and this one comes out soon...

I haven't read them yet, but I might, as my kids loved the first two, and the library is throwing a party for the Mockingjay release. What do you think?

Rachel | 1106 comments I loved the first one! I want the second book!

message 4: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) they are good. I just finished listening to the first two and have the third on hold at my library. The premise is actually rather dark, but it has all the elements of a good story. I could see these being as popular as HP and not as daunting because there are only 3 in the series and they are not as long. I listened to both books in just a few days at work, so I am sure they would be quick reads.

Sarah | 13814 comments They're excellent books, RA.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments What, you haven't read them yet, RA?! Didn't I sent your boys the second book? What are you waiting for???

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I'm very excited to hear that my sister plans on buying the third one as soon as it comes out. I've been soooooooo good and not bought the first two, and I hate buying the third in a series without owning the previous books, and the library will make me wait forever. So this will be perfect. I'll see her at the end of August and steal it from her.

message 8: by Julie (new)

Julie | 568 comments Yeah, I really like them too. I can't wait for Mockingjay to come out.

message 9: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, I'm on it...thanks, people...:)

message 10: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) also ...I love the name Katniss!

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Heh. I hate the name, but everything else makes up for it.

message 12: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (moxie) I thought the first book was a bit like the Japanese book Battle Royale(also a great movie). But I got attached to the characters enough that I'm anxious for Mockingjay.

message 13: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Welcome to TC, Kristine!

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I second RA's welcome Kristine.

message 15: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (moxie) Thanks! I'm not online a lot but this group looked interesting.

message 16: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments My son got his copy last night...

message 17: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (moxie) I'm patiently waiting for a library copy. Hopefully it won't be too long of a wait. Meanwhile, Justin Cronin's 760-some page The Passage is keeping me occupied.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Just griping in another group that my pre-ordered book is finally now showing that it shipped, but there's no tracking info yet. I could have went to the store and purchased a copy already!

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments My 12 yr old niece loves these and just got to attend an author signing/party in Utah. She was beyond excited! As a note, she did NOT love the Twilight series. :)

I have to say that I'm really appreciating some of the young adult novels coming out, and I'm going to check this series out. The one I'm reading is The Mortal Instruments Boxed Set: City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass by Cassandra Clare and it's very good. We also enjoyed Percy Jackson and the Olympians Boxed Set which I've been reading with my 9 yr old. She knows more about the Greek Olympians at this age than I did in high school!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I love both Mortal Instruments and Percy Jackson. MI is my favorite YA series, with Hunger Games and Percy Jackson following right behind. After those, I'd say Morganville Vampires are fun, simply because it's sort of the anti-Twilight. I like that the kids in Morganville are terrified of the vamps that run the town (who are all adult...no sparkly teen vamps in the bunch).

Another trilogy that I stumbled onto recently that's good (so far) is the study series. The main character is slated for execution for killing her attacker in self defense, when she's given a pardon - the catch is that she needs to become a poison taster and risk death anyway. The series is fantasy based.

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments It's really too bad when things go awry at that level. I'm looking into doing copyediting/proofing because I'm such a nut about those kinds of errors. They can ruin a whole book for you!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) So now that Mockingjay has been out for over a week, has anyone gotten around to reading it?

This book was much more dark than the previous two (which sounds weird, since the first two were all about death). The first two books had more light moments in them, whereas the third was serious pretty much the whole way.

message 24: by Phoenix (new)

Phoenix (phoenixapb) | 1619 comments I agree Stacia, it was quite a bit darker. I really liked it but I also cried towards the end...and that's something that doesn't happen very often for me.

message 25: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Oh man I keep hearing about people crying towards the end. I'm about 1/3 of the way through.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I didn't cry, but my eyes misted over a couple times. That's about as close as I get to crying over books.

message 27: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) please no spoilers! can't wait to get my copy from the library.

message 28: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I don't think that's weird. I totally get it.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Would it be best if you read these in order, or doesn't it matter?

message 30: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Yeah, I think it matters.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Yes. This is one series that you would lose far too much if you read them out of order.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Bun, I understand about not wanting to read Mockingjay. I started it, and then put it aside and have been rereading the first two. I think it needs momentum.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I had a hard time getting through the first half of Mockingjay because it was so different from the first two and wasn't holding me the same way.

The second half was like a hit to the gut and I couldn't stop reading.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks guys, I'll have to get my hands on the first two.

message 35: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Yeah, I'm right there Stacia!

Is this stuff YA?

message 37: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) yes, but it is really easy to get caught up in....more YA and older.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) The only thing YA about these books is the age of the main character and her love interest(s). The books center around a complete government takeover and what it would be like if we lost all of our freedoms as a society. The government chooses to flaunt its power by forcing underage representatives from each district to fight to the death in a battle royale scenario.

Age aside, the books are full of discussion-worthy content. I've read them, my husband has read them, and my older son has read them, and we've all equally found the books captivating.

It doesn't really roll off the tongue does it?

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I loved them all. I hadn't even heard of them until everyone was raving about Mockingjay, so I got to read them straight through one after the other (which is always best, waiting sucks). I can't decide if book two or three was my favorite, but the series over all is a strong 4 - 4 1/2 star series.

message 43: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I think I've met a lot of people who go by "Kat" or "Cat" that bring to mind something that Katniss doesn't, but the association remains.

I'm not sure I would be able to read these books. They're in the present tense!

Jan | 241 comments >>I hadn't even heard of them until everyone was raving about Mockingjay, so I got to read them straight through one after the other<<

I had never heard of this triliogy, but since Mockingjay has been brought up so often, I decided to read the first few pages of The Hunger Games on Amazon. I was surprised at how easily the words flowed, leaving me wanting more. This isn't usually my type of book but I'm seriously thinking of getting the first one and seeing if I take to it. It's the writing that gets you.

Not yet, Stacia...new William Gibson is out:)

message 48: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) well, I finished Mockingjay today and frankly I expected more. I just didn't really like any of this third book. Without giving anything away, I was not invested in characters that died because they were hardly mentioned in this book. Then they die and that's that. I didn't like the final HP either... the endings are too neat and tidy for my taste.

message 49: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I like the series, but I can certainly agree with your conclusions.

Sarah | 13814 comments I liked it, but agree with your points as well.
