luna is one of my all-time favorite character :p

message 10: by Kyra (new)

Kyra (kyraconteur) Yes, Luna rocks. <3 But I always wondered why we JUST meet the thestrals in their fifth year. I mean, wouldn't you think that they would have met them before that? They DID use the carriages before... =/

that's what makes it so interesting- you never knew how they were pulled before

message 12: by Kyra (new)

Kyra (kyraconteur) Yeah...they never really told you. I always wondered about that too... D:

message 13: by Pandy (new)

Pandy The thestrals were intersting to learn about. I guess they were just introduced then becuase Harry and his friends needed them later in the book to get to the ministry. And Harry could only see them after seeing Cedric killed. I always thought they just moved because they were enchanted. I never really wondered about it.

message 14: by Kyra (new)

Kyra (kyraconteur) Well, no, Harry could have seen them before...he'd seen his parents killed as well.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

actually, harry didn't exactly see his parents die, he just saw the flash of light.
wouldn't he see the thestrals @ the end of the 4th book??

message 16: by Pandy (new)

Pandy I think you're right Zanzibar. Harry should have seen them at the end of the fourth book. I think Ron even made him look out for the carriages. J.K. probably didn't want to introduce something new at the end of Goblet of Fire because it never mentions him seeing anything. I guess it is just an inconsistency in the books.

yeah, harry didn't see his parents die and maybe harry just didn't see the thestrals because he was really sad and distressed at the end of goblet of fire, he was too distracted to notice. characters tend to do that kind of stuff a lot.

message 18: by Kyra (new)

Kyra (kyraconteur) Ah, yes, the end of the fourth book as well...the story's (obviously) still great, though, even with a few confusing things. Yeah, that may have been the reason, Kate. Most of these things we just will never know the answers to, but it's fun to wonder. ;)

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

does he see thestrals in the 5th movie?

message 20: by Pandy (new)

Pandy Yeah, he does. I havn't seen it in a while, but I remember there is a scene that's not in the book where he finds Luna in the forset and he sees her feeding the thestrals. She explains about them to him I think.

yeah, it's fun to try and figure out these things! harry sees the thestrels at the beginning at the carriages, and later with luna, and when they ride them to the ministry, i think maybe other times too...

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

do they look creepy?

message 23: by Kate, awesome ballerina moderator (new)

Kate | 120 comments Mod

message 27: by Renae (new)

Renae | 11 comments umbridge was horrible although she did make a really good character

yeah

message 29: by Kyra (last edited Feb 24, 2009 06:04PM) (new)

Kyra (kyraconteur) Umbridge is one of those fakely sweet preppy ladies who pretend to be all charming and lovely, when their insides are really evil mush. If you can find one of the few of her fans, they should be burned and cremated immediately...

message 30: by Renae (new)

Renae | 11 comments yeah that was terrible

J.K. Rowling might not have mentioned the thestrals because the characters don't take the carriages back to the train.
