The Search by Nora Roberts

To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life-a quaint house on an island off Seattle's coast, a thriving dog-training school, and a challenging volunteer job performing canine search and rescues. Not to mention her three intensely loyal Labs. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare...

Several years ago, Fiona was the only survivor of the Red Scarf serial killer, who shot and killed Fiona's cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.

On Orcas Island, Fiona found the peace and solitude she needed to rebuild her life. But all that changes on the day Simon Doyle barrels up her drive, desperate for her help. He's the reluctant owner of an out-of-control puppy, foisted upon him by his mother. Jaws has eaten through Simon's house, and he's at his wit's end.

To Fiona, Jaws is nothing she can't handle. Simon, however, is another matter. A newcomer to Orcas, he's a rugged and in-tensely private artist, known for the exquisite furniture he creates from wood. Simon never wanted a puppy-and he most definitely doesn't want a woman. Besides, the lanky redhead is not his type. But tell that to his hormones.

As Fiona embarks on training Jaws, and Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona's life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one motive: to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands...

I finished "The Search" last night. Haven't gotten a chance to write my review yet, but should get to it tomorrow.

I enjoyed the book, more than some of her other recent ones (like High Noon). I loved the dog S&R aspect of the story. Probably because I'm a dog person ;)

But I also thought the book could have been better. It was lacking in intensity for me. And the romance was too smooth...I wanted a little more, I don't know...battle? antagonism? ???...between the H/H rather than the simple falling in love that it was.

Good book. Anyone else finished it?

Kerri Levine | 96 comments Isis, I had a similiar response to "The Search." It was good, but not Nora's best. I loved, the S&R aspect, and the basic trainings, too. (Maybe because I trained a puppy two years ago, and yet it seems never ending?!) I just think the end was a little anti-climatic. Too quick and tidy. The romance worked for me, though. No complaints there.

I totally agree with the ending feeling anti-climatic. I was expecting something very tense with a very life&death feel, but instead it came off very blase. There was no intensity to it. Which bugged me.

I was also just a smidge annoyed to be left wondering what happened with the reporter chick. Wonder if she lived...

Kerri Levine | 96 comments Gee, I'd forgotten about the reporter! She was a B, but didn't deserve what she got. Guess we're left to use our own imaginations there.

Amar | 134 comments Oh ladies, I was so sad after I read The Search because it disappointed me (been waiting all year for NR's single title release)...I like the h/h but just didn't get a lot of sizzle from their relationship...and even worse, I'm not a pet owner (do like dogs though) so couldn't really dig into the dog training angle too much...liked it at first but then got to be too much for me...this disappointment on top of a lackluster 3rd installment in the Vows series is weighing heavy on my NR loving heart...sigh!

Time to do some rereads on her oldies but goodies :-)

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) I had not heard too much about this book in the threads on GR but I have been an absolute fan of NR since her days at Silhouette...anyways, I finished this book this morning & I have to say I am very disappointed. This was not one of NR's better books. I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong but it seemed that the "red scarf killer" should have had more play. The parts about the dogs along with the search & rescue were very good-of course I am a dog person. However, that being said, this book did not do it for me - I got bored with it & like others have said the romance was just too quick - needed more there definitely. OK, although I have had a couple of disappointments with NR she will always remain a favorite of mine & I will continue to read her books. Just not right a way. :(

Jennifer C I really liked this book, although the ending seemed a bit rushed. I really enjoyed all the training information with the dogs. I am a HUGE dog person and I have even used some of the training techniques she mentioned in this book on my dog. I loved knowing who the killer was from the beginning, although the fact the Fiona and Simon seemed to pick up right away on the killers motives/thought processes, etc was not developed enough to be plausible (in my opinion). They are after all civilians. But the love story between them was great and I had a hard time putting this down, it was another great book for me by Nora Roberts.

I bought and read the hardcover last year when it came out. Then I saw the new release paperback on the shelf last week and picked it up. I re read it between my current reading of the Circle trilogy.

Frst off, that's saying something right there, that I liked it enough that I jumped in and re read it despite that it's a lengthier book. I thought this was classic Nora, spine tingly creepy scary yet with moments of feel goodness, snappy dialog, steamy romance, all while getting absorbed into a career/trade that you normally wouldn't know much about.

I thought Simon was a bit harsh and brusque with words, but he and Fiona worked for me as a romantic duo. I also thought the dogs were adorable, especially Jaws. The ending rapped up a little too quick and neat but I was still very satisfied.

My reaction to the book is almost word for word the same as yours! While I loved the book, the ending wrapped anti-climatically.

Season Gonzales (lilmami) | 27 comments i really loved this book its one of my favorites i loved everything about it how crazy it was and how reallistic it was too just a great book

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 86 comments I enjoyed the book but agree with most everyone here that the ending was anti-climactic. I also would have preferred trying to figure out the identity of the killer from clues rather than being told up front and finally, I did not like the way that Simon spoke to and for Fiona. No one likes to be told to shut up.
