Chris (mulishone) | 39 comments I managed to find some deals in the Denver area used book stores. 8 Books for $15

Phillip MacDonald- Murder Gone Mad
John D MacDonald- Death Trap
James Ellroy- White Jazz
Pelecanos- The Sweet Forever
Pelecanos- Hell to Pay
Pelecanos- Right as Rain
John Sandford- Mind Prey
Thomas McGuane- The Sporting Club

Despite my finds I was pretty disappointed in the used book stores in Denver. Anyone know of a good one?

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 70 comments Have you tried thrift stores like Goodwill? I get some good deals there sometimes.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 70 comments Yeah, Heather, I agree. You have to comb the racks. Sometimes you hit the jackpot and other times...not so much.

I like the clearance section at Half-Price too. They used to have HPB in Wisconsin where I used to live. None here in Florida though. I checked and Colorado doesn't have HPB.

I also have good luck at my local library's ongoing book sale.

Chris I live in Maine and agree that its sometimes hard to find good used book stores. I am fortunate to have a few in my area. I have recently been buying online through Borders.com under usedbooks. They are connected to used book stores all over the world. Many of the books dirt cheap. You just need to pay shipping and handling. good luck

Lauren | 71 comments Not used books, but some of the prices are good at Barnes & Noble Fall Warehouse Clearance Sale online. Go to Bargain Books and you'll see the link. I'm looking at a shopping cart of 9 pb books (all mysteries) for $26 and free shipping -- although I said I really really wasn't buying more books until I got the TBRs under control. Guess I'll just donate them to the church in my area that has a fantastic used book sale in the spring. I live for that sale -- more than 40 books last year for about $25.

Jan C (woeisme) | 39195 comments I generally take a bunch of books I'm done with to my mother. She reads and gives them to her local AAUW for their annual sale in July. I generally go there for the sale and come back with a bunch of books.

The Friends of the Library group here have 2 sales a year and they are terrific. I usually end up with several bags for $20-$25.

message 9: by Bill (new)

Bill I do most of my shopping at a couple of used book stores in the Comox Valley; ABC Books, which also provides my comics and Nearly New Books. They both have a great selection of books, so I can always find something.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 445 comments Ah, the good old days when I could go to book sales with nary a care. I've had to ban myself from book sales and UBS's because I have no room to put more books, I don't care how cheap they are!

More like the fear of a family member's disapproving looks... ;-)

We have the same rule in this house! I joined Bookcroosing and BookMooch to try to implement it... I don't follow it very well either, I have a 16-book deficit right now!

I agree. I buy all my books at a local thrift store. $0.25 softcover, $0.35 hardcover, honestly, you can't beat it, and 90% of the books are mysteries.

Oh, and since I only have a one br apt, I redonate the books I've finished to the same thrift store :) I like them because they help out mentally disabled people.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 182 comments This isn't the first time this has happened, and it is becoming typical for me.

I have such a huge pile of books on my nightstand that I've told myself I WILL NOT PICK UP ANYMORE. Then one of you recommends something and I put it "on hold" at the library. I actually breathe a sigh of relief when I'm number 22 on the waiting list, BUT when it becomes available I only have three days to pick it up, or back on the shelf it goes.

So off to the library I go. I am only going to get ONE book. Don't look around. Don't browse the stacks. ONE BOOK!

Uh Oh, the "Friends of the Library" sale!!! 50 cent paperbacks, a dollar hardcover. Lugged an additional seven books home yesterday.

Can't say no to the Friends of the Library now, can you?

No...and those crafty little librarians put new ones out every week!

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 335 comments I have nevr shopped for books at Goodwill, but this weekend, I stopped at the Salvation Army and purchased 2 hardback books for $.99 each! I was very excited, I think I will check them out more often. I love a good bargain!!!

message 21: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) I am lucky in that there are two good UBS near me, Half Price Books (you can now buy books through them online) and Frugal Muse. Dangerous places to pop in and browse. I also try to hit the monthly library used book sale when I can--not that I don't already have enough books in the TBR pile.

message 22: by T (new)

T (twoo) Half Price Books online.... :-( Books for 99cents, but s/h will cost you upwards of $2....

message 23: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39195 comments Is Half Price Books really any good? I have one of those not too far from me.

It is at the shopping center where I've been getting my hair done. Maybe that's a hint that now is a good time for a new do. There is also a B&N there.
