I have read a whopping six Caldecott Medals....I have more on hold at the library. My goal is to read all of them, eventually. I'm going to try and read all the Caldecott Honors as well, we shall see how this goes.

Susan (ladybug9678) | 1 comments Hmm I haven't read too many either, being in YA land. However, I am on the mock Caldecott committee at work this year as well as Capital Choices - 0 to 7 group (branching out), so I need to get in that mindset!

I love YA land...it's one of my favorite places, and sometimes it is hard branching out...hhahaah...I'm going to see how many I can read this summer before I become bogged down with college...

Luann (azbookgal) | 16 comments One of my projects this summer has been to read all of the Caldecott Medal books that I hadn't previously read. Just four more to go and I will have read them all! I'll start working on the Caldecott honor books as I get time.

Wow, you only have four left? Man, that's awesome.
Now I've read 22 Caldecott Medals....for the most part I'm interspersing them with the honors, depending on my mood. I am really glad though that my library carries All the Caldecott Medals, it makes life a lot easier.

message 6: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 16 comments Yes, it would be much easier! I've had to get quite a few of them through intralibrary loan. That's one reason I'm in a holding pattern with four left. My last four books are not at my local library, but at another library in another city within our system. I'll be in that town for a week at the end of the month, so I decided to wait and check them out while I'm there. My goal was to finish before the end of the summer.

It's been good in one way though. I wanted to take my time with it - read each book several times, peruse the pictures, etc. If they were all in one spot it would have been tempting to sit down and read them all very quickly all at once. Then I would have been able to say I've read them all, but I wouldn't remember most of them. This way I took my time, enjoyed the books, and wrote a short review for many of them.

I'm pretty much in love with my library. I don't know how I'd live without them.....I read so many books, I don't bother buying any because I go through them to fast, plus book are expensive.
I usually (well, lately, since I've started this Caldecott phase) put a bunch of Caldecott's on hold at the library and pick them up while we're running errands, we live out in the middle of nowhere. I put them in a pile and get comfortable, keeping my Macbook close by so that I can write a short review of the book when I am done. The really good books I can't stand to not read them to someone, then I have to find one of my family members and read them a picture book....they put up with me. I'm starting school in a few weeks and I know I will be super busy then, so I'm trying to get a decent amount of books read before then.

Christa (tritta) | 2 comments New to this group. I am glad I found others who like childrens books. I currently have read all but The Invention of Hugo Cabret. I did notice is has very beautiful pictures, so I am hoping to get the chance to read it soon.

message 9: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 16 comments Welcome, Christa! The Invention of Hugo Cabret is not your traditional picture book, but very very cool! The students at my school (grades 4-6) are fascinated with it. They love to carry around such a THICK book, but they also love the fact that it is mostly pictures and that they have to "read" the pictures to know the story. It is definitely deserving of its Caldecott.

Christa (tritta) | 2 comments Starting "reading" Hugo last night. It is very deserving of its award. The pictures are just awesome.

I really enjoyed the pictures in Hugo Cabret - they were super cool, and made the story so much more interesting. The illustrations fascinated me.

As an aside, I have finally finished reading ALL the Caldecott Medal winners....it only took me 5 months and multiple trips to the library, but I have read them all. Now I just need to work on finishing the Honors...unfortunately, my library doesn't own very many of the earliest Caldecott Honors.

Luann (azbookgal) | 16 comments Congrats, Snorkle! What a great accomplishment! Didn't it feel great when you crossed that last one off your list?

It felt so great, I didn't even notice! I had just gotten a nice little stack of Caldecott books from the library and didn't even realize that it contained my last Caldecott Medal book. It wasn't until I had returned them and was fiddling around on goodreads that I went, "I wonder how many more do I need to read?" and I checked my list and I had just read all of them. I am quite pleased though. Now all I have to do is keep up with them every year.

message 14: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (musshel) | 1 comments I've read 55 of them, and probably own about 40 of them.

Luann (azbookgal) | 16 comments Hi, Chandra. Hi, Shelly. :)

I love picture books, too! Some of my all-time favorite books are picture books. Although sometimes I feel a little guilty adding them to my shelves - like I've found an easy and quick way to bump up my numbers. But then I justify it by saying that I must read them for my job. Although I would probably read a certain amount of them anyhow. :) One of my favorite classes in library school was called "The Art of the Picture Book."

Personally, I had no qualms with adding picture books to goodreads. Haha!
They were such a vivid part of my childhood, and my mother loved books, so we had quite a collection. I think picture books instilled in me a love of reading and as I got older, I went on to harder and harder books. I don't think that it is possible to out-grow picture books. I am especially fond of Mo Willem's picture books.

I agree! Well put. One of these days I'm going to go crazy and add every picture book I've ever read to my list. :)

Haha, that's what I did. I joined goodreads and went crazy. I tried to add every book that I could remember that I had read, just because I thought it would be interesting to see how many it actually was. Also I thought it might be kind of cool to have a (if not somewhat reliable) record.

I am enjoying discovering many of the Caldecott books for the first time as I read them to my 6 year old daughter. I think I have read only read about 10 so far, but several are sitting on my shelf from the library.

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy (mary6543) | 5 comments We've done 42. I had no idea how many until I clicked them just today on the list you provided.

message 21: by Ronyell (new)

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) | 11 comments I have currently read 18 Caldecott Medals and 24 Caldecott Honors. So many more to go!!!

message 22: by evel (new)

evel | 1 comments Old thread, but hoping to revive it. I've read all of the Caldecott Medal winners with my daughter. We were able to aquire a poster with pictures of all the winners and had fun searching for each and writing the date as we read them. We've been reading all of the honor books since January 1, 2017 (about one a night) and we have currently read 160 honor books. I have about anothe 20 at our local libraries on hold and after that, I'm out of luck (I think there are about 250+ honor books) so I may have to buy some to complete the list.

message 23: by Linden (new)

Linden | 1 comments I have set a goal to read all the Caldecott Medal winners and honor books. So far I have read, starting with the current year going back, through 2012. Counting the ones I previously read, and will reread, I am at 62. I am sending this challenge to my friends.

message 24: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (caligirl9905) | 5 comments I have 33 winners and 42 honors.
