Joseph (bluemanticore) | 216 comments I like to get my bookcases from IKEA. The type I have are the 6-shelves Billy bookcases http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/pro... They are relatively inexpensive and easy to assemble. I currently have 14 holding my library of over 4000 books. I've got shelves all along one wall of my living room and one wall of my bedroom. You can see a photo of some of them here: http://www.goodreads.com/photo/user/1...

Brenna Lyons (BrennaLyons) | 177 comments I buy my bookshelves from local companies that make and stain them right there in the store. More expensive than the pressboard ones, but they last much longer and hold up to a lot of abuse.

These can really take the weight of lots of books. But, you are gonna pay for the quality.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I've always thought these bookshelf/stairs were really cool. Obviously, custom made.

Gabriella (belley) I searched garage sales every week for my bookshelves.. eventually my mum stumbled upon a lady who was moving and happened to have two bookshelves. We bought stain and varnish from the markets and stained it ourselves. Only AU $50 for both bookshelves and AU $8 for the stain and varnish. Bargain.

Martina the Book Fairy (book_fairy) | 442 comments I also have the Ikea Billy bookshelves - I've got about 12 of them, but need to buy a few more. I think they're just great if you buy mostly paperbacks, but if the majority of your collection is hardback or large/heavy books or magazines then you should go with something more heavy-duty.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I got half of my bookcases at garage sales too. I bought a few but now I can't seem to find them in the stores (and not sure I can afford the new prices anyway). So my collection of bookshelves is all mismatched colors and heights, but I don't care as long as they hold books!

I really need to take a trip to Ikea. Not only are my books filling up the shevles but it leans. My fault for settly for a cheap Walmart one.

Bird (thebird) | 20 comments I've converted one of my walk-in closets to a "bookshelf." My clothes are crammed into bins underneath my bed. :)

If you're interested in seeing other people's bookcases, check out the link below. It leads to a 600+ thread of people talking about (and often posting pictures of) their bookcases. Some of them are quite impressive!

Tania I'll put in my vote for the Ikea Billy range. The brilliant thing about them is that you can buy extra shelves to customise your bookcases. Oh and doors. Oh and the bookcase lights that make my books look pretty.
And they have corner bookcases so that you can run your bookcases around your room.

Have I mentioned I really like my Billy bookcases?

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 49 comments My father made me two, five shelf bookcases about 5'x4' for my bedroom (one I keep my movies in) and I bought three smaller three shelf bookcases from Walmart. After I assembled them, I nailed a piece of plywood to the back of them to connect them as one unit for my living room. Works well enough to keep my books off the floor but they are still stacked.

message 15: by Amy (new)

Amy (amescat) | 279 comments I only have 2 small 3 shelf bookcases. I generally only read books once and then sell them to local used book stores for store credit.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I have too many bookcases to count, in most rooms of the house. lol Rarely does more than 2 or 3 match. Depends on where I got them. I got alot at garage sales, off freecycle (folks giving them away), used furniture stores, etc. Only a couple were new years ago. One I got last year my brother had that was originally in our house when we grew up that I got back. That one has all my hardbacks in it because of the size of the shelves.

Joyce (eternity21) Here is a picture of my to be read bookshelves...there are more elsewhere. I used just plain shelves with brackets. The books are doubled if they are paperbacks.Organized by author and cataloged in Book Collectorz program. This is the only area of my life that I'm a bit OCD with. LOL

I've just recently bought narrow book shelves that are made for DVD's but are just the right height for paperbacks

but have to put it together yet...so it waits until I can get hubby to do it or do it myself.

Lenore (lenorenrr) | 528 comments My grandfather owns a cabinet shop. He built both of mine. They are 6 and a half feet tall and double stacked!

message 19: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (fireweaver) ditto the ikea, only ivar for me:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/fireweav...

they come unfinished, so you can do them in whatever color you want. the shelves link into each other, so you can make continuous units as long as the wall is. of course, that pic was a couple years ago, and there's even more books now...

I'm another Ikea fangirl, but I'm a cheap one right now. I use the Kilby bookshelves (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/pro...), but alas! I have no photos, since I'm mid-move and all my stuff's packed away. I have six Kilby shelves, though, and I use Ikea's 25 cent plastic bookends so the top of the cases function as another shelf.

One of these days I'm going to line my walls with Billy bookcases that go all the way to the ceiling... one of these days...

Too funny! When we bought our house (15 yrs ago) we went to Ikea and got a bunch of Billy bookcases - love them! One wall in our family room is Billy bookcases. They are overflowing and we have so many books stashed in places... We need a whole room with bookcases that slide!

message 22: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (bookmoodreviews) | 511 comments yup ikea is where i got my book shelf. I should really look at getting another one, but I will have to sort my stuff out that is currently in the garage before I talk to my parents about buying one. lol!
