It was awful to hear that two of the dead were his brothers. His poor family must be really suffering. I can't imagine what it's like to be the parents of a child who did something like this as well as losing two of your other children.

Very cute Carolyn. Happy Australia Day all. Hope all those in drought areas are getting the rain we are having for Australia Day.

Lesley Moseley | 36 comments Happy Australia Day. We are drought declared, but this past week have had some lovely rain. Downside is losing power for 21 hours, finding leads to hook up to someones' genny to at least keep the fridge going. Prior to the rain it was a hot windy day. 39 degrees. I live in Greenvale, 245 klms west of Townsville.
Our golf/country club are having a 'do', so that will be fun.

message 25557: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6890 comments Sorry to hear about the loss of power but glad you have had some rain, Lesley. A gentle steady rain would be good for you I'm thinking. Enjoy your 'do' at the golf club today.

I haven't been to Cabarita Beach, but stayed at Salt Village (just a little north of Cabarita) about 3 months ago and it was a gorgeous area.

If you don't already have plans for things to do and you get sick of lying on the beach/by the pool, I can recommend the Tweed Regional Art Gallery and Margaret Olley Centre in Murwillumbah, Flutterbies Cottage Cafe in Tyalgum (other side of Murwillumbah), and Tropical Fruit World is an interesting day out (costs about $40 to enter, but that includes a tractor tour of the plantation and fruit tasting, amongst other things). I can highly recommend the Tweed Endeavour Cruises along the Tweed River to Tumbulgum - I did the lunch cruise and it was fantastic. You could also climb Mt Warning, but I wouldn't advise it - it almost killed me when I did it about 15 years ago!!

Hope you have a wonderful time, whatever you do (or don't do!).

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Our Australia Day here was tainted by huge amount of smoke from the Tassie bushfires which southerlies had blown across Bass Strait. Was just too thick down here on SW coast so we had to stay indoors all day.

The smoke must be terrible in Tassie itself.

message 25583: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80013 comments Mod
That's bad luck Bette. Hope you managed some reading :) Nice to see you back too..I have been wondering if you'd gone away :)

message 25584: by Neko (new)

Neko The smoke has been pretty shocking during last week but for us it's gotten somewhat better this week and we don't even have the fires down this way.

Trying to wake up...had to go out 5am for toileting but the reason i tell this was as i woke up there was a massive huntsman on the wall...Named it Hillary or Harry depending if it's male or female...blegh

Looks like we might get a storm...would be cool but doubt the pup would agree.

It sure has been Bette. But the last couple of days havent been as bad, obviously the wind has blown it all your way. I was excited yesterday as it was finally clear enough to hang washing on the line outside for a while. (small things lol).
Believe it or not we even had a new fire start yesterday near the town of Perth (yes we have one in Tassie too) which is about 15k's or so from where I live, that got out of control for a while to the point where an evacuation centre was set up in a neighbouring town (thankfully now under control) that was started by someone using machinery they shouldn't have been when it was Total Fire Ban.
Tasmanian Police have charged a 62-year-old Perth man with using machinery in contravention of a total fire ban over the blaze.
Why do some people think the rules don't apply to them????

It sounds pretty bad down there Zoey. I just saw there are 50 fires currently burning in Tassie! One which is out of control at Nelson Bay, which is only an hour's drive from here;) Take care down south!

Good question Zoey. Wondering the same after watching several drivers ignore arrows in car parks and go the wrong way.
Stay safe all near fires. Thinking of you.

Not just children - a friend of mine in eastern Victoria had a problem with her ducks - they had only swum in a small plastic bowl - when the got a small downpour and the damn filled to the half way point they took the ducks down for a treat. they were scared of the huge (for them) mass of water!!!

They follow her hubby every where so he stripped to his undies and went into the water so the ducks would follow him in!!!

Need to pick your collective brains here - do I claim for blood test costs on Medicare or my Medibank Private Insurance? My dermatologist recently sent me for a vast array of blood tests and I'm expecting a huge bill:(
