LOL Carmel, I just assumed you were talking about other people with that remark! I don't think anyone took it as anything other than fun.:DD

Mary Hi Carmel,

Please don't apologies. That is not how I interpreted it at all. One of my favourite kids books to read even to this day is "Green Eggs & Ham" by Dr Seuss (my sons favourite book) and "Harry the Dirty Dog"(my fav). You can't take the child out of the adult. He he!

message 453: by [deleted user] (new)

I have lots of those I can't part with too Carmel. :)

Andrew (hakanasa) Hi All,

My name is Andrew, I live in Melbourne and tend to read genre fiction, in particular sci-fi and fantasy. Occasionally I attempt literature, and sometimes even enjoy it.

I have a variety of interests, and am very on and off with reading: I won't touch a book for months and then suddenly I'll be reading every night.

Cheers,
Andrew

message 455: by Mary (new)

Mary Welcome Andrew.

message 456: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for covering for me Mary, you are doing a great job. :D

I second the welcome Andrew. Sci-fi, classics we have it all here.

Mary Hey Gail.

I make a great pavlova, family functions that is what I'm required to bring as a sweet. Does the pavlova princess mean you love eating them or your an expert at making them? I must say, I do like a good pav.

message 458: by [deleted user] (new)

Ha ha, it's the nickname Mandy gave me. You would have to ask her. :D

message 459: by Mary (new)

Mary I will presume that you are sweet like a pavlova.

Hi Mary, In answer to your question to Gail, when you become a moderator you get the chance to give yourself a nickname. Every now and then Gail or I make up new ones without telling eachother just for a laugh. I don't mind a good pavlova either but I can't cook them. In fact I was waiting for one of the Kiwis in the group to tell me that they invented the Pav!;)

message 463: by Lmg633 (new)

Lmg633 thanks for your welcome everyone.

I currently read "Possum Magic" to my little 10 month old and a hard cover "peek-a-boo" book. But I must say I have been buying up a storm with books that I can read to her or for her to read on her own. All the Roald Dahl books, Enid Blyton, childrens classics like treasure Island and all that stuff I read as a child! I so want to get into reading and the joys that it brings.

I don't know what genre I am into, I like various such as sci-fi, romance, crime, thrillers, drama, I pretty much read whatever's good.

I'm Ingrid and I live in Brisbane (born and raised!). For the past few years, the extent of what I've read were academic journals and textbooks (unfortunately, :(), but I'm slowly getting back into the kind of reading I enjoy. I also like to bake!

Hilde (hildesr) | 3 comments Hello everyone,
I'm not Australian, but I hope you'll let me play with you anyway. :) My name is Hilde, I'm 27 and I'm from Norway. I have loved Australia and anything Australian for almost twenty years (since they started showing A Country Practice over here, lol). I got back from a four-month stay in Sydney in January, and I also visited your lovely country back in 2001. It's not easy to find Aussie literature (or movies, for that matter) in Norway, but I love reading Australian books when I can get my hands on them. I recently read The Secret River by Kate Grenville, and I'm currently reading Bad Debts by Peter Temple.

Lisa Hi,

My husband was transferred to Perth last October for a 3 year assignment. I am always on the lookout for a good book and am interested in finding out about Australian writers. I have already read 5 Tim Winton books and enjoy his descriptions of WA and the people he writes about. I'm looking forward to discovering more Australian authors.

Joanne Valiukas (joannevaliukas) | 18 comments Well, as far as introductions go...here goes. I'm Joanne, a very proud Aussie girl from Melbourne. I am a wife, mother and domestic engineer (housewife) LOL. I read and read and read. What can I say? I love books. I even like bad books, sort of. Well, I'll read anything, mores the point. I keep all my books, even the ones I don't like, just to give it another chance one day. I've been known to read up to 3 or 4 novels in a day and I've always got a book on the go. I have a very wide variety of likes, as you'll see from my booklist.
I recently began writing myself, out of frustration. Last year, I began to get annoyed at anything and everything that I was reading and nothing was satisfying me. I got sick of feeling cheated by writers, where they wouldn't deal with the hard issues or where they ignored their own rules. Seriously though, I felt used and abused because I was buying, reading and loving these books and then boom...cheat or rules break...so not fair.
Told myself to suck it up and give it a go. Not fair to complain, if I wasn't willing to give it a go and well, so I did. I started writing and because I'm totally crazy and insane, I wrote for 99 days straight and came out with 5 books, but that's a whole other story.
I wanted to add my little bit to show the world that we Aussie girls have talent. Someone asked me how I would know that I have finally 'arrived' as a writer (even though I'm still a relative nobody, it was nice to dream about this answer) and I told her that when I got to go on Ellen Degeneres because I wanted to tell her how clever I thought she was for marrying an Aussie girl because we are FAB!

Alexander Vassilieff | 5 comments ODYSSEYA -- An Epic Journey: From Russia to Australia
My Name is Alexander Vassilieff and I am a descendent of the colonists who are personified in my first epic novel – a biography of my family. I was born in Shanghai, China and at the age of three during the closing days of World War II, we went to Harbin, recalling the horrors of that period - NKVD and the repatriation of over 10,000 Russians to GULAGS. At nine, in 1951, fatherless we arrived in Sydney, Australia. After an active career as a Professional Engineer and a long record of civic and community involvement, I retired and live with my wife Alexandra in Castle Hill. We have two children and four grandchildren. In Nov 2008 I was awarded as Laureate-grand-finalists in a Sydney Book Festival.

A captivating Read and what's it like to call Australia home.
Read it and be amazed how the research led the author from family stories to long ago records from, Russia, China and Australia media and book records to the KGB files.

Hi Sharon, or do I say Simi? I'm not sure about the protocols of these things. Being Joanne, I've learned over the years to answer to anything even vaguely like it, Jo, Jojo, Joey etc. LOL
Aside from doing crazy, insane things like this, I was able to write the way I did because of the support of my husband Mark and my children, a boy of 9 and a girl of 7.
Mark would come home, cook dinner, do the dishes (after feeding me), the washing, getting the kids through their routines and into bed. All I did was write.
My children were just as supportive. I would pick them up from school, throw some food at them and get back to writing. They were so supportive because of course they knew that anything Mummy would write, would be totally wonderful. LOL They were very patient with me and totally incredible. I did not even take breaks on the weekends but this is just the crazy sort of thing that I do.
For years I've tried to find the one thing that is me and finally...I have. I am a writer and I love it almost as much as reading because first and foremost, I will always be a reader.

I know what you mean Sharon, in the last few months, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan have kept me sane. If you love paranormal fantasy, you might like to try my book. I hate plugging it like this but I wrote it to share. I wrote it to fill the gaps of what I wasn't finding satisfying in other things. The first quarter is free for download off my website joannevaliukas.com It's about 100 pages and should give you some idea if it's your kind of paranormal. Try bad-boy vampire and fallen angel with lots of angst, tension and nail-biting stuff thrown in. LOL
I'd love to know what you think, even if it is just the taster.

Jo

Inter-library loans and modern technology are wonderful things, Alexander; on a Sunday night, I've just arranged for my local library to get a copy from waaaaaaaay over the other side of the city. I'll let you know what I think once I've given it a try - it sounds fascinating.
