Kathy | 363 comments I am currently reading more than one book: I have The Widow's Story (why not Tale?), Fellowship of the Rings, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil....and put away Female of the Species which was just downright disturbing.....

Johnnie (berfer) I will begin Works of Love (Kierkegaard's Writings, Volume 16) by Søren Kierkegaard in book form. It was recommended by a philosophy of religion prof. It has been called his best work. I wish there were sermons avail on this work.

Johnnie (berfer) Deborah wrote: "Have a copy of Moby Dick but never read it. A chapter a day sounds like a fun way to do it."

At least you won't get bogged down on the long chapters detailing what species of whales there are and how to kill a whale. The story is extremely slow but the writing is the most uncommon I have read in years. There are 135 chapters- some of which can be scanned or read as a separate essay. This kind of writing would not be tolerated today.

message 558: by Margarida (new)

Margarida (mar9292) I just finished I Am Number Four and it was such a huge disappointment. Talk about boring aliens... Anyway, I'm still going to watch the movie, maybe it's a little better than the book. And if not, I can always drool after Alex Pettyfer.

I'm currently reading Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and Sándor Márai'sThe Rebels. I completely adore Márai's writing style. Has anyone here read any of his books?

My daughter married into an Hungarian Family (she lives with them now) and this looks very interesting. Their movies are either quite good or hopelessly dark and existential. They seem to be heavily influenced by the darker German culture. I put it on the list.

Susan I'm now reading By the Time You Read This by Lola Jaye and it is a tear jerker right from the start!!! I'm sitting here smiling and crying at the same time!! Great read so far!!

I've never seen an Hungarian movie (I think), but I've read Sándor Márai's Embers and it was so dark and beautifully written I knew I had to read more books by the author. Short, but so good. You should try it. :)

message 562: by Susan (new)

Susan I am finally going to start Virgin River by Robyn Carr and I'm sure I'm going to love this series like everyone else has!!

Does not sound like a book I would normally be interested in but I'll take a chance- good writing often wins over just another good story.

Susan (suki553) | 9 comments Just finished reading St. Dale by Sharyn McCrumb. It was published in 2005, but I had never read it - shock! She's my favorite author! I recently read her book The Devil Amongst The Lawyers and it was so, so good! Any more Sharyn McCrumb fans out there????

Johnnie (berfer) Finished Dexter Is Delicious (Dexter, #5) by Jeff Lindsay and it is the better of the series. Dexter now has feelings of love, attachment and most importantly guilt! Where is the discussion? I don't see it up under monthly book talks yet.

Also reading . . .

Midnight at the Dragon Cafe - one of Toronto's picks. We're reading that for April's discussion at the HighPark Library. And also for Book Buzz which is TPL's online book discussion.

Galapagos - just started that - one of the clubs here at Goodreads is doing that one.

message 574: by Tara (last edited Apr 03, 2011 08:32AM) (new)

Tara Woolpy | 21 comments I just finished The Brothers Ashkenazi by I.J. Singer (I.B. Singer's older brother). It's an interesting romp through Jewish life in Poland from the turn of the century until just before WWII. The style is light but the subject matter is dark - especially as the anti-semitism mounts in the twenties and thirties.
