I can't remember who the cook was who did mine. I once did a story on the city and a terrific cook gave people lessons in traditional cooking. I can't find the pictures anymore. Just remember it was next to the waterside and that in the same building they sold these traditional pralines (I know they sell them everywhere)
I will recognize him when I get back - of that I'm sure.

Whenever I am in the Crescent City I *always* drop by Mr. B's Bistro for gumbo ya-ya. The recipe can be had here, but I think it tastes better when you are sitting at the bar chatting up the bartender and watching all the tourists stroll by on Royal Street.

The Mr. B's Bistro Cookbook Simply Legendary Recipes From New Orleans's Favorite French Quarter Restaurant by Cindy Brennan by Cindy Brennan

The small spots are no less worthy than the more known establishments. Eating in New Orleans is sort of like eating in Italy. No matter where you are the food is almost always first rate, and avoiding the marginal is a much shorter list.

You kids have been busy on this thread today, I love it! I'll have to check out some of the music that I am not familiar with when I have a little more time.

I made pictures of the famous places but also of and with the newcomers' Chefs and the traditional ones up to all kinds of praline ladies and a Chinese granny inside the market selling mangoes (my favorite fruit). Although it was primarily about the food I also got to visit several Jazz clubs and the surrounding areas. It was a great trip.

Yes, I believe you are referring to the French Market that runs along the Mississippi River in the French Quarter. There is a famous spot there where you can watch ladies in uniform making pralines. I love that place. It is impossible to visit New Orleans without getting great food and listening to great music. It's the one city where I think the street musicians outshine most club musicians in other cities (Sorry Bentley, that includes NYC.)

I think you are right Alisa - New York City has become so big that the intimacy of a place like New Orleans has been lost forever.

I loved the place (New Orleans) and want to go back; great food, great people, great history, and above all - terrific music and atmosphere (especially the French Quarter). I also liked Louisiana.

New York City is vibrant, high energy, great neigborhoods but not intimate.

I also visited a kind of pralines "factory" somewhere in the French Quarter. It was funny for me, being from around where they make the traditional Belgian pralines (invented by Jean Neuhaus Jr.)
I loved most of the food (although sometimes a little too buttery/heavy for my taste) the hotter, the better, but the pralines were too sweet. There I definitely prefer the Belgian way.

The Chinese woman was on the French Market

Alisa (mstaz) TO be sure Bentley, very different cities and I love them both for different reasons, which you so aptly noted. I spent a fair amount of time in Louisiana for work several years ago (early 1990's), and a little bit of time in Mississippi although not nearly as much. I would say I got to know it and the people and history well but discovered that the more I spent time there the less I knew, perhaps because of its incredibly deep and varied background. I will at least admit to having an affinity for the place and learned a few things. It still holds a special place in my heart, and I will never tire of traveling there or learning more about it. And the food and music is hard to beat!

Marjorie Martin I recently watched on Ted Turner's TV movie chanel a fantastic 2010 documentary film, "Dave Brubeck in His Own Sweet Way." Produced by jazz-lover, Clint Eastwood and available at Netflix. The film chronicles Brubeck's life, career and music. Highlights include revealing interviews with Yo-Yo Ma, Sting and others plus a never-before-aired interview Brubeck filmed with Walter Cronkite.
(As far as I know, Brubeck is still alive at age 90)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Give a listen to the wonderful Django Reinhardt, the early jazz guitarist. An icon in France, he did not have much luck in the USA. He founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France and was a presence in the years when the American ex-pats were holding court in Paris. I first learned of him when reading about the life of another French icon of music, the incomparable American-born Josephine Baker. He was a Romani gypsy and his music has some of that flavor.

Sure. My Dad had quite a collection of his records. It's terrific playing - just not my favorite style. I prefer the more laid-back things on semi acoustic guitars.

As far as I know Django's son has been trying to make a movie about his Dad, here in Europe. But I don't have any details on the recent progress...

message 147: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) The film sounds interesting but will never see the light of day here in the States. It appears that people just don't know who he was. I only do because I have an interest in the Paris of the 1920-30s.....a fascinating period. I must agree that his style is not my favorite either but as a man and a pioneer he is an interesting figure in the world of music.
