Here you can nominate any word that is proudly South African for us to read in August.

Then we take the word we voted on and read a book starting with a letter in the word, or a author's name/surname that starts with the letter.

For example:

Haha, that's the first time I hear the 'polite' version of that term. The one I heard before was 'soutpiel'.

Do any Afrikaaners still use either of those terms? Seeing as most english-speakers are now born here...

I had a friend who was English and born here but his nickname was Soutie...
I think we still use it a lot, especially when you come accross an english speaking person who tries to speak afrikaans but doesnt accomplish it so wel lol :)

Haha, I've probably been called soutie a couple of times then, especially here in Pretoria.

Soutie is still used, my boyfriend calls himself a soutie :P

Weird, I've never heard anyone use it before. Does it apply to all english-speaking South Africans or just white ones?

Oh, I forgot, the other day I thought of nominating ROBOT - the South African word for what the rest of the English-speaking world calls a "traffic-light".

Oooh yeah thats a good one... when you talk to people from other countries about a robot they think your talking about an iron man with gadgets haha, they think your crazy when they hear what your really referring to :)
