Katherine I was wondering if it's "bad form" to start the next book early? This being my first book with the group, I am a little dubious at whether or not I can finish it in the given timeframe - especially since my vacation is over and I have to go back to work on Monday!

Adrienne (adriennemarietheresa) | 175 comments Oh my, by all means, read ahead. Lots of the girls - someone correct me if I am wrong! - read ahead to the *next* month's book even, so they can be ready for the discussion.

No worries, Kate, whether you read while the book is current or you'd like to read ahead. Reading ahead just has the double-edged sword of not being able to chat while you are reading it but then later being able to explode and gab all you want.

Katherine Ooh! Good to know :) How do you avoid spoilers while chatting about the book? It seems like people would be in different points in the book at different times? I just finished Haruki Murakami's "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" this morning, so I guess I'll start on Larsson today!

Adrienne (adriennemarietheresa) | 175 comments There used to be two threads per book, one spoiler and one spoiler free, but I think everything is lopped in together now... right? someone help me out here? lol

I'm fairly sure that that is the case. Just one thread. Read at your own risk. For instance, I waited and waited until I had finished reading Cutting for Stone before going into the discussion thread. Some people might not mind spoilers. Up to you. :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I always read before the date for the start of the discussion. I thought that's the way it was supposed to be done. You read, then you discuss.

Katherine Of course - having free will - I'm free to start at any time. But what's the fun of joining a book club (even a virtual one) if you don't make the most of it!

Usually I read them early. We tried to do multiple threads with spoilers and those without but it became a true hassle and everything just became muttled together. I think most of these reads aren't epic novels so it doesn't work to break them down that way. The Chunky Reads break down much better because they are so big and easier to digest that way.
I think most read ahead or read during those two weeks and expect spoilers to pop up during the discussion. The discussions usually hit key points of the book and kind of disect them. Then there are times that someone doesn't read the book during the time of the discussion at all, perhaps they couldnt find the book or their library had a lot of holds on it. Discussion are never deleted and often someone who just finished one of the books will be so anxious to talk about it they might bump up the discussion just to read through it or to bring up their own points or thoughts.
So long explaination even longer... You can read early, during, or after a discussion. It's whatever works for you there is no right or wrong. But do expect spoilers to be discussed when you open one of the threads if you are reading at the time.

Katherine Thanks for the clarification everyone :) I think I'll wait until I'm finished reading the book to dive into the discussion as I hate knowing anything about plots before I finish them.
