Neko My Mum watched the Japanese news this morning, she said she was horrified with what she saw :(

@Cheryl- No worries :) It's meant to be very good. It's annoyingly banned in Australia..grrr!

Yeah...I just read a horrible report a few minutes ago about nuclear plant in Japan.

It seems just dumb to have one there...

You're definitely right there Carmel!! There are obviously reasons, and they are mostly prepared for earthquakes, but this one, with the resulting tsunami, defied belief.

They have also just announced an American person has been killed by the tsunami wave which hit the coast of the USA!

Neko Japan has actually shifted...Coast of Japan moved about 8 feet!! What is that going to do to the rest of the world?

Neko "(CNN) -- The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis."

Wow...I mean no words can really discribe it...but bloody hell.

message 1608: by Neko (new)

Neko Yes, this problem with the nuclear plant scares me quite a bit. Cause particals can travel through the air and such...Not to mention what type of problems it will bring to Japan as a whole.

message 1609: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 87 comments we should be ok from any radiation fall out as the air doesn't move easily from northern hemisphere to southern. But is still serious - but for the poor Japanese people who live in the area rather than the world as a whole. I understand everyone has been evacuated within a 20 km vicinity anyway.

They are expecting more tsunami's though they are on alert right now. i have heard from my online booky friends from Japan and they are all ok - just badly shaken

message 1610: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) Haven't dropped in for a while. Hi to everyone. Big hugs for Tracey, keep us posted with your progress.
This tsunami makes you realise that earthquakes are not the biggest problem, the tsunami is even worse. One town of 17 thousand people has ten thousand missing. This is very difficult for our brains to comprehend.
These things make you realise that life is too short to waste it getting angry over little things. Make sure all the important people know how much you love them, and be thankful for every day you have. It is a gift.

Oh, that is so good Laura..there are sooo many still missing, it's horrific!

message 1621: by Neko (new)

Neko Yes :( If you use the google search that they set up to find people..it's rather sad when you find someone has passed away :( Then people go and spam it with crap which makes me mad.

message 1622: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda Carmel wrote: "Yeah it's tragic, the power of the Earth is unquestionable!.."

I was just listening to a reporter who was broadcasting from a (formerly modern) Japanese coastal town of 17,000 people, most of whom are missing. He said the town looked flattened and the silence was eerie. Then he said, "The empires of men, upturned in moments". I thought that was very true and eloquently said.

They are interviewing some of the people who survived but live close to the damaged nuclear reactors. When they ask these people if they are trying to leave the area, they say no we are with our family, that's all that matters. We don't care if we die here. Just makes me cry. They seem so shellshocked. I want to send a plane over there and bring them all to Australia.

Our 31st wedding anniversary today...we went to the movies and saw The King's Speech'...excellent movie. Colin Firth played the part magnificantly. Geoffrey Rush should have received an award for his amazing performance, and Churchill, and many others were fabulous!

Then we had lunch out, and concluded with coffee (at a different place). And tonight I'll enjoy Markus Zusak while hubby sleeps..lol

message 1628: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Thanks all for the kind thoughts but I have to admit that seeing the world news lately makes my troubles look so petty. I lived in Christchurch for a while and have a cousin in Japan so seeing the devastation was just heartbreaking. As an historian though I have to say that the world has seen these kinds of disasters before and it usually leads to enormous changes politically, socially etc etc. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.

Im yet to see The Kings Speech, but ive seen 'The Social Network' and 'Inception' , which are some of the other 'big movies' of 2010, and loved them both. If 'Kings Speech' beat them for best picture, it must be amazing :D

Speaking of which, has anyone seen 'Black Swan'?
What did they think. I am desperate to see it on DVD...

Came home to the kitchen a mess...Sister didn't empty the dishwasher before going to work as per usual or even find time to do it last time (she had time to). GAH! It looks like someone hit the kitchen with a storm.
