Here you can nominate any word that is proudly South African for us to read in August.

Then we take the word we voted on and read a book starting with a letter in the word, or a author's name/surname that starts with the letter.

For example:

Z -
U - Uglies
L - Lover Eternal
U -

Nominations will be open until 10th of July.

SOUTIE - "Another Afrikaner name for an english speaking South African - comes from the image of the "English" having one foot in South Africa, the other in England, with something hanging in the middle (in the water)!"

Hahaha

Lauren Smith Haha, that's the first time I hear the 'polite' version of that term. The one I heard before was 'soutpiel'.

Do any Afrikaaners still use either of those terms? Seeing as most english-speakers are now born here...

I had a friend who was English and born here but his nickname was Soutie...
I think we still use it a lot, especially when you come accross an english speaking person who tries to speak afrikaans but doesnt accomplish it so wel lol :)

message 7: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Haha, I've probably been called soutie a couple of times then, especially here in Pretoria.

Yes I know that it is still used a lot.

Just as there are some horrid words for Afrikaans people to

message 10: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Weird, I've never heard anyone use it before. Does it apply to all english-speaking South Africans or just white ones?

Lauren Smith Oh, I forgot, the other day I thought of nominating ROBOT - the South African word for what the rest of the English-speaking world calls a "traffic-light".

hehe good one!

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Oooh yeah thats a good one... when you talk to people from other countries about a robot they think your talking about an iron man with gadgets haha, they think your crazy when they hear what your really referring to :)

Ok so I'll nominate another word if you dont mind.
Braai
