can you do something similar?

Mariya, reading on an ereader with e-ink technology is just like reading a print book. It looks like a print book, the pages turn like a print book, on the Kindle (can't speak for other ereaders since I haven't tried them) the pages turn faster than I can turn them in real life. It is easier to hold than a book. And is nothing like reading on a computer. I know it isn't for everyone. But I just love it so much. Also, I read faster. The Nook and the Kindle just dropped their prices to under $200. The Kindle you can order and try out for 30 days and then return for a full refund. The Nook I believe you have a set period of time and you can return for a restocking fee. And now there is also the Kobo from Borders. If you are a big reader, I recommend it. :)

message 12: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) so u can bring mp3 players/ipods? i didnt knoe. i heard that u can only bring like small luggage like a purse.

Yes of course! Otherwise passangers would be going crazy. LOL. I think it is to keep us focused on other things than delay, turbulenece and the small snacks. There is no limit on electronic devices. People have DVD players, laptops, iPads, etc., etc., etc.

message 15: by Cameron (new)

Cameron (camishel) | 7 comments Yeah as long as you turn it off before takoff and during landing you can take it...and when you think about it (I am a fast reader too) you can have 1000's of books on it and mine and I am sure the Kindle let's you put music on it too. So I can read or listen to music on it.

Regina - I wish there was I have the e-reader 500 which is one of the first one's that Sony made so it's not compatable with lots of other sites, but when Sony upgraded there site unless you send it in to get the update you cant get download any books to it. UGH!!! Horrible I know but I will survive somehow.

There are so many websites for free books. I know the ones for Kindle, but I am not sure what kind of reader you have.

Here are some:

http://www.smashwords.com/
http://www.fictionwise.com/

If you have a Kindle I could post lots more, let me know.

I've been looking at the Kobo and wondering what it's like to use. I was thinking of getting my aunt to ship one to me in the UK.

message 29: by Shelleyrae (new)

Shelleyrae at Book'd Out I got an ipod touch recently as an ereader because being in Australia means access to books can be limited. I mainly use calibre and stanza but i also have the kindle app, borders app, kobo app and B+N app installed so I have less restrictions imposed on me.
I find the touch easy to read on - you can adjust the page background, font size, font colour and brightness easily to your comfort or conditions.
I'm really glad I went with the ipod though wish I could have afforded an ipad :)

message 30: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. I have an iTouch now and I loved reading on it at first, but now it just hurts my eyes. I do love stanza and calibre though and how easy it was to upload the books wirelessly from my laptop to stanza.

I have had the Kobo for a month now. I am really enjoying it. I haven't bought any books yet because I had a lot of freebies on it and I got a lot of freebies online to read. I use Calibre(software) to convert PDF files to epub. I am not using the Kobo software to manage my files because I had Adobe digital editions loaded on my laptop and there was a conflict, so I manage my books through Adobe digital editions. There was an issue regarding changing font size from really small to larger. There is a fix for that on one of the review sites. The advertised 8000 pages before a charge is needed can't possibly be right, more like 800 pages. It does take about a minute to open and then about 30 seconds to get to your book. I like that I can order books from anywhere. And for those of you that like Poker, there is an "easter egg" on the reader. I do like the e-ink technology. I can read in the sun and shade.

One other thing - they are advertising the case for the Kobo by Roots for about $30-40CAD. The people at my local Chapters store noticed that they had a leather book cover that fits the Kobo and it sells for $12.99. They ordered tons of them.

Bianca | 117 comments Ive been looking at ereaders for awhile now as well, atm Im thinking I'd like to get a Pocketbook 302, but Ill have to wait till my bday which is in september. Ah well in the meantime I read ebooks on my phone hihi

Thanks for that, AH.

message 34: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. I got my Kobo on Saturday. Once I figured out how to put the ebooks I already owned on there, I haven't had problems since. Reading on it is nice, except you can't always change the font.

I use Calibre to keep track of my books, and then move them to adobe digital to upload them. It was a little time consuming at first, but now I don't mind.

message 35: by Bookworms (new)

Bookworms | 43 comments Well I was thinking about an eReader. So what type of eReader you have and could you recommend some model? Because I don't know which one is good or not good. Should be not so expensive.

message 36: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Bookworms -- where do you buy most of your books right now? That is an important factor.

I buy all my books from Amazon or check out from the library, so I choose the Kindle.

Another thing that I did before buying, was I made a list of books I just bought and books I expected to read over the next few months -- then I checked the availablity and price of the ebooks from all the vendors -- for me and what I was reading Amazon had the greatest availability and the lowest price. But I would do some shopping around.

Also, I read forums of people who have the various devices, here are the kindle forums:

http://www.kindleboards.com/index.php
http://www.amazon.com/tag/kindle/forum

Reading the forums of people who have the devices, the problems, their complaints, their experience with customer service -- I found that very informative. For me I saw hands down that Kindles had less bugs/problems and really good customer service -- but this of course is just my opinion. I am sure everyone has different opinions on this.

Here are some nook forums:

http://www.nookboards.com/forum/index...

I am not sure where the Kobo or Sony forums are.

The pricing I think right now is
Nook with wireless 3G $199
Kindle with wireless 3G $189
Nook with wifi only $149
Kobo (no wifi and no wireless) $149
Sony Pocket (no wifi and no wireless) $149

There is also a Sony Touch and a Sony Daily Edition (or are these the same?) but they are pricier.

message 37: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Also, here is a website to help find free ebooks and shop around for prices adn availability: www.inkmesh.com

message 39: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley (trillianne) | 373 comments Hey Regina. You say that amazon do eBooks, when I look they aren't doing there are non at all, are you in the UK or the US? I'm in the UK and don't think they are selling them here.

message 40: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I know they are doing them oversees. I am sorry. I don't know spefificaly about the UK. I know people in Australia and Japan have the Kindle and are very happy. I am not sure if there are different issues with UK. If you are intereted I would post that qestion on the Kindle forums I posted above ....

They are selling them to us, Kimberley but you have to buy them from the .com website. However, whenever you hear about "free" ebooks they're only free to US customers we apparently have to pay VAT even though 17.5% of free is free. They should make ebooks free of tax just like their dead tree counterparts. I'll stop now before I bore you all with my ranting. :)

message 42: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) The separate taxing requirements, licensing issues and laws of different countries seem so slow to catch up with the global nature of our economy!

Bookworms | 43 comments Bookworms wrote: "Well I was thinking about an eReader. So what type of eReader you have and could you recommend some model? Because I don't know which one is good or not good. Should be not so expensive."

Oh wow, thank you very much for this many information Regina. I order the most books via amazon, so I think the kindle could be a good choice. I will read the reports in the forum, thank you very much.

message 44: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley (trillianne) | 373 comments Thanks Amy, I'll have a look.

message 45: by Angela (new)

Angela i've started thinking that I would really like an e-reader but still can't decide whether to go with kindle or nook ... however the thing is I stopped buying from amazon and/or B&N b/c my reading habit was getting spendy so I went and got a library card

most of my looking shows that the e-version of a book is often as expensive if not more expensive than the mass market paperback edition which is beyond ridiculous, the whole point of everything going "e" is that it's cheaper

so i'm stuck on the ereader fence, if I could borrow books from an ereader library (for free of course just like the local library) I would totally do it and only buy those I just HAVE to own

message 46: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) See if your local library has ebooks. Overdrive.com

yeah the publishers are being ridiculous about the pricing. But I prefer to read on my kindle over a real book.

message 47: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bexsi) I have been given a bebook neo as a gift as my sister saw how much I love reading. I am a little unsure of it but want to give it a try. Thanks for the links as I didnt no the best place to buy ebooks i will have a look now.

message 48: by Sally (new)

Sally (sjanec) | 22 comments I love my Kindle and recommend it. Amazon does offer a lot of free books, some fairly good ones. My daughter and I share an account so we can both use it, since we like many of the same books, so that cuts our cost to 50%. We both put in $20 a month and pick 4-5 books each month so it works well. I believe that up to 5 kindles or kindle on pc can share an account.

message 49: by Regina (last edited Jul 06, 2010 06:12PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) There is actually no limit to how many kindles or kindle apps can share an account. But many books are limited to being read by on *only* 6 kindle/apps at a time. Some books have no limitation. Some are limited to 4. But when a book a is removed from a kindle/app then the availability goes back up.

message 50: by Angela (new)

Angela well i was leaning slightly toward the Nook b/c it supports ePUB and kindle doesn't but have just some news articles that Nook may be in trouble with Kindle and another company due to some patent issues, meaning buh-bye possibly, fun
so now I'm leaning slightly toward the Kindle, gah! I can't decide, teeter .... totter .... teeter ....
