Riverina Romantics (riverinaromantics) I have always had to read books brand new - for me it is so much more exciting to open a brand new book.

I want to know if people buy books or borrow from the library. If you purchase books do you do it locally or over the net.

I have been buying mine of the book depo. http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/ because they are extremely better priced then what I can get them locally - does anyone know of any better websites?

Andrea | 69 comments I get mine from Book Depository as well. Some of the more popular series I get from K-Mart or Big W but book sotres are way too expensive.
Books in Australia are soooo expensive compared to other places, it's a joke!!

message 3: by Amy (new)

Amy (amescat) | 279 comments I get most of my books from the library. For the books that the library doesn't carry I use booksfree.com - it's an online service similar to netflix but for books.

If I purchase books it's usually through Barnes and Nobel online.

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) I have been buying a lot of books from www.abebooks.co.uk They are extremely reasonably priced and they have both new and used books. I just brought Dead as a Doornail for £0.66 plus p&p. Well worth a look. Other then that I buy a lot of books from play.com as well.

Sasa (sasaboba) | 25 comments I look for books in the library first but it doesn't have a huge collection so I have to buy most of my books. I look for it locally and on the internet, depending on the price (if I have a coupon, I'll buy locally; if I don't, I'll buy it online). Locally, I shop at Borders and The Book Rack. Online, I shop at Amazon or eBay. I also recently heard of Lulu through Goodreads but I've never shopped there before. If I ever buy online, Amazon is my first choice because of the free shipping for those who buy $25 worth or more and my "to read" shelf is huge so it's all worth it :3

Riverina Romantics (riverinaromantics) Thanks heaps, being in Australia is very hard in finding cheap books, everything is so expensive.

Fani *loves angst* (fanip) Someone recently pointed me to www.bookdepository.co.uk as well and I've been using it a lot lately because of the good prices and lack of shipping costs. I also use play.com sometimes and ebay.com for those that are out of print. Before that I shopped mainly at Amazon.co.uk but I stopped, because not only of the shipping costs but because ever since they switched to Deutch Mail, it takes close to 3 weeks to get the books here instead of 5 days as it used to.

message 8: by Bri (new)

Bri (silversleep) I buy all mine at Borders ;D And have spent tons!

message 9: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 69 comments I noticed that there's also bookdepository.com as apposed to bookdepository.co.uk and it seems a bit cheaper! Not sure why?!

Fani *loves angst* (fanip) Andrea wrote: "I noticed that there's also bookdepository.com as apposed to bookdepository.co.uk and it seems a bit cheaper! Not sure why?!"

I just noticed that myself! I'm also glad to notice that I have been ordering at bookdepository.com instead of co.uk:) Also noticed that both sites contain my orders in the Order History tab, so they're definitely linked. Weird...

message 11: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 69 comments Very weird! I thought at first they wouldn't be linked but I can log in to both sites with the same login details!! Well I guess I know where I'll be buying my books from now on!! Lol

message 12: by Brenna (new)

Brenna Lyons (BrennaLyons) | 177 comments I typically buy my books and get them locally (if possible). When I'm already making an online purchase or want to get something ON release day...reliably...I buy online.

I do occassionally borrow books from the library or buy them used, but I tend to buy books new more than this.

Brenna

message 13: by Laura Beth (new)

Laura Beth (tampabookworm) The majority of the books I read come from the library. If I just have to have it or I cannot get it from the library I try to get it from PaperBackSwap.Com and if that doesn't work I go to Barnes & Noble or order from Amazon.Com or Overstock.Com

Jen ~The dreamer~ | 649 comments deepdiscount.com is where I get most of my books. They're cheap and free shipping.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 80 comments I get books from everywhere. My mother buys bags of books at yard sales for me. People give books to me. I hit one of the libraries 3-4 times per week. I go through streaks where I stop at HalfPrice almost every day when I'm into a series and really want the next book. I hit B&N a couple of times a month. I've had a few people trade books online with me here through GR. I trade books with the neighborhood ladies. People through work give me books. Amazon.com has seen me a few times... I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but that's where I get most of them.

message 16: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 449 comments Since I'm running out of space I try to get most of my books from the library or free downloads to my Kindle. When I buy books I either go to the local used bookstore, Book Depository, Borders or Amazon. And my friends and I trade books.

message 17: by Angela (new)

Angela (angbens) | 343 comments I do a mixture of new, borrowed and used. I don't buy a book new unless I get a really good price or it's a book I REALLY want. I get alot on this sites swap. I buy alot of book when I belong to Doubleday. I get really good deals through that site.

Irene Angel | 9 comments i get almost all my books from downloading because in greece i can't find ANYTHING i look for so i don't have a choise and i can only read through my computer... i spend so many hours in front of the screen every day that i have become used to it, but i long to have a REAL book in my hands... of course i LOVE going to the bookstores (we don't have libraries...) and browse for hours greek books! but the specific type of books (paranormal romance & vampires) doesn't exist here... i have to order them from the other side of the world and i can't afford the price for more than one or two! we have an economical crisis, for god's sake!

message 19: by Patricia (last edited Jul 21, 2010 05:35AM) (new)

Patricia (catnaping) I use several places Walmart,Barnes and Nobles,Borders,Half price books and alot from the Library.I used to use Overstock and Tower online but they raised the books to full price. Now online I use Amazon,Half.com and Abebooks

message 20: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 209 comments Chapters. I try and borrow from friends but I find if I love the book then I want to own it so I can re read it whenever I want.
I know loser. LOL

Jen ~The dreamer~ | 649 comments I'm the same way Deanne, if I love a book or series, I'll buy it so I can read it over again as well. I've got a lot of series books off Ebay for super cheap.

Fani *loves angst* (fanip) Irene wrote: "i get almost all my books from downloading because in greece i can't find ANYTHING i look for so i don't have a choise and i can only read through my computer... i spend so many hours in front of t..."

Irene, I'm also from Greece and lately I've been ordering books from bookdepository.com and play.com which have no shipping costs. The average book prices are 5.00 to 7.00 euros which I guess are not more than the price of an ebook.

message 23: by Drea (new)

Drea | 9 comments I go to either Borders or Barnes and Noble. I almost always go to the store. I usually try to go to Borders over B & N because of the rewards and the coupons. A couple reasons why I almost never order books on-line...first I love being in a book store, I could potentially spend hours in one just looking for books and second I hate having to wait for books to be shipped. If I decide there is a book that I want to read, I want it in my hands right away, so I'd just rather go to the store, and why waste the money on shipping when I can get it cheaper if I go to the store?

hey, thanks! i'll look for this site!

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I always buy my books. Im abit weird with borrowing books from the library, because of all the other ppl thats been touching it before me etc. And i like to own the book, to be the first one to read that copy, so you dont have broken pages etc all around ;p.

I buy mine usually over the net, but sometimes at the book shops in town

message 26: by jD (new)

jD (jd_4everbooked) | 152 comments I didn't know about booksfree.com. I am so taking advantage of that. I use the library or my Kindle. Certain books I buy because I share them with friends, in that case, I go to online coupon sites for in-store discounts from Borders.

message 27: by Stephine (new)

Stephine (paranormalhaven) | 81 comments When I do online shopping I go to either Bookdepository.com because of the free shipping or Amazon.com because there is free shipping after $25 and a lot of the books I read are 4 for 3.

When I actually go out to get a book I have 2 wonderful used bookstores close to my house or I like Borders because I can always find a coupon for them.

message 28: by Stephine (new)

Stephine (paranormalhaven) | 81 comments As for the books I get for my Kindle, I prefer Amazon because they send it directly to my Kindle and I don't have to worry about plugging it in but if I find it cheaper else where then that is where I will get it from.

message 29: by Amy (new)

Amy (amescat) | 279 comments JD...you can get 20% off your first month with booksfree.com with code GF5X8

I've been a member for about 9 months and enjoy it a great deal because I can get books that the library doesn't carry and they have some books that are hard to find.

message 30: by Ez (new)

Ez (ezrah-rah) | 219 comments I get my books from a variety of places. Mainly Amazon.com, but I occasionally buy from Barnes & Noble, Borders, Half Price Books, and a local used bookstore. I also swap books on PaperBackSwap.com fairly often and I sometimes borrow books from the library.

message 31: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 216 comments I also like to buy new books from Bookdepository as well as Amazon, Borders, and Barnes and Noble. I don't mind my books being used, so I also shop at Half Price Books as well as www.thriftbooks.com .

I know!! Mid $20s and $30 for a paperback, or a bit less than$20 if you're lucky. Ridiculous. I used to think that the book prices here were normal. Book Depository has become my best friend. It's fast and so much cheaper.

Sometimes I go buy from local shops because they have good deals. Like the other day, I got Prom Nights from Hell for $4.

I also get a lot of mine from paperback swap. I've been there a little over a year and I love it!

message 34: by Teagan (new)

Teagan Rand (TeaganR) | 4 comments I tend to use the library a lot if I'm after non-fiction, and Amazon for my fiction or books I really want to own. What I miss are the old smaller bookstores that have been gobbled up by the big chains; the small places just seemed more cozy, and the staff really seemed to care about books.

Used bookstores are wonderful, and you never know what you might find there.

message 35: by Karin Elisabeth (new)

Karin Elisabeth (goodreadscomkarinelisabeth) | 34 comments I heavily depend on Amazon because in Austria so far they ship for free and most of the time I don't have to wait for longer than three to four days.
I tried Bookdepository but I still think that book walked across Europe - it took so long to get it.
If I want to read English books - which I obviously do because I hate bad translations - I can't go to the library unless I want to borrow books from the middle of the last century or so.
But thank you all for giving such good suggestions where to buy books online.

*Ash* (ashdex) | 73 comments i borrow from the library, if they don't have it i try used book stores, then i resort to the "big" book stores.

message 37: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) the library, amazon.com, borders and borders.com, and barnes and noble and B&N.com.

message 38: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I belong to two large library systems -- Chicago and then my suburb that I live in which has joined with 80 libraries - so I get the majority of my books through the library. Including new releases. I check my accounts daily and check for new releases and sign up right away. I usually get the new releases the same week they are out. I also get the majority of my audio through these libraries through overdrive.com.

I also have a Kindle and if I really want the book and will keep it, I but it in ebook from Amazon. I also buy alot of indie authors, get free classics -- on my kindle.

Before I had my Kindle I would get books from Amazon brand new. If I wanted an older book (and I do this for my kids books), I would check out the used books for sale on Amazon or on ebay. So I guess I do a variety. :)

Me, too! It's a great site. :)

message 40: by Rochelle (new)

Rochelle (toastqueen) I get a bunch from my mother-in-law who has similar interests to me (and got me hooked on PNR!)
Secondly I get stuff from the library. Our intralibrary loan system is pretty good and I can usually find what I want, it might just take a while.
Then, if I either can't wait or want to own the book, I buy it either on Amazon.com or at a Border's store where I can get a good discount for being part of their rewards program.

message 41: by Rizzaleen (new)

Rizzaleen | 10 comments I download -books from 4shared.com since right now I'm broke haha I so want a Barnes and Noble store here!

message 42: by Joanne (new)

1. Audiobooks public librrary
2. Audible.com
3. Amazon.com kindle store
4. Amazon.ca

I very occasionally go to the UBS because I forget what I need and and up with duplicates.

message 43: by Laura (new)

message 48: by Carri (new)

Carri (carrifedor) I TRY TO GET MOST OF MINE AT THE LIBRARY. IF I LIKE THEM, I LIKE TO OWN THEM, SO I USUALLY BUY AT BORDERS.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 411 comments I try out my library first most the time, I find it is much easier, espcially if I am not sure if I want to buy it. Otherwise I always get my books from Amazon as I get free shipping, plus I don't like to spread my credit card details around.

message 50: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sandram1967) | 71 comments I try to get them from the library first. Gone are the days when I could afford to buy all my books. I used to never borrow books from the library. Lack of money makes a huge difference.
