This is not exactly a librarian related question, but is there any way to check the total number of people that have added a given book to one of their shelves?

More on topic, can we follow a book (i.e. receive notifications when changes are made to it)?

Yes. Click on a book's rating details. For example, this book has the following data:

all editions: 4.34 average rating, 64407 ratings, 16816 reviews, added by 110108 people
this edition: 4.34 average rating, 56635 ratings, 14391 reviews, added by 96281 people
