message 452: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Hi Everyone,

I'm Laurel, just joined the other day and am looking forward to some good discussions and recommendations from this group. I'm a big fan of Poe and Lovecraft, also Bram Stoker, MR James (although haven't read anything of his for a while) and anything gothic and atmospheric. I like modern horror as well but am more drawn to the older stuff (or works in an older, gothic style).

Welcome, Laura!

I love a good old fashioned creepy, scary read. If you haven't read any MR James, I highly recommend it. You can get both of his seminal short story collections free on Amazon Kindle:

Actually Laura, if you are interested in James, the following e-book has ALL of his works and further scholarly writings by James. This was originally a hardback book published by Ash-Tree Press...

http://www.ash-tree.bc.ca/eBooks.htm

Its called A PLEASING TERROR by M.R. James

Nothing beats the actual hardback of this edition... but that is going for $400+ on the secondary market. Only $9.99 for the e-book.

I agree Laura. My favorite classics are almost always the horror ones!

message 465: by Carlos (new)

Carlos Plancarte (carlosplancarte) | 1 comments 1. Name or Screen Name: Carlos

2. Who are your favorite classic horror writers?
Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Stoker and Matheson

3. Why do you like classic horror?
When I was a small kid (probably 4-5 years old) my dad used to tell me stories of Poe, Stoker and Doyle. He loves books and he did whatever he could to teach me that kind of love, respect and fascination! Same as my grandfather did! Maybe is a genetic condition!? Actually, the very first book I ever read in my life was a 1945 Spanish version of the Tales of Mystery & Imagination of Poe that belonged to my grandfather. I still have that book as one of my precious treasures!

4. Anything else you'd like us to know about you?
I live in NYC, but I am from Mexico City. I am big fan of horror movies and books. I love to read about supernatural things, old folklore or vampires. In Mexico everybody knows a ghost story or knows someone that have some experience on that! I know it's kind of crazy but reading horror books reminds me of my childhood and teenage years, and makes me feel back home....?

Welcome, Carlos. That's not crazy at all. I like the thrill of a good scare, and part of that is nostalgia from watching classic horror movies on Saturday afternoons or reading scary books from the library.

Welcome Shannon!

To all the new members, feel free to check out our Tales to Chill Your Blood Halloween group series. We are selected online classic stories to read in October. Any member is welcome to make a suggestion:

Andrew 1. Andrew
2. The usual suspects ... Poe, Lovecraft, Shelley, Stoker. There's a reason everyone likes them.
3. The focus is on plot, character, and especially atmosphere. So much modern stuff is all about titillating, shocking, disturbing, or grossing out the reader.
4. Oh, I'll think of something.

message 481: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) 1. Call me Holly

2. Favorite classics would include the ghost stories of Henry James, M. R. James, Edith Wharton, Wilkie Collins. Also a huge fan of Arthur Machen.

3. I like classic horror because I love the feeling of being creeped out. I have read stuff like "The Girl Next Door", but it didn't scare me, it just disgusted me. Disgust is not a good feeling.....if I liked being disgusted I would still watch the news. I seek that adrenaline rush you get when you hear a strange noise late at night when you are alone in the house.

Welcome, Holly. I agree with you about not enjoying being disgusted by a book. There's a huge difference in being unnerved or scared and being repulsed or disturbed. Love the former, not the latter.

message 485: by Paul (new)

Paul Roberts Hi. My name is Paul Roberts
Some of my favourite classic horror writers are: Blackwood, Machen, Hope Hodgson, Lovecraft, and Poe.
I love classic horror as it is the platform for all modern ideas. Classic stories have a tendency to explore setting and mood in masterful strokes.
I work in the horror film community in Toronto, and have published two horror novelettes on the Kindle.
Good to be here!

Brenda Bauer (lisa_dee) | 2 comments 1. Lisa Dee
2. There are so many to choose from: Stoker, Poe, Shelley, Jackson, M.R. James, E.F. Benson, Lovecraft
3. Well, there's nothing wrong with modern horror - but to properly appreciate/understand the genre, you must have a grounding in the classics since they influence the modern writers so much
4. My fav film when I was a small child was The Haunting. I got soooo excited when it was going to be on. I had no idea of what the word Gothic meant, but clearly I had a natural taste for atmospheric Gothic ghost stories. While I dabbled in SF as a teen (and I still enjoy it), the horror genre seems to express something so basic and primal about human psychology and spirituality. I love it so much, I even write it. My preference is for the short story (which is why I love James and Benson) and that's what I write!

2. Lovecraft, Dickenson (Emily and Charles), Agatha Christy, Henry James.
3. I enjoy the suspense that can be found in the Classics. New books are good, but the dressed down terror to be found in the prose of authors long past is incomparable.
