BEST read? I'm still going between the Jim Butcher books and the Joss Ware book. Both are awesome series.
BEST first in series? Only one was a first-in-series book, and while it was fun, Steamed wasn't the 'best' of anything.

I haven't finished Linger yet, but so far my favorite is Branded by Fire. Full Moon Rising is the best first in the series. Although, Desert Spear was a great book if you're looking for a fantasy that isn't UF.
