Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) While talking about what books would be good for a Buddy Read, our fellow member Sherri said: "How about the middle of each month we pick a book to start the 1st of the next month and you can participate or not...then discuss?!?!"

Automatically, the discussion heated up a little. We know that not everyone is into books that other people are into. In the middle of every month, we can get together some books that we have been eager to read, and vote on which one to start on the first of the next month.

**Notice the word "voluntary." You do NOT have to participate in these if you don't want to, but it would be more fun if you would. No one is obliged to read with us.**

Would you want to participate in this? If so, try to come up with 1 - 2 books for next month's Voluntary Read. Post your suggestions in the appropriate topic.

Thanks for the constant support, and happy reading,

Zakiya :D

Angela B | 425 comments Hunny Mandatory means that it is required Mandatory and Obligatory are synonyms

Optional reads or Voluntary might be better thing to call it :)

message 3: by Angela (new)

Angela B | 425 comments I would be interested in participating though I will nominate books all the time but depending on what books win I wouldn't always read them :)

message 4: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) LOL! Angela, you think I would know that as much as I used it this year... Eeesh, I'm going to be dumb when school comes back around. Thanks for catching my mmistake :)

message 5: by Angela (new)

Angela B | 425 comments No problem! I was just a bit confused and thought other people might be also!

message 6: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) I've corrected it now. Natasha: That's because my mind is going bad, thats all. :)

Angela: Same here with me. I will try to read them, or at least discuss, but I know that won't always be possible. :)

message 7: by Zakiya (last edited Jul 22, 2010 03:21PM) (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Haha, thanks. At least someone has some hope for me. It's just the fact that I have a terrible mem, and I don't look at what I type most of the time, so if I make mistakes, I never notice. Glad to have observational ppl in our group :D

message 8: by Heather (new)

Heather (nickyblue7) | 486 comments i have some suggested reads! :D how about Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side
Going Bovine

message 9: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Thanks, Heather! Those sound realy interesting; I will add them to the list :)

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh I want to read the guide to dating on the dark side :)

message 11: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Hehe, that's good that we're all commonly interested in books. Maybe we won't have much of a problem with the voting (aka, the numbers be really close, and it's hard to decide). THE POLL IS UP!!!!!

message 12: by Catrina (new)

Catrina (ninasama) I'm interested! I just hope it isn't a book I've already read! :)

message 13: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Catrina, I understand that! If you have already read whichever book is chosen, though, would you be kind enough to discuss with us?

message 14: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) great idea, the VRs!

message 15: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Thanks, Leo! It's Sherri's idea, but I guess it's a good thing I looked back at the topic, or it never would've become official! :D.

message 16: by Erica (new)

Erica | 76 comments What's the date that the read starts on? August 1st?

message 17: by Sherri (new)

Sherri (sherrij2003) | 170 comments :)

message 18: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Yep! Our first VR will start on August 1st. They will always start on the 1st of every month. Unless something happens and we have to change the date. :).

message 19: by Catrina (new)

Catrina (ninasama) Of course I can discuss if I have already read it! Hehe. I've just never read along with others, so I wanted the experience! :)

message 20: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Well I hope you get that experience soon! I've not read a single book on the poll. :). And thank you! I'm glad that you will at least discus if you've already read it.

message 21: by Sherri (new)

Sherri (sherrij2003) | 170 comments So every month do we keep the same books suggested by the previous month and add any new suggestions? And if we read a book in a series do we put the sequal on the poll for the next month?

message 22: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) Well I just voted in the poll. I voted for Janet Evanovitch because I have heard so many good things about her. I have already read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

message 23: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Oh okay. Well, may the best book win!

Sherri: I'm not sure. Iactually hadn't thought of that. What do you guys think? If we put the sequel up, that would help a lot of people get them out of te way. I was thinking new books every month. Plus, if we have losers from the past month on the poll, it doesn't leave a lot of slots for new books. I thin kwe should keep the first two runner-ups and then the rest can be new books. Thoughts???

message 24: by Sherri (new)

Sherri (sherrij2003) | 170 comments Sounds good to me...another thought though...2 Buddy Reads a month?? One starts on the 1st, one on the 15th?

message 25: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) That's the way Elyssa and I thought it would best work. But for Breaking Dawn, it will take longer so we don't think there will be one on the 1st of Aug. What do you think?

message 26: by Angela (new)

Angela B | 425 comments Breaking Dawn is long but not very hard to read but since I haven't been doing a lot of it I shall not put in an opinion on the buddy read part!

I personally think we shouldn't automatically put the runners up in the poll but that people can re-nominate them if they are still interested in reading them the next month. Partly because a lot of people are mood readers and might have changed there mind by next month...However it ends up working I'll still vote and nominate so it doesn't matter to me! I do like the idea of putting a sequel of something we've already read up for a vote!

Did you say how many VR's we are going to have each month?

message 27: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Angela, I understand about BD. I haven't been able to do a lot of reading either. We will probably have to include this in the next broadcast I send out.

I will def take heed to putting sequels on the poll/s. A lot of people get stuck in the middle of series, so that might help them a little. And I wasn't sure what we should do with the runner-up thing. But I get what you're saying. I also agree with you. Some people will have def changed their moods... If they renominate the book/s, then the novels will just be up there. :)

message 28: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Oh uhm... Fore the VRs I was thinking just one every month. To give time to read it thoroughly and not feel pushed to finish it really fast. Your thoughts???

message 29: by Angela (new)

Angela B | 425 comments I don't care much either way I was just curious, I have some groups that do 2 or even 4 and I personally don't feel pushed because you don't have to do them :)

But 1 is great :)

message 30: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) LOL! Alrighty. I just like having other opinions on things like this. :).

message 31: by Angela (new)

Angela B | 425 comments Well I'm full of opinions :) If you want a lot of opinions you could also post a poll asking if people would want two opinions for the VRs

message 32: by Shay (new)

Shay | 862 comments I would think that especially if the top two books were very different that having two VR's might encourage people to at least read one. Also, maybe they could be staggered, one to start on the 1st and one on the 15th. I think most people here read at least two a month if there are those that wanted to read both.

message 33: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Thanks, to the both of you! I think I will make a poll for this, and maybe even make a poll asking if we should sequels, runner-ups, or both on the VR polls.

Great poll idea Angela! :D. And thanks, Shay, for your opinion! :P.

message 34: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments Looking at the polls so far it looks like there will be 2 voluntary reads a month...will you be posting 2 polls one for 1st pick and one for the 2nd pick or just do one poll and have the top 2 for the reading

message 35: by Zakiya (last edited Aug 12, 2010 03:27PM) (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) I'm really not sure. I want the books to be from different genres, you know? But from the books recommended, that might not be possible (I haven't looked at them yet). I might just stick to top 2 and see how that goes. What's your opinion?

message 36: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments I think the top 2 would be fine...less hassle. And it will give a little more variety for some months anyway.

message 37: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Alrighty. Thanks, Meghan! :D

message 38: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments Mmmmm...is my computer the only one that still has GWTDT as the group read instead of Clockwork Angel and Mockingjay.

message 39: by Heather (new)

Heather (nickyblue7) | 486 comments no mine has it too

message 40: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments I hope nobody minds I changed the reading status of the books so that GWTDT is marked as "Read" and CLockwork Angel and Mockingjay are marked as "Currently Reading"

message 41: by Zakiya (last edited Sep 04, 2010 07:35AM) (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) LOL! Sorry, got caught up in everything, and forgot to change it. I didn't even notice it had been changed!! Hah, thanks Meghan! :D

message 42: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments Z: Just wondering will we be doing two VRs next month as well. I usually try to read the VRs if possible.

message 43: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) I'm not sure. Nevermore won the poll, but I'm not sure what genre you would consider that. We could do the next winner, which is Ruined. What do you think?

message 44: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments I don't really know. I was just asking because I thought that was why we took the poll earlier. And also if a sequel to one that we are reading that month is out then that also goes on the poll. I don't know it is really up to you all.

message 45: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Well you all said we shouldadd sequels and runner-ups to the poll, but only if someone nominated them. Sooo... Not that there are any sequels to Clockwork Angel or Mockingjay, but I didn't use the runner-ups because they weren't nominated..

message 46: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments I know that there are not any sequels to Clockwork Angel or Mockingjay. I was just wondering. It doesn't really matter to me either way. I will read at least one of the VRs every month anyway and try to read the other if there are two. Whichever you chose to do. Thanks Z!

message 47: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) No problem! :). I'm thinking about putting Ruined as the second VR, but I'm not sure yet.

message 48: by Shay (new)

Shay | 862 comments For Suzanne Collins, you could maybe add her other series, The Underland Chronicles. The first one in that series is Gregor the Overlander (Underland Chronicles, #1) by Suzanne Collins . I liked this series, too.

message 49: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) How about we put this book on the November Voluntary Read poll? I was just about to make a topic for nominees.

message 50: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments maybe...and i'm really bad about doing group reads anyways ;), you guys as the mods could pick 2 or 3 subgenres each month and then people could nominate books for those sub-genres and then poll...

i.e. science-fiction; historical fiction; classics etc
