15.4 - FALL EQUINOX
Read two books that have the same number of characters in their titles. Punctuation marks are characters. Spaces do not count as characters. Example: Innocent and Catch-22.

If a book has a subtitle (defined for this purpose as additional words following a colon after the main title), you may use it or not - your choice. For example, if your first book is Ford County: Stories (10 characters without subtitle, 18 with subtitle), you could use The Insider or The Elements of Style. If your book title includes a subtitle, the colon counts as a character if you use the subtitle, but it does not count as a character if you do not use the subtitle.

Kathy G. | 1931 comments It doesn't matter where the space falls? Like Inkheart and The River? (Sorry- but I want to be sure.)

no, doesn't matter at all, and it doesn't matter how many spaces are in it. Ignore spaces! Only characters count.

Liz M So everything but spaces count as characters? dashes, commas, apostrophes, exclamation marks, etc.

yes

ETA: if you're using a book with a subtitle, and not using the subtitle, then the colon does not count in the total number of characters (since it's not really part of the title of the book unless the subtitle is used).

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments no issues with reading two books by the same author? I was trying to find a way to fit kaki warner's books into the challenge and both have 11 characters in the title

Open Country
Pieces of Sky

Nope. The only thing that matters here is how many characters are in the title.

Barbara VA (barbarava) What about punctuation?

All "characters" in the title count, so that includes punctuation marks. A blank space between words doesn't count, but every character does.

Barbara VA (barbarava) Thank You, Sandy. I was trying to fit 2 series books in to get to 9, 10 & 11 for 25.1 (And The Story Continues), I'll just use 1 of them here

message 13: by B (new)

B (kristenlovesbooks) Found 2 good ones that fit!

Gunn's Golden Rules: Life's Little Lessons for Making It Work
(I'm using only "Gunn's Golden Rules" = 17 characters)

Deedee | 2345 comments What about the ": A Novel" part of titles? (Like Miss Garnet's Angel: A Novel ) Is it optional to include those 7 characters in the character count? So Miss Garnet's Angel: A Novel could be 17 characters or 24 characters? Thanks!

exactly! Since these are more words following a colon, they count as a subtitle, so you can use them or not as you like.

Melissa Wiebe (melissawiebe80) Can somebody suggest a title with 8 characters in it? I am going to be reading The Thorn for the first part of the challenge, but need another book. The only book that fits is a book in a series in which I haven't read the book before it.

ETA: found one; sry.

Kathy G. | 1931 comments I wanted to use Gathering Blue and .King of the Wind: The Story of the Godolphin Arabian. Are these two okay? King of the Wind does have some pictures, but I wouldn't call it a children's picture book. (Can I use the title part before the colon?) Thanks
