Slayermel | 664 comments As long as you haven't finished them, I don't see a problem with it. I think half way is being very reasonable :0)

Congrats Natasha.

I know you are looking forward to your trip, Tina! Hope it goes great. Where in the States will you be?

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 234 comments Question about recommended books - can that include books that are chosen/recommended as Group Reads?

message 54: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1020 comments Definitely, BJ. It's like those titles are being "recommended" to you by an entire group!

Thanks, Luann!! Off to make the lists!

That's awesome! What do you want to do with your degree? I've got two s-i-l's that are school librarians (one elementary and one high) and my sister's roommate is a public city librarian. My sister once worked for a corporate library. There's a lot more to LIS than appears!

Would I do that to you?? Just don't ever name your dog Toto! (couldn't resist). My husband has family in Western Kansas, outside of Hayes, if you know where that is.

Luann (azbookgal) | 1020 comments Yes, lots of versatility, but not always a lot of pay or job security. When I was going to library school, I planned to be a children's librarian in a public library. After graduating, I worked part-time in a public library, but then ended up with a full-time job as a school librarian. I'm really loving it, but still volunteer at my public library once in a while to keep my foot in the door. With school budgets being what they are, many, many schools are getting rid of more expensive yet also more qualified certified librarians and putting aides in their libraries. Of course public libraries are having a hard time of it budget-wise, too. I imagine it's the same in academic libraries as well.

That's where my husband is from! Hoxie KS (West of Hayes about 1 hour). Where does your husband have family? Bet my husband knows it! I'm more from south central KS myself. But almost all of both of our immediate families have relocated to Eastern KS--not by tornado, by normal means ;)

I know what you mean--one of my sil has to teach part time and be a librarian part time due to budget cuts. My other sil has to travel between several schools, but so far she's maintained a full time position (every year they threaten to cut her position). My sister's roommate, thankfully, is caught in a freeze, so his position is secure for the time being. It's daunting!

I'm glad you have noticed too much decline in jobs you'd like to go into, Natasha--I have no doubt you'll be up for the competition ;)

They live in Quinter, which is on I-70 about 30 - 45 minutes west of Hayes. They used to own a big cattle ranch there, but they are older now. Actually, his aunt, who was 91, just passed away a week ago. Anyway - we have been to that part of Kansas many times!

message 65: by Tina (new)

Tina I'm sorry about his aunt. I do know Quinter. We go through that on our way to Hoxie. It's about half way from Hays to Hoxie. Small world :)

The Rainbow by DH Lawrence
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
The Last Witchfinder

Catch 22
The Passage by Justing Cronin

message 70: by Sunflower (new)

Sunflower | 174 comments I so resonate with "started but not finished" and Wolf Hall. It has such great reviews; everyone seems to love it, but I just can't get into it. Only another 420 pages to go!

Bri (l3ri) I have 2 questions. On the one about the series, does that mean finish the series? or just one more book to help finish the series? Kind of confusing.
Also, since I am just now joining in but this challenge started on the 10th, can I use the books I've read since then book to complete the challenge?

message 72: by Bri (new)

Bri (l3ri) Oh, Also could anyone recommend some good books? I don't know anyone else who reads!! lol

We have a recommendation thread somewhere here for that very purpose. What type of books do you like?

Luann (azbookgal) | 1020 comments Bri wrote: "I have 2 questions. On the one about the series, does that mean finish the series? or just one more book to help finish the series? Kind of confusing."

Either way, Bri. That's great if the books you read will finish the series, but they don't have to. They can just be books in a series that will help you to finish it eventually. You might even be reading books in a series that aren't all out yet.

Bri wrote: "Also, since I am just now joining in but this challenge started on the 10th, can I use the books I've read since then book to complete the challenge? "

Sure, feel free to use any books you've finished since the 10th.

I was going to give you a link to the Recommendation thread, but I see you've already found it. :)

message 76: by Bri (new)

Bri (l3ri) Yes, thanks so much! You guys are so sweet! I've got lots of rec. now. Maybe enough for even after the challenge! lol :)

Oh, and I CANNOT WAIT for Mockingjay to come out!

message 77: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenofthebookworm) I have a question. I got a book from the library for the graphic novel part, I needed one starting with the letter c.
The book that I have sitting beside the computer is called CSI:Miami, with no subtitle but I couldn't find it on Goodreads using the title so I tried using the ISBN but it comes up saying that the title is Thou Shalt Not.
My question is this as the actual book says it is called CSI:MIami can I use it as my letter C or will I have to find one that is actually on the Goodreads site listed as beginning with C?

message 78: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments I would except it Karen as it's part of the CSI:Miami series.
It's odd though because they would usually say CSI: Miami and then the subtitle.

To be honest with you at this point I would accept either the main series name or the subtitle, which ever one you want to use.

message 79: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenofthebookworm) Thank you.

message 80: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1020 comments Good answer, Mel! Especially with that book, looks like either the series title or the subtitle could be used.

I had this with my spell challenge and ending up reading a CSI:Vegas book that came up with the subtitle on GR (think it was Serial or some such thing). I just took the C from the CSI as my letter as that was what was shown on the book. I was standing in the library uhming and ahing a lot first though.
