I apologize about not having a question about The Year of the Flood although we just reads Oryx and Crake for my book club last week and one friend had just read Year of the Flood and wholly recommended it. My question is actually about one of your short stories. My son is a freshman in college and was just assigned The Scarlet Ibis to read. His teacher loves and admires all your work and must be very good at selling your stories to really interest my teenage son to come home and grab the Handmaid's Tale from my bookshelves. (although he was raised to be a reader he is still a teen boy with all the normal teen boy interests!)
His class was discussing the symbolism of the title and the birds and were unable to come up with any consensus as to the meaning. When I told him about this forum he was eager for me to write and see if you would answer any thoughts you would share about that story and its meaning and symbolism.
