Eileen (silverstar98121) | 4 comments Who are your favorite local authors? Personally I love all of JA Jance's books, although the ones set in Seattle are the ones I started with. I even live in Belltown, and can point to the building where J.P. Beaumont supposedly lives. It's interesting to see places you know in stories.

Another local author I like is G.M. Ford. His Leo Waterman series of mysteries is hilarious. Fury, his first book in the Frank Corso series was fab, the other books in the series not so much.

I'm a big fan of Ursula Le Guin. I'm also quite fond of Kate Wilhelm.

Karen | 2 comments Laurie Notaro...when you want a book that makes you laugh out loud, read Laurie Notaro.

message 4: by Erin (new)

Erin | 4 comments I am a Sherman Alexie fan

message 5: by Maryam (new)

Maryam | 1 comments I like Earl Emerson

message 6: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 4 comments I like G. M. Ford. Among other things, he writes a mystery series, set in Seattle, whose main character is a detective called Leo Waterman. The first title in the series is "Who in Hell is Wanda Fuca?"

Another local author I like is Robert Dugoni. I found him by accident on the KCLS website when I was trying to check out one of J. A. Jance's books, "Damage Control." Dugoni wrote one with the same title and it's very good.

Karen | 2 comments I've never heard of G. M. Ford but it must be a person with a great sense of humor -- using initials like that before the name Ford and writing a book titled "Who the Hell is Wanda Fuca?" is hilarious. I'll have to look into author this sometime. Thanks!

message 8: by Jen (new)

Jen (jeninseattle) I really enjoy David Guterson. Snow Falling on Cedars is my favorite, but I really enjoyed his most recent one - The Other.

I'm intrigued by the G.M. Ford reference!

You might consider "The Mine" by Portland author Daniel Cobb (that's me). Thirty reviews on Goodreads and Amazon give this locally-set thriller 4.7 stars. Available on Amazon and most Portland independent bookstores, including Powell's Books and Annie Blooms Books.

The Mine by Daniel R. Cobb

Yours truly-
Dan

Martina the Book Fairy (book_fairy) | 2 comments I like urban fantasy/paranormal novels and in that genre some of my favorites are:
Richelle Mead
Caitlin Kittredge
Mark Henry
Kat Richardson
Patricia Briggs
Yasmine Galenorn

There are a ton! Seems like the PNW is a haven for paranormal fiction writers . . . go figure. :-)

I'm the Seattle-based author of Murder in Italy, the true story of Amanda Knox, the UW student convicted of killing her college roommate.

I'm happy to answer questions about the case, which is on appeal. I'm also thrilled to find time to read books myself, after three years of intense work on that book.

I'm still updating my Amanda Knox true crime blog, so you can catch the latest developments there. http://twitter.com/#!/Candace_Dempsey

Candace Dempsey | 3 comments Novelist and country western singer Willy Vlautin is one of my favorite NW authors. I just came back from reading at a bookstore in St. Helen, OR and it turns out that he lives near there. I love his latest book Lean on Pete, which is about a troubled boy and a racehorse (that's Pete). It takes place in Spokane, Portland, Boise and Montana. It's funny and tragic, like all of Willy's books.

Just wanted let you know that my book, The Palisades, was just made a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award. It concerns a mother and son coming together after a long time apart. Check it out at www.tomschabarum.com or on Amazon.

Betsy | 26 comments J.A. Jance, yes. Also Jayne Ann Krentz aka Jayne Castle aka Amanda Quick aka Amanda Glass aka (I can't remember ... Jennifer something), whenever I need something light and funny and romantic.

Amy Bradley (fractaldragon) | 11 comments Neal Stephenson. Just finished his latest, REAMDE, about 2 weeks ago. Fabulous!

message 20: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 26 comments I didn't realize Stephenson was NW. Where does he live?

message 21: by Amy (new)

Amy Bradley (fractaldragon) | 11 comments Apparently he lives in Seattle!

Betsy | 26 comments I really wanted to checkout G.M. Ford's Who in Hell Is Wanda Fuca?, but it's not available on Kindle or other e-book. I prefer to read on Kindle than paperback and certainly not hardback. It's so much easier for my aging eyes and hands.

I may try Fury first, and if I like it a lot, may break down and get a paperback of the other.

Tom | 3 comments I will be launching my new novel, Airstreaming, next week on Book Reads at 3pm PST on Blog Talk Radio. Set in Kansas, featuring 4 strong characters and a beautiful Airstream, this book was a labor of love and just received its first two 5 star reviews on Amazon.com from total strangers. I hope all you Airstream aficionados and local readers will give it a read.

Deanna Jewel (deannajewel) | 4 comments If you've not read any of Paty Jager's books yet, check out her site. She's from Oregon and has many wonderful books out.

I'm working on book four, Whispers at Ghost Point, which brings back three characters from my historical set in England 1778, No Turning Back. These three are reincarnated into the present and meet up again, but there's a ghost in the lighthouse bent on revenge, vowing to destroy happiness. Can a ghost from her past destroy her future? Details unravel as she sets to restore the abandon lighthouse! I've posted my new cover and the book is set to release in late August. I have links on my website to read Ch 1 - I hope you all enjoy it!

Alexander Fontana (pwrpen) | 4 comments Hi, I am the novelist of Pittock: The Voice of Portland. Yes, the same Henry L. Pittock of Pittock Mansion and the founding publisher of the Oregonian daily newspaper during the 1800s.

Should anyone have questions of the time and era please let me know. Pre-release books and T.V. interview available at PwrPen.com.

Thx. Alex

Betsy | 26 comments I just finished Alphabet of Thorn by Patricia McKillip. I read her Riddle of the Stars trilogy years ago and loved it. But I didn't realize she was from Portland until I read this one.

message 28: by Val (new)

Val (jazzyval) | 3 comments What an amazing group of writers you all are. I have read some of the mentioned books, and will eagerly look forward to more. I've lived in the NW long enough to gather some of its history. Since I'm also an editor, I recently published THE ANARCHIST'S GUIDE TO GRAMMAR (the best grammar book you'll ever need on your shelf). Also have written a couple of novels set in and around Tacoma. Had a good year in 2012; published 12 books, all on Kindle and 8 in paperback. My mantra: "Keep on writing your stories; if you don't no one else will."

message 29: by Betsy (last edited Mar 15, 2013 01:55AM) (new)

Betsy | 26 comments I just learned that C.J. Cherryh lives in Spokane. She's one of the best loved and most prolific sci-fi and fantasy authors. Very imaginative and very diverse. Too many books to mention; check out her page at C.J. Cherryh.

Joyce Yarrow | 3 comments Hi all - I'm a Seattle-based mystery author with books set in New York and Russia.

Russian Reckoning (Jo Epstein Mystery, #2) by Joyce Yarrow

I have many favorite NW authors, including Ursula le Guin, Tom Robbins, J A Jance, Jeanne Matthews, and Jane Isenberg.

message 32: by Will (new)

Will North | 5 comments Hello from Vashon Island. I'm the author of 18 books. The latest, Harm None, due out next month, is the first in a mystery series set in Cornwall, England. Watch for it at www.willnorthonline.com.

message 33: by Joyce (new)

Joyce Yarrow | 3 comments I now have a new favorite NW author - Brian Doyle, author of Mink River. The book literally sings as I hold it in my hand.

As a mystery writer dedicated to tight and pithy tales telling, I rediscovered my love for writing that celebrates language. Mink River is a giant prose poem disguised as a novel, and am totally enjoying it.

Betsy | 26 comments Mike Shepherd, author of the space opera series about Kris Longknife, lives in Vancouver WA. I realized he must be a Northwesterner, when the protagonist's first adventure was on a planet named Sequim and her second adventure was on a planet named Olympia. 😊
