I'm a AB girl: Androse Bierce/Algernon Blackwood, with a lot of Arthur Machen, MR James, Hoffman and Kafka mixed in.
I bleed Poe, don't cut me though, I like to keep his essence trapped in my blood stream.
I'm an aspiring writer of literary horror currently working on my second novel. Look forward to the discussions.

Welcome, Lightfoot. We're glad to have you. I like all of those mentioned, although I haven't read Kafka yet. Plan to, though.

2. HPL, M.R. James, Poe, Dickens
3. Better editorial standards, for a start, and usually better structured stories.
4. Exiled Yorkshireman. Just released my first Lovecraft Mythos novella for e-readers on Amazon / Smashwords.
Welcome, Phil! Agreed on the editorial standards, for sure! Feel free to revive any older topics or create your own. We could always use suggestions for our short story reads, too.

2. Its easier for me to say what I don't like than to put together a list of all the authors that I read. I don't like vampires that sparkle! There, I said it! Also, not a real big fan of Anne Rice, though I've read several of her novels. I can't get my head around all of the homo-eroticism in her books. There, said it again. I like my horror figures dark and scary, not cuddly lovers.
3. I grew up watching classic horror flicks on late-night KDOG channel 26 in Houston, TX. I guess the genre has become "comfort food" for my mind.
4. Feel free to friend me. I've been doing Goodreads for a couple of years and never done the group thing and never added friends.

I love classic horror and 18th/19th century gothic. Welcome.

That's is a tough one. I think it's probably The Dunwich Horror. I just ..."
I'll always love The Rats in the Walls. Not exactly the cosmic horror for which Lovecraft is known, but brilliant.

Aaron, The Rats in the Wall is another favorite of mine. It is indeed brilliant!
Rats in the Wall is mega-creepy. That and Pickman's Model, Beyond the Wall of Sleep, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, and The Dunwhich Horror are stories I prefer by HPL.
My HPL favorites vary depending on which ones I've reread lately. The stories I was blown away by most when I first read them were The Shadow Out of Time, Dreams in the Witch House, Rats in the Walls, and From Beyond.

Hi, Lisa. I'm glad you joined.
Here are some woman writer suggestions that have a good amount of gothic/horror:
Mary Elizabeth Braddon
Vernon Lee
Marjorie Bowen
May Sinclair
The Ghost-Feeler: Stories of Terror and the Supernatural is a volume of ghost stories by Edith Warton
Gothic Tales is a collection by Elizabeth Gaskell

I also live in a small mountain community in the Rockies. Why does it influence your choices?

Hi Lisa
This is a good introduction to Victorian/Edwardian women writers of ghostly fiction:

1. Bazzie1967
2. Oscar Wilde;H.P.Lovecraft;Robert Louis Stevenson;Mary Shelley; Henry James
3. Classic Horror is so different than modern horror. I've yet to read a modern horror book that genuinely frightens
4. I'm from the UK and work as a Healthcare Library Manager
To any new members, take a chance to go to our Tales to Chill Your Blood Halloween 2011 Edition folder and make a suggestion for an online short story for us to read in the month of October. We want to keep the mood spooky around this group next month!

1> I'm Jo
2> I don't really have favorite writers so much as I have favorite books/short stories. (ie All Souls by Edith Wharton & The Haunting Of Hill House by Shirley Jackson but I wouldn't consider them favorite authors).
3> Despite being a horror movie fan, I like classic horror because I'm not a fan of gore (especially over the top gore) and I like a good suspenseful tale that gets your mind going!
4> "In a nutshell:" I'm a constipated writer, joyful gardener, avid reader and photo taker. Eclectic, creative & happily married 30 something who happens to be disabled with Seronegative Arthritis and Fibromyalgia.
Welcome, Jo! I think I am a bit constipated as a writer myself. I have a lot of stories stopped up inside me somewhere.

Welcome Jo and Bazzie! Feel free to start discussions or nominate short stories for group reads!

2. Sheridan Le Fanu, Lovecraft, Poe - lots of others.
3. "Carmilla" imho is one of the best vampiric stories ever written. An absolute must-read along with "Green Tea" also by Le Fanu. The mention of the word "Twilight" makes me cringe - I was convinced by a book shop owner, and the nice cover, to buy it new. It was absolute bollocks. Read about 10 pages and threw it in a corner. Among the new vampiric books "Let the Right One In" is excellent. Scan author - Lindqvuist or something like that. You know the one.
Age: I woke up in a pyramid this morning ;)

Right now I am reading Uncle Silasand The After House I used to like reading horror, But not the new stuff so I am hoping this will help.
