Emily Haven't read it since I was a kid, so I can't say for sure how much local color it actually has, but how about Madeline in London?

Amy (mary6543) | 341 comments The same thing happened to me! My mom went to England, and I said, "Could you get me "A Bear Called Paddington?" She said, "You want a stuffed animal?" I said, "No, that's the name of the book."

Anyway, she brought me back the updated picture book. But it all worked out VERY well, because I since discovered our library here has the chapter book! Plus, the picture book is very cute!

I've also read "London Bridge is Falling Down" by Peter Speir (sp?) although I must say ds wasn't really into it.

Amy (mary6543) | 341 comments Another possibility is "This is London" from the "This is..." series by M. Sasek. (Miroslav Sasek) Also, I think there is "This is Britain" in the series?

LOVE this thread, Chandra! (Obviously!) I will see what I can come up with. There are so many great suggestions already :-)

Janice Durante | 27 comments Barbara McClintock wrote and illustrated a charming picture book based on a Dickens story. See if you can get a copy of Molly and the Magic Wishbone

Chandra--Not exactly what you're asking for, but I across this, which looks neat:
http://www.booksforkeeps.co.uk/

"Books for Keeps is the UK’s leading, independent children’s book magazine. It was launched in 1980 and ever since has been reviewing hundreds of new children’s books each year and publishing articles on every aspect of writing for children. There are over 12,500 reviews on our new website and more than 2,000 articles including interviews with the top children’s authors and illustrators.

"'The best scholars, reviewers, authors and critics write for Books for Keeps,' says editor Rosemary Stones, 'We hold a mirror up to the children’s book world and reflects back its output, issues and preoccupations with intelligence, scholarship and wit.''

Brenda | 192 comments Thanks BunWat, I need to do a lot more exploring. As soon as I clicked on the site my son's eyes got big, he loves pop-up cards and there were some really neat ones. It is going to be fun.

A few more London-based picture books--haven't read them myself, though:

The Story of London

Tino Turtle Travels to London, England

And this one is a chapter book but with pictures and for young audiences:
The Elephants Visit London

The Boy, the Bear, the Baron, the Bard and Midsummer Knight are both wordless picture books with a nod to Shakespeare.
