Oh My Goth: I couldn't pass up a YA read!
Challenge Task: Read one book written by our featured author
Challenge Duration: The whole month
C - Totally new to this author. Will see how I like it.
Date Complete: 10/20
You must also say if, after reading:
A - would definitely look at her other books, since I've enjoyed this one very much.
When I saw that Ms. Showalter wrote "edgy young adult" books, I couldn't pass it up. I know I'm supposed to read the romance ones, but this did have romance (just not sex). The book started out like a typical YA book and I found myself asking, "This is edgy?" Well, I had to read more to get to the edgy part. It goes SCI-FI after that, which was a pleasant surprise. Of course, the main characters are Goths, which was me in high school, so related to all that wanting to stand out angst. Overall, an enjoyable read. We didn't have this book at my library, but I would definitely ILL another one.

Choose For: Miss
A. The Ghost of Reading Past -
1) Insatiable by Meg Cabot helped me give Adult books another chance. I usually read YA, and I thought since Meg Cabot writes YA too, I would like it. I would classify it as paranormal romance.
2) The Giver by Lois Lowry was recommended to me by a former teacher. It is sci-fi/alternate reality. It is a haunting book that makes you see your world differently. My favorite part is the end--so you'll have to let me know what you think if you choose this one.
B. The Ghost of Reading Present -
1) Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. I started reading this after watching the HBO series True Blood. It is different from the series, so there are still surprises. I haven't finished it yet.
2) The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. I gave this as a gift to my BFFs teenage daughter. It gives going through puberty a whole other dimension.
C. The Ghost of Reading Future -
1) Ice by Sarah Beth Durst. Retelling of East of the Sun and West of the Moon. Just fabulous. This book put me on a fairy tale kick.
2) Graceling by Kristin Cashore. I actually preferred Fire to Graceling, but Graceling was the first book, so you should read it first. They both have a strong female character kicking butt.
D. The Tiny Tim factor (totally optional but a worthwhile challenge)
1) The Julian Game by Adele Griffin
2) The Secret Garden is the only book I really re-read ever (unless I don't remember I read it in the first place). It is my favorite book, so I don't mind.

Goal: Softly Spoken 10/10 COMPLETE
Narrator: Gildart Jackson
I've become a big fan of listening to biographies, since "reading" Jen Lancaster's books. I can hear the storyteller's voice a little better this way. The narrator of the story is Gildart Jackson. He has a wonderfully rich, easy-to-understand British voice. Often while listening to biographies, I hear the narrator's voice as the AUTHOR's voice.
After a little research, I discovered Jackson played the role of Gideon on Charmed (one of my favorite shows). I'm glad I didn't know that before because it would have been disconcerting. I hope I haven't ruined it for anyone else because this book is AMAZING.
I love listening to humorous books because I often read ahead. Since I don't have that option when listening, I'm surprised into laughter by all the punch lines. Even though this book dealt with great loss, it was also light-hearted and incredibly funny.
If you've seen the movie, please do NOT be discouraged from reading the book. I laughed through most of it, often getting strange looks from co-workers. I've suggested it to everyone I come across. It is a story for everyone.
Benjamin Mee lets the reader into his life at a vulnerable time. I've never felt such a kinship with a book before.

Narrator: Emma Galvin
This book has been recommended to me countless times. I couldn't get started, though, with the page count. I like my books quick and compelling. When my family planned a trip that would have us in the car for six+ hours, I decided to give this story a chance.
We listened to a good chunk of the novel on our weekend adventure. My little one was put to sleep by the gentle voice of the narrator, and my husband and I were riveted by the story. I always liked the idea of the dystopian society divided into factions, where 16-year-olds must choose between their families and their dreams.
When I listen to audiobooks, I mostly choose biographies. I like to hear the author's voice, even though most of the books are read by actors. I "hear" the author. The narrator makes this book. Trice comes from a faction of selfless people, which makes her brave. She joins the dauntless, who are known for being fearless.
Trice is quiet and unassuming, small for her age but with a spark of rebellion. After she finds out she is divergent and cannot be manipulated by any faction, she has to come to terms with the enormity of her situation. She is alone, because being divergent makes her a target. Add to that her new faction's initiation rites, and you have something a bit like the Hunger Games.
The suspense of the book built until I had to forsake all other pleasures to finish it. I've watched MUCH less GG in the past few days. The audiobook forced me to be in the moment with Trice, which was hard to bear. When I read, I've been guilty of skipping to the good parts or looking ahead to see who survives. This is a great listen. Even though this book ends with a mother of a cliffhanger, I want to know more. I don't feel like I was cheated at all (Uh-hum Discovery of Witches) with the ending. There is more to this story to hear.

Narrator: James Langton
Langton narrates many classic books, such as The Divine Comedy and The Republic. He was classically trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He's won the AudioFile Earphones Award.
I listened to the first book of the Chronicles of Prydain, The Book of Three. He narrates the series, so I'll be listening to Langton for some time. As I was listening to the novel, I had the feeling that I had heard this voice before. Then, when the character Gurgi was introduced, I heard the voice of Hagrid. I checked, but the narrator was not Jim Dale.
The similarities to Jim Dale only add to my enjoyment of the narration. Langton has distinct voices for each character. He even has a good female voice. My esteem for a narrator is directly related to their ability to pull off a voice of the opposite sex. The pacing and timing were also superb.
My only negative comment were the lines delivered with a "he said loudly" type and did not match the description. Langton did not say the previous line loudly.
I listened to this book mostly when my son was sleeping and wearing headphones. I fell asleep listening several times which is unusual. I think the voice was so soothing it wore me out. I would love to hear more of this narrator and plan to finish the series by listening.

Narrator: Justine Eyre
I'm not sure what I disliked most, the narrator or the story. When I first heard the narrator, I pictured a ninety-year-old little British nanny. In fact, I pictured my Nana England (a voice I heard once a week on a phone call to the mother land all through elementary-- "love you nana"). I could put that aside since this vampire character could be hundreds of years old. I could suspend my disbelief for that.
Unfortunately, I could not believe the male impersonations. Add to that the inflections not matching the text, a.k.a. "he said in a soft voice full of lust" while the narrator is droning on and I barely got through this one.
Since I'm writing this for an audiobook challenge, I'll tell you a little more about Justine Eyre. She is an actress who has narrated over a hundred books (I hope most of them were not YA). She's won an Audie Award and three AudioFile earphone awards. She is known for her accents, which I will agree with b/c she did an American and Scottish accent very well (but it still sounded like a girl trying to sound like a man).
I'm not saying she is a bad narrator, but the voice wasn't right for this novel. I expect to hear youth in my YA audiobooks. I could definitely listen to Jane Austen being narrated by Eyre!
Now, for the book's story. Let me just say, I'm surprised my eyeballs didn't turn inside out with the amount of eye-rolling I had to do to get through this one. "Becoming human is so hard. Justin Enos is so HOT!" Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. The only interesting parts of the story were the MANY flashbacks to a better time. The best part of the book was the end.

Narrator: Hannah Friedman
Always a Witch is the sequel to Once a Witch. I read the first book and listened to this one. I can't say that the narration is what I heard in my head for Tamsin or Gran. Friedman is believable as a young adult voice. She did well with the men's parts, especially the older men. I could always tell who was talking before the "blah blah said" moment. I liked most the inflections presented by the narrator. She read with feeling!
I loved the first book's story and liked this one as well. The time traveling didn't make my head hurt too much b/c I was too caught up in the action of the time they were in. I loved the little historical facts thrown in, like when the Brooklyn Bridge was built.
Although I'd love to hear more about these characters, I think we've seen all we can of Tamsin (unless she miraculously gets her powers back). She fulfilled her destiny and we can imagine what her life will be like, now.

Narrator: Carine Montbertrand
The Extras is the last book in the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. Carine M. narrated all the previous books. This is the first one I've listened to instead of read, so I can't compare the voices. I imagine Tally's voices had to change throughout the series as her brain was altered. Aya Fuse had a youthful voice, full of excitement just like her character (albeit a bit on the whiny side).
I was wary to read this last book, because I didn't want to ruin the series. I read several reviews that didn't like it b/c the characters from previous books were not the focus. I'm so glad I did read it, though, because it's my favorite of the series BY FAR!
I felt an instant connection to Aya, perhaps that I never felt for Tally. I could easily relate to the media hungry world she lived in and her desperation to be delivered from obscurity. I think anyone who has a blog or Facebook page can understand Aya's angst. My favorite part of the book was the botched infiltration due to Radical Honesty. I don't know how Tally didn't lose it!

Narrator: Jodi Long
Although I gave this book a low star rating, I loved the narration. Long was Lily. Her gentle voice helped me imagine the perfect historical wife in China. Her characters took on distinct personalities with changing intonations. Every time I turned it on, I was instantly transported to the women's sitting room.
I rented this book after watching the movie, which is completely different. I liked the audio book better, but would like to try the novel. We only had the abridged version available at my library. I feel like I missed so much.
The story is a succession of disappointments and hardships. I can deal with that, and even the disgusting descriptions of foot binding. I had more trouble relating to the main character. I knew I would probably feel more kinship with Snow Flower as I did in the movie. I hoped there would be more to like about Lily in the book, but she felt flat to me. Even her anger was subdued. Perhaps, she is more vibrant in print?

Narrator: Luke Daniels
Luke Daniels has narrated several YA novels. I think the experience helped with this book. Some of the others I've listed to have worked mostly in adult fiction. He has a youthful voice with a dark edge which was perfect to play the part of teenage Victor Frankenstein.
I think this may be the only book I've listened to with a male narrator who DIDN'T have a British accent. Weird, right? Honestly, I don't often choose books with male protagonist. It's not a hard and fast rule, just the way it works out. It's nice to have a change of pace every once in awhile. I thoroughly enjoyed the action and adventure aspects of the book.
I do like this book in theory. However, I couldn't separate it from Mary Shelley's tale, so it just didn't make sense. Maybe, if I didn't know the original story so well? Maybe, I shouldn't compare the two. With fairy tale re-tellings, I enjoy when they stray from the original by leaps and bounds. I'm not sure why this is so different.

Narrator: Rebecca Soler
Without doing much digging, I can't find any information about Rebecca Soler other than she is an american voice actress. According to GR, she has narrated several YA novels.
Cinder is a re-telling of the classic fairy tale, Cinderella. The differences between the original and Cinder are immense. Cinder is a cyborg, mechanic who works for her adopted mother. But cyborgs are less than human in this world.
In addition to the evil stepmother and stepsisters. This story boasts an evil queen and kooky doctor. The handsome prince and his adviser also play large roles. Soler narrated all these characters with distinct voices. She emphasized the text as written. Most importantly, she let the characters emotions come out through her voice.
I was literally on the edge of my seat as I was listening to this book in my car. Yes, I was parked, so not a danger to myself or others. I was surprised the book ended with a cliff hanger. Is there more to the story? If so, I hope Soler will tell the rest.

Narrator: Tom Hollander
Tom Hollander is a British actor. He had parts in Pride and Prejudice (the bad one, IMO) and Pirates of the Caribbean. He has also done work in BBC radio.
I don't think I would have picked this book up if it hadn't been J.K. Rowling. I was curious. I think the writing style was very Rowling as well as the content with exploring the inner workings of characters and the dark side of humanity. I don't normally read adult books, so this was an exception. Even though I enjoyed the story, I will look more closely at the content before taking on another Rowling book.

2. Rate the narrator using Goodreads five star system.
3. Rate your listening experience:
A. The book was a better experience in audio - the narrator improved the story for you. You can't imagine just reading the book.
B. Eh, could take or leave the audio. The narrator didn't add anything for you, but wasn't bad either. You could listen or read, doesn't matter.
C. Blech, the narrator ruined the experience for you. There was something that pulled you out of the story or distracted you enough that you would not consider listening again - that would be a read only experience in the future.

You are welcome to pick any options that appeal to you, and they can be listened to in any order. There is obviously plenty of room for overlap among the genres listed...if a book fits in more than one, feel free to use whichever one works best for you. The book should be shelved in such a way that it's clear it fits the category/genre, but the shelf name doesn't need to match exactly. For example, if a book is shelved as "romance" and "suspense" but isn't shelved as "romantic suspense", it still works, or something shelved as "early american" or "colonial america" would work for "Historical - North American".
When posting your completed audiobooks, please include the item that qualifies the book, the title (preferably a link), the name of the narrator/narrators, date finished, and star ratings for both the story and narration.
Example:
1. Historical - European: More Than a Mistress, narrated by Rosalyn Landor - 1/3/15
Story: ★★★★ Narration: ★★★★★
2. Paranormal: Slave to Sensation, Narrated by Angela Dawe - 1/7/15
