One Million Pages Per Lifetime discussion

While talking about what books would be good for a Buddy Read, our fellow member Sherri said: "How about the middle of each month we pick a book to start the 1st of the next month and you can participate or not...then discuss?!?!"

Automatically, the discussion heated up a little. We know that not everyone is into books that other people are into. In the middle of every month, we can get together some books that we have been eager to read, and vote on which one to start on the first of the next month.

**Notice the word "voluntary." You do NOT have to participate in these if you don't want to, but it would be more fun if you would. No one is obliged to read with us.**

Would you want to participate in this? If so, try to come up with 1 - 2 books for next month's Voluntary Read. Post your suggestions in the appropriate topic.

Optional reads or Voluntary might be better thing to call it :)

I would be interested in participating though I will nominate books all the time but depending on what books win I wouldn't always read them :)

Haha, thanks. At least someone has some hope for me. It's just the fact that I have a terrible mem, and I don't look at what I type most of the time, so if I make mistakes, I never notice. Glad to have observational ppl in our group :D

Yep! Our first VR will start on August 1st. They will always start on the 1st of every month. Unless something happens and we have to change the date. :).

Of course I can discuss if I have already read it! Hehe. I've just never read along with others, so I wanted the experience! :)

So every month do we keep the same books suggested by the previous month and add any new suggestions? And if we read a book in a series do we put the sequal on the poll for the next month?

Well I just voted in the poll. I voted for Janet Evanovitch because I have heard so many good things about her. I have already read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Sherri: I'm not sure. Iactually hadn't thought of that. What do you guys think? If we put the sequel up, that would help a lot of people get them out of te way. I was thinking new books every month. Plus, if we have losers from the past month on the poll, it doesn't leave a lot of slots for new books. I thin kwe should keep the first two runner-ups and then the rest can be new books. Thoughts???

That's the way Elyssa and I thought it would best work. But for Breaking Dawn, it will take longer so we don't think there will be one on the 1st of Aug. What do you think?

Breaking Dawn is long but not very hard to read but since I haven't been doing a lot of it I shall not put in an opinion on the buddy read part!

I personally think we shouldn't automatically put the runners up in the poll but that people can re-nominate them if they are still interested in reading them the next month. Partly because a lot of people are mood readers and might have changed there mind by next month...However it ends up working I'll still vote and nominate so it doesn't matter to me! I do like the idea of putting a sequel of something we've already read up for a vote!


Did you say how many VR's we are going to have each month?

Angela, I understand about BD. I haven't been able to do a lot of reading either. We will probably have to include this in the next broadcast I send out.

I will def take heed to putting sequels on the poll/s. A lot of people get stuck in the middle of series, so that might help them a little. And I wasn't sure what we should do with the runner-up thing. But I get what you're saying. I also agree with you. Some people will have def changed their moods... If they renominate the book/s, then the novels will just be up there. :)

Oh uhm... Fore the VRs I was thinking just one every month. To give time to read it thoroughly and not feel pushed to finish it really fast. Your thoughts???

I don't care much either way I was just curious, I have some groups that do 2 or even 4 and I personally don't feel pushed because you don't have to do them :)

Well I'm full of opinions :) If you want a lot of opinions you could also post a poll asking if people would want two opinions for the VRs

I would think that especially if the top two books were very different that having two VR's might encourage people to at least read one. Also, maybe they could be staggered, one to start on the 1st and one on the 15th. I think most people here read at least two a month if there are those that wanted to read both.

Looking at the polls so far it looks like there will be 2 voluntary reads a month...will you be posting 2 polls one for 1st pick and one for the 2nd pick or just do one poll and have the top 2 for the reading

I'm really not sure. I want the books to be from different genres, you know? But from the books recommended, that might not be possible (I haven't looked at them yet). I might just stick to top 2 and see how that goes. What's your opinion?

I think the top 2 would be fine...less hassle. And it will give a little more variety for some months anyway.

I hope nobody minds I changed the reading status of the books so that GWTDT is marked as "Read" and CLockwork Angel and Mockingjay are marked as "Currently Reading"

Z: Just wondering will we be doing two VRs next month as well. I usually try to read the VRs if possible.

I don't really know. I was just asking because I thought that was why we took the poll earlier. And also if a sequel to one that we are reading that month is out then that also goes on the poll. I don't know it is really up to you all.

Well you all said we shouldadd sequels and runner-ups to the poll, but only if someone nominated them. Sooo... Not that there are any sequels to Clockwork Angel or Mockingjay, but I didn't use the runner-ups because they weren't nominated..

For Suzanne Collins, you could maybe add her other series, The Underland Chronicles. The first one in that series is . I liked this series, too.

How about we put this book on the November Voluntary Read poll? I was just about to make a topic for nominees.

maybe...and i'm really bad about doing group reads anyways ;), you guys as the mods could pick 2 or 3 subgenres each month and then people could nominate books for those sub-genres and then poll...

i.e. science-fiction; historical fiction; classics etc
