40 is horrible, it's been that here today, and will be again tomorrow. Saw Bendigo was 40, and heading over on the 'fly over' weather map, a place in SA called Ceduna is going to be 45 tomorrow!!!!!!! There will be no relief for the rest of the week apparently! So yes Carmel, reading in the air con will be WONDERFUL for you! You have earned it with all your hours you've put in! :)

Laura, you are so talented with your drawing, you should be doing that full time...you would make a lot of money selling them! :)

message 1203: by Neko (new)

Neko Oh my word 45!! How can anyone survive in weather like that :x I remember once when I was up in QLD and it got to 45 and we had no aircon!!! Just light fans in the roof which did nothing :( Was staying at a friends house as well but lived at the mall during the day time.

Haha, I wish I could sell my drawings but I wouldn't know the first place to start when it comes to that type of stuff.

Aw that sucks :( Im sorry to hear that.
I haven't been like that with anyone. Yet :S

And it was BURNING hot today. Its felt like it was almost 50 here in Adelaide :O
Awful awful awful.
Spent hours in the pool tonight, which was 8 degrees warmer then usual...

@ Laura..that would have been so horrible without air con! Don't know how people cope with only fans, all they do is circulate hot air! Maybe someone on here would have some ideas for you re selling your drawings...it's worth checking out, anyway! Good luck..:)

@ Carmel..Hope you can catch up with your friend, would be lovely to just chat over a cuppa, or an ice cold drink!! Enjoy!! :)

@ Jessica...we are leaving for Adelaide tomorrow, and are wondering at our logic travelling in this heat!! Of course we didn't know it would be like this when we booked everything...We spoke to our relative who we are going to stay with last night, and he confirmed how terrible the weather is..:(

message 1206: by Neko (last edited Jan 31, 2011 04:59PM) (new)

Neko @Brenda- Yea, that's a thought! And have a safe and great holiday as well.

-

I hate pushy people! That stupid employment woman is exactly this. And is making me go to an 'optional' meeting to 'inspire' others to write good cover letters..What a load of horse poop! She just wants me to go because that's how she is, pushy!

I will go to this one meeting then state it's unneeded and everyone else there is happy with how I write applications letters and such. But you know, I bet she will be pushy then as well. Worst is I end up complaining about her to someone above her because believe me I'm tired of being treated like crud or non believed in which she does. I hate getting tough or mean but sometimes it can be the only way *sigh*

/rant over!

Thanks Carmel and Laura for the travel wishes! It's horrible here, almost 40 at the moment, and blowing a gale...terrible bush fire weather. I hope it settles for tomorrow...:(

message 1210: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Thanks all for the words of support re my heart broken daughter. I know it takes time, and that she will recover and join the rest of the human race who have gone through similar times. It sad to see her so blue. But she's up and out doing bits today - where there's life there's hope!
Carmel - your poor daughter finding out about the new relationship via Facebook. I think that's one of the hardest things about breaking up is when the other person finds someone new - then it really is over.
And while it is tempting to dull the pain it is going to hit you at some stage so you're right Laura, it cant be done. Better to get through it, deal with it than let it come back at you in the future.

Hot weather? Yeah, we've got some here in Adelaide this week. Good for catching up on the reading, not good for most other things. Went for a walk last night about 9pm, still so hot and revolting the whole walk was like going out in the middle of the day. Even the dogs seemed glad to get home. No sea breeze, nothing but still hot air.

But tonight I don't mind how hot it gets cos I'm off to see Sufjan Stevens. Yeah for me! But then back at work for another run of nights, boo.

Neko Wow all this heat :/ Today we had a thunder storm which lasted a while and now it's been raining pretty much the whole day.

I hate heat because usually when it gets hot here it can be very unexpected. We don't have aircon here just the cheap fans soo they don't always do a good job when it's in the 30's.

Neko Yea Yasi looks nasty :x Again, i hope everyone who is effected or possibly could be effected by this will be safe!!

It's cold here 12C...brrr...Time to sleep.

@Brenda- Oohhh my..I hope it does settle down for you before you depart on your break away (don't miss GR too much..haha) :p

I was born in Ceduna and lived there until I was 12yo: My mum's family have been Cedunians for generations. It's not uncommon for the temperature to reach 40+ during summer, but the great thing about Ceduna is that it is right on the Great Australian Bight, so when the wind swings around there is a splendid, cooling sea breeze.

I now live in the Flinders Ranges: On the 25 Jan it reached a staggering 48*C, the hottest day since records began. Australia Day was not much better at 45*C, and since then almost every day has been 40+ (today it is expected to reach 42*C). It gets rather tiring!

However, we are expecting a cool change sometime later in the week, which will hopefully bring with it a good drenching of rain as it has been very, very dry here for nearly 2 months now and the landscape is looking extremely parched.

Jan (auntyjan) My advice to anyone in the Cairns to Innisfail region, would be to pack some clothes food and bottled water in the car, along with a USB stick with favourite photos, lock up and head as far south as you can get. This is not the time to 'wait and see'. This looks like being the worst cyclone we've ever seen. Go stay with someone on the 'sunshine' coast, or preferably further south...NSW. Even if your house is not de-roofed, power will be out. Go now, not in 2 hours time.

Adele (mooturtil) | 169 comments I'm really worried. my mum grew up in cairns(and is currently up assisting my grandparents), and my grandparents and some family live there still.

Last i heard everything is ok.however they haven't been ordered to evacuate.
thankfully my grandmother does not live in a low lying area(which is what they were evacuating yesterday, and maybe why they havn't been told to evacuate). Yasi is due at approximately 10pm tonight.

I unfortunately predicted(to my friend on saturday) that Yasi will be worse than Cyclone Tracy...and according to reports i'm right...but there is still time for me to be wrong :o(

message 1220: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) Sometimes cyclones weaken when they hit the coast, so the people closest to the coast, especially in low-lying areas, can experience storm surges, which apparently are more dangerous than roofs being torn off. However, this thing is so enormous that it's likely to cause a lot of damage. I can't understand why they didn't evacuate everyone. You can't decide this three hours before it hits. Leaving yesterday would have been best. Doesn't matter if they head for Mt Isa or Brisbane, soon it will be too late to leave. Then it will be a matter of filling water bottles (water and power supplies might be out of action for days), and during the storm sheltering in the room with the least glass, usually bathroom, with raincoats, phones, torches, drinks and snacks. Once it starts, everybody must shelter where they can and not drive, because there will be metal and glass, sheds and corrugated iron blowing about. What's more it will be impossible to see where you are going. Let's hope we are all wrong, Adele, but I would be getting as far south or inland as possible, before it's too late. Nobody should worry about losing face by being overcautious. If it fizzles out(unlikely) or reduces in intensity (quite possible), you just come back. But if you wait and see, and it's worse than cyclone Tracy, everyone will have to be evacuated because of disease risk anyway, so better to get out now. After cyclone Tracy, people were evacuated to Perth and other cities until water and power were restored.

On Wed.05th Jan just as the Sydney heat was getting in to its stride, my home air con system died. Called for service who said they could not come to my area before Tuesday (11th Jan.) Tech guy rings and we discuss what is wrong (I have no idea, if I had I wouldn't need him), but he decides it is a control panel. He has to order one, which will take four days and he can't replace the old one until Tuesday (what is it with Tuesday for some suppliers?).

He arrives and changes control 'thingy' and the system is switched on, but doesn't work! He then checks the fuse, which was in the off position (clipsol safety). So he switches this on and plays with the remote and all things are OK - but are they?

We don't require the air con until Thursday 13th Jan. Doesn't work! Clipsol has switched off again - this doesn't take a genious to work out that there is a line fault. . . Ring for service, and was told that it will be Tuesday (I hate Tuesdays).

Wait in for him to come until 2.00 pm so ring to see where he is - he stated that he called me at 12.30 pm, did not receive an answer, so did not come to my house. (I never went out, even to the garden, in case I missed his call)I did ask why he didn't leave a message on the message bank but . . .when can he come again? Not until next Tuesday!

The daily temperature outside is now pushing 40 and my temperature is well over 100.
Had one of the granddaughters with us but even with fans it is still too hot, so called another air con service.
He came Friday & within a few minutes found that the compressor & capacitor (what ever they are) had blown and that it would cost around $1000 to fix the problem (his later quote was for $1,350).
Spent the day researching for a new air con system (the dead one was only 6.5 years old) Did you know that people don't expect them to last longer than 6 to 8 years & they cost HEAPS!

Now have a quote for $2600 to have the old one taken out and a new one put in,and they can not use any of the system already in place (pipes etc) as it is now illegal! Wrong type of gas or something - house is red hot, 37c (in the shade)at the moment and I am dripping over the keyboard.
Being an ex POM, I have had my whinge for the day :-o)

But my new computer (received on Monday) and my old printer are incompatible . . I can feel another fight coming on . . .

Oh No!! How frustrating Geoff. Tuesdays suck!! I can't live without aircon but they cost a fortune don't they. I would do the same as you and just buy a new one not repair the old one. Built-in obsolescence seems to be a feature of modern electronic goods. How can a printer and computer be incompatible?? I thought it was just a matter of a USB connection.:/

Printers are REALLY fussy. Same with scanners. And usually (not always) the older these items are the more likely hood they won't work with newer technology.
It's really annoying :( Also it can be cheaper to buy a new printer everytime you run out of ink because the cartridges cost more! :/

@ Carmel...wow, those crickets are amazing! We had dead crickets when we were in Wagga on Wed night, the owner said he couldn't work out where they were coming from..
Bad storm that night, with light localised flooding. Then lightning at Mildura this morning, and came through a storm in Renmark on the way to Adelaide. So looking at your radar picture, it shows it right across that area. I'm pretty sure we were very lucky to get through without any problems. I do so hope you are ok...

message 1249: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Woodland | 313 comments Morning all,
Back on line after a very frustrating week with not just the air con system – ordered a new Fujitsu 7.1 kw supposed to be fitted yesterday (Friday), but the service guy rings to ask if he can come Saturday afternoon – OK, but we have to leave no later than 5.00 pm for a picnic with about 50 others from our local church. Not a problem he says – we’ll do the inside bit first and the outside bit later, and if you have to leave we’ll shut the gates as we depart – so we will see. At a forecast of 40 c today I wouldn’t be surprised if he put the whole thing off until Monday – wouldn’t blame him really.

After a couple of days installing and uninstalling the operating system for the printer – which is a 2006 printer, Win 7 didn’t like the ‘driver’.
Downloaded a new driver, but couldn't figure out how to put it in to the system (it didn’t have an exec file) – on Wednesday, eureka!– worked it out and all is well.
Now for the scanner – according to all the forums I have read the HP 3500 c scanner is not compatible with Win 7 – this I can believe after trying to prove them wrong, but eventually got it working through Windows Live Photo System (comes with Win 7). As an ongoing solution I am not sure, but as I don’t use the scanner as much as I used to, I’ll suck it and see.

Finally, on Thursday, received an invoice from the first air con service company for nearly $200. Not a happy chappy, so fired off an e-mail and have had the bill knocked down to $95. After I receive the new invoice, and I have paid the $95 (it is worth $95 to get rid of the Tuesday man )if anyone wants to know who not to use for air con servicing, ask me and I’ll tell you with pleasure.
In the mean time the only consolation I have is that the lack of air con usage for the last four and a bit weeks will have saved me heaps of money.

Considering what Queensland has had to suffer in January & earlier this week, my small problem doesn’t rate – but banging this out has lowered my personal temperature. :-o)

message 1250: by Mandapanda (new)
