Interrupting the game to answer a question by Jessa
Jessa asked,"Oh, cool. I might have to check them out. So, there's no romance in them at all?"
Karen Chance has 2 series that are related, Cassandra Palmer (first book is Touch of Dark) and her Dorina Basarab (first book is Midnight's Daughter). Both books take place in the same area with many of the same characters. Each series, however, focuses on a different strong female character. There is some romance (Cassandra's series actually has a love triangle going on and Dorina has some prospects as well), but the Dorina series does not focus on that aspect as the Cassandra series).
The Cassandra's books focuses mainly on the a night club in Las Vegas owned by a Vampire who employs fae and a variety of supernaturals. The joke of the place is all the supernaturals are real, but the humans don't believe it. They think it's just a Vegas theme club. There are talking Tiki heads, Elvis impersonators, and a lot of other wacky things going on there.
The Dorina series is a bit more serious and focuses on the Vampires and Warlocks(or is it Wizards). She's a Dhampir - half human/half vampire. Most Dhampir are unable to function as a normal person and usually loose their grip on reality and become a danger to themselves and everyone around them. So far Dorina has overcome her battle with insanity, though it is a constant worry. Only a few of her kind exist and most are hunted down. She is a survivor and strong.
I like the whole idea of an author making up a world that doesn't exist and writing in a way that sucks me in to the story and, for that small portion of time, makes it somewhat believable and entertaining. Something that makes me guess what happens next and is not be predictable.
