Sarah | 13814 comments At least we know some good work will be done while you're in Haiti. Did you read that ALL of the US government aid is still tied up in red tape?

message 52: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i have heard that. so much bureaucracy in helping people it seems. much has to do with people thinking "what's in it for me?" whether that be in monetary form or just needed kudos that may help them climb whatever ladder they are trying to climb.

we have zero admin costs on the projects we do. we personally pay for our own travel expenses and raise money for projects that goes 100% to the projects. one of the main things we are doing now is to pay local people to help with the project so they have some ownership of it. we are working on a sustainable farm initiative currently. for $200 i can hire 65 people for a day. i have raised an additional $1000 (aside from the $10k for the project material costs for this trip) that will provide work for 65 people for a week. i have found that this works better than just giving them a bag of rice. (which can turn people into pavlov's dog just waiting for a bell to ring and be fed) this also puts that $1000 back into their local economy. as for anyone that thinks i am hiring cheap slave labor, this is the avg going wage in this area for a days work (about $3.07) and i can really spread it around. plus this project is in their community solely for them.

Have a great time, sir. If you're playing baseball this time, and someone brushes you back, rush the mound.

message 58: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I'm proud to know you, Kevin.

Don't forget to leave the fruit hat at home, though. I don't think it'll get through customs.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Kevin, you are awesome. And I know you'll be a great moderator. Don't be afraid to use the power of the ficus!

Kevin, I don't care what everyone else says about you. You're alright.

Seriously though, when we finally legalize cloning, I'm thinking we should take a few tissue samples off you first.

I know, but I shudder to imagine what things will be like once they're teenagers.

message 79: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Sometimes they have most of it out of their systems by the time they are teenagers. One can hope.

message 80: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Did you play soccer, Kevin? Any yellow cards?

message 81: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments great soccer moment in Haiti:

i took soccer balls and played in the street with the boys several times. one evening we had a goal set up between two trees and then lined up in the street and tried to kick penalty goals while taking turns being goalie. the boys were loving it. i then started taking the ball and handing it to men who were walking past on the busy street. men of all ages from mid-twenties to 70+. when i handed them the ball and the boys all started hooting they all got a familiar twinkle in their eyes as if they were remembering being boys and playing soccer in the street. every one that i handed the ball to took a shot. all still had the skills. you can't imagine the smiles on everyone's faces as we did this. men laid down tools or whatever they were carrying and participated. most having a satisfied smile on their face as they picked up their stuff and continued down the road. one really athletic looking guy took the ball and the pointed me to the goal. everyone shouted with glee as i took my place. they guy then kicked a laser past me that i barely flinched on. much fun

The kids break my heart, I want to take them all home with me and snuggle them and bake them cookies.

message 84: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Your lack of goalie acumen SHAMED our country, Kevin...:)

That's one thing I love about soccer...all you need is a round object and a couple things that can be goal markers...

You should've come out and either challenged the shooter or cut down the angle, made the stop, and then pointed at HIM.

THAT would've been fucking awesome, diplomacy be damned.

Maybe next time, nancy boy.

message 86: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments yeah, instead i had reflexes of jabba the hut as i watched in my peripheral vision as it ricocheted off the cement blocks behind me. come to think of it he did no fakes, dekes or anything. just eyeballed me and shot one stick side past me. i will say the trees/goal were about 12' apart and he was maybe 15' away 20' max

also the fact that i had just eaten enough dinner to feed 7 Haitians made me somewhat lethargic and the empty candy bar wrappers hanging from my pockets may have infuriated him to a higher perfomance

I'M KIDDING! SHEESH

message 87: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Some people have the ability to really rocket a ball off their foot, he may have been one of them. When I played indoor soccer I played against a guy that you would see kick the ball and the next thing you would hear it hit the wall behind you.
