Sara (saragoldman) | 1 comments I'm looking for a collection of short stories which I read in the early to mid '80s, my favourite story was a supernatural set in Virginia; an English girl visits there at Halloween and gets caught up in the hunting set who worship 'Sam Hain' and is/is almost sacrificed. I can't exactly remember the end but it was the best spooky story I ever read!

Mary | 41 comments Was it possibly Halloween Horrors?: http://www.amazon.com/Halloween-Horro...

It has a story called "Samhain Feis" by Peter Tremayne.

A description of the story: "Samhain Feis" was originally written in the Irish language. This English translation is a bit jerky but still a great Halloween read. An Irish-American woman has come to Ireland with her seven year old son to escape her awful marriage. She's chosen to vacation in a remote part of the country in order to make some decisions. A local man warns her that the hills she lives near are the home of some nasty creatures who come out on, you guessed it, Samhain Feis or Halloween.

Mary | 41 comments There's also Lord Samhain's Night by Jo Beverly -- it is a novella originally published as part of a story collection. But it came out in the 1990s.

Sara, are you still looking for this anthology? Several suggestions above.

Emlen | 51 comments I definitely read a collection with a story similar to this as a kid, which means it would be about the right date. However, I remember it being a man who's in danger, as he's in love with a woman from the Samhain-celebrating family. If I remember right, it was one in a series of scary-story collections endorsed by Alfred Hitchcock: I remember one of the collections was called "Witches' Brew," but I'm not sure if that was the right one.

Checked on this: the story I was thinking of was in Witches' Brew, which was published 1983; it's called "His Coat So Gay," by Sterling E. Lanier.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Emlen, I'm adding your suggestion to my to-read list. But Sara is mia, so, this is moved to abandoned.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Actually, I found the story in full online and read it. Good story, and indeed would fit the OP if we reversed the genders of the protagonists.
