I'm looking forward to this one (even though it wasn't my top choice... that is the power of democracy, folks)!

Unfortunately, it's not available on Kindle, but you can pick it up from Amazon here, or get it at your local bookstore or library!

Start reading soon, we'll make the official announcement on the show next week!

terpkristin | 4407 comments I thought the results of the poll wouldn't be announced until tomorrow....

Not being on Kindle may make me out. I haven't been home or in a position to do any real reading, other than a page here, a page there. It is available on Audible, but I've got my Audible credits (and interest in reading) elsewhere.

Oh, is it still open? Wow, I'm a freaking idiot. Well, it's probably going to win!

I'm a bad leader.

terpkristin | 4407 comments It says results will be shown on July 9th. ;)

Damn! I'm changing the ending date....

terpkristin | 4407 comments It's OK, I ended up buying the dead tree version from Amazon. I may not get a chance to read it in a timely fashion, but I'll try. Work is kicking my butt lately.

message 7: by Tom (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tom Hansen (scarhoof) Found it at Bookmans in Mesa, AZ in trade paperback. Too bad it's not on Kindle, I would have rather bought it there, but at least I can support a quality used/trade-bookstore in my area.

Joyce (eternity21) | 198 comments This has been on my to read list for a long time. YEah!

message 9: by Cameron (last edited Jul 08, 2010 03:34PM) (new)

Cameron (cm_cameron) | 50 comments Wow! Quite the landslide victory for this one. Only a dozen votes away from double what second place got. Hopefully the votes reflect the quality.

I've got Starship Troopers on my Overdrive app at the moment so it looks like I'll be reading and listening to Heinlein's work.

Tamahome | 7225 comments The Moon is a hard mistress audiobook is on http://overdrive.com too, if your library supports it.
It's read with a kind of russian accent. Like I said I didn't finish it, partly because my iphone used to keep losing its place, and Overdrive divides the book into hour long pieces.

Mike Davis (chilimac) | 28 comments Dang it, this screws up my plans! I was gonna buy the Nook this weekend and have this be my first book. Turns on this is the 1 book out of the 4 that isn't available as an e-book. Darn democracy screwing me up again!!!!

I think it's the same narrarator on Audible. I listened to the sample and realized that there was no way I could listen to it with that narrarator. C'est la vie, I suppose. My copy should come from Amazon probably early next week, and if I have time, I'll read along. If I don't have time, well, it'll eventually get read.

Reading it with a Russian accent in your mind makes the broken English of the text easier to understand IMO.

Skip | 517 comments I just moved, so the issue for me is: do I look for the box with my copy of this book, or do I just break down and buy another copy?

I loved this book when I first read it, though I wonder how much of the shine has worn off now that I'm more than twice as old. If nothing else I expect good discussions on politics, golden age sciencce fiction, and line families.

David Murphy | 5 comments This is one of my "go to" books, when I want to read something but not something new. I also have the unabridged version on my iPod to listen to while I work.

Wow I almost put a spoiler in there, wups!

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Perfect timing for a new pick, looks like something short I can get through while I'm away for the weekend. Plus I've never read a Heinlein book.

message 17: by Steve (new)

Steve | 34 comments I managed to pick up the last copy at any Chapters in the Vancouver area. Looking at the back cover I don't think I've ever read it before and the back cover says "one of the high points of modern science fiction". Apparently I've been neglecting a classic.

terpkristin | 4407 comments Steve wrote: "Apparently I've been neglecting a classic."

I dunno. At one point, I came across a list of "sci-fi everybody must read" which included Stranger in a Strange Land, so I read it. The book was decent enough (and has so many cultural references made to it I guess that alone was reason to read it) but man did I dislike Heinlein's writing style. In short, don't judge a book by it's cover [blurb:] (or by people calling it "must read" or "classic"). ;)

Matty Van (mattyvan) | 55 comments this was my pick and my library has it in stock, I look forward to diving in as soon as I finish The Girl Who Played with Fire

Taueret | 58 comments Historically I hate Heinlein, but I'll give it a go!

Alex Covic (buckybit) | 25 comments Finally! A book that I have read! Even more than once! But it was so long ago, that I don't remember almost anything about it! Need to re-read it ... again :(

I cannot keep up with you people.

'Classic' Heinlein - best Heinlein?

I do like his early stuff much more, than, let's say Friday (highest advance pay from a publisher for a sci-fi novel - was it 1 Million $ back in the days?) - but I do like Lazarus (The Notebooks of Lazarus Long) though. Almost a hippie novel for his standards.

Do you read The Moon ... and think of Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy too?

Philip (heard03) | 383 comments If this is your introduction to Heinlein and you enjoy it, check out his Future History Series. There's some great stories in it.

Don't judge Heinlein by Stranger in a Strange Land. Every great writer is entitled to write one work of wordy pretentious bollocks.

Nate Frary | 19 comments I listened to the audiobook version a few months ago and loved it.

Noel Baker | 366 comments Nate wrote: "I listened to the audiobook version a few months ago and loved it."

Nah, it really is wordy, pretentious bollocks, and I'm a life long Heinlein fan.

Stan Slaughter | 359 comments No ebook version, but you can find the first chapter online at KoboBooks:

Micah (onemorebaker) | 1071 comments Finally got down to the library today and grabbed it. Hope to start on it this weekend. But with 2 toddlers in the house who knows?

That still doesn't change the fact that I loved the book.

Noel Baker | 366 comments I'm very happy for you.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments I went to the library but their copy was an old Tor paperback with yellowing paper and fading print, I just won't read something like that, so I requested a different copy from another university library in the state, and it should be here in a few days.

Nate Frary | 19 comments Noel wrote: "I'm very happy for you."

As well you should be.

terpkristin | 4407 comments I'm almost halfway through at this point, I've been able to read during some down time at work. Despite my initial hesitation, I've actually been enjoying it. I have a feeling that this will be a book enjoyed more by the younger ones here than the older ones.
