What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

My dad got this book from the library in the early 2000s, I believe. In it these elderly women (one may have had alzheimer's) were remembering their past (pre WW1 or 2) and their family secrets. One of which was that the other protagonist (who I remember was a writer, with a dog) was adopted by her aunt; her mother was the youngest sister.

I think the title was a nursery rhyme, but that could be wrong.
