I am sure everyone has more exciting plans for their weekends than I do. Fill us in -- make me jealous.

Mandapanda Actually I'm going to a concert on Sunday at St. Patricks College in Shorncliffe Brisbane. I don't know if anyone remembers but there was a tragic shooting of a student there last year and this concert has been organised as a way to bring the school back together and also raise money for Kid's Helpline. Should be good. It's right on the water overlooking Moreton Bay and (even better) there's a great pub right next door.

Here's the blurb:
Band of Brothers Concert
Band of Brothers Arvo on the Oval Concert - 17th October 2010 1PM - 6 PM OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE and can be purchased by phoning the St Patrick's College office on PH 3631 9000 or at the door. The concert starts at 1pm through till 6pm. There will be some fantastic talent for the day including Aussie band AMY MEREDITH. A few of the old boys are coming back to play the concert as well and lots of local talent. Loretta Ryan (4BH) and Rupert McCall (Poet, TV and Radio Presenter) will be the Master of Ceromonies on the day. Fantastic prizes. Gates open at 12.15 Entry via Yundah Street. Seating will be limited so bring a blanket and hat and find your spot on the oval. It's going to be a magical afternoon. See you all there and let's raise some good money for Kids and Parents Helpline. GENERAL ADMISSION $20 SPC STUDENTS $10 KIDS 6 AND UNDER ARE FREE Thanks for your support. Kath Richardson Event Organiser 0412 772 123 [email protected]

P.S. Rupert McCall is the Aussie poet we've talked about in other threads who was invited to the US recently to recite his poem at the Ground Zero Memorial on 11/9/10. He's going to recite that same poem on Sunday too.

Way to go Mandy. You're making me want to get out more.

message 4: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) My husband and I are going to do some geocaching.

message 5: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) It is, I've heard, but you don't have to be so talented or fit. You do need a GPS. We're just beginners, and we're not doing anything with the contents of the cache, (just logging online that we found it), but it's popular out here and should keep us as busy as we want to be.

(There's a discussion of geocaching on my GR group 'Fans of Maps' and if you want to join and talk about orienteering that'd be cool, too.)

But of course we're going to *read* too - does that go without saying? :)

message 6: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) That's why we're doing the easy ones, where you go no more than a few dozen meters from the car park. :) We found two of five today. Really, we're such beginners - but it's a fresh air adventure and we Americans need more of those! ;)

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

This weekend was too extreme. Yesterday we froze our butts off, watching the kids play baseball and softball. Today the weather was divine. I spent the day outside in the garden. I installed a new letterbox with a little help from my daughter.

message 8: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) nice :)

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

There is nothing like a bit of food poisning to put you off a particular food type. Hope she recovers quickly Carmel.

message 10: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) oy, poor girl

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

The husband & son have gone away on a fishing trip and left my daughter and I to amuse ourselves this weekend.

As usual the hubby kindly volunteered me for barbeque duty for the baseball team etc. so what might have been a lovely girly weekend is ruined. He does it to me every time he goes away. Grrrrrr

Still, the two of us went out for dinner to a local Indian last night. We spent the afternoon today baking ( strawberry short cake). Tonight we’re making a home made vegetarian pizza (the boys would never eat). Tomorrow we are going to the museum. Yippeee.

Sharon (Simi) Ehcstasy On a beautiful (rare) Melbourne day - we are doing our taxes. What joy - my book is staring at me trying to entice me outside. Must stay strong.

message 13: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda I'm working night shift over the weekend so no partying or interesting stuff for me unfortunately!;D Oh well there's always next weekend...

message 14: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok, feel sorry for us. We had a storm, and the wind blew the yard swing right over the fence, onto the car, and broke the rear window right out. Swing is ok, no other damage to people or property, so thankful for that.

Sorry about your storm damage Cheryl.:(

It's Halloween this weekend. Does anyone celebrate it here? I saw lots of big pumpkins in Woollies this past week which seems to be a new thing.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I am Captain Anti-Fun in our house. Halloween is not an Australian tradition, I don't think we should celebrate it. If other people want to that is fine by me but don't knock on my door.

Sorry to hear about the storm damage Cheryl.

Sharon (Simi) Ehcstasy I am married to an American (Aussie citizen) and don't celebrate Halloween. Although I like the idea of dressing up as a witch (maybe behind closed doors). Sorry about the storm damage also Cheryl.

message 18: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Woodland | 313 comments Like Carmel, I think of it as an American 'thing' even though as a child, in England, we had duck-apple night i.e Halloween. I think it originated in the UK or perhaps Scotland & Ireland rather than England & Wales. It was never a holiday in the UK.
We never went from house to house as we were still on rationing. I think it was connected with the Catholic / Celtic celebration for the dead.
My house (in Sydney) has a gate, so this will be closed early that night :-o)

message 19: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Thanks for your sympathies about the storm damage.

We live in a child-friendly neighborhood (in America) so we kinda sorta have to participate in Halloween. I don't like anything supernatural or anything, but the costumes the kids wear are sometimes cute. I pass out mini tubs of Play-Do.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Cheryl it is great that you celebrate Halloween as it is an American tradition and a very fun one. The only reason people celebrate it here is because they see it on television, not because it means anything to us. That is where the problem lies for me, and why I am such a party pooper.

message 21: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Gail, I totally understand what you're saying, and agree with you!

message 22: by Amber (new)

Amber (ambermay_5) | 48 comments All the kids in our neighbourhood dress up & come knocking..Thanks for the reminder that I should buy some lollies for them so I don't have to pretend I'm not home :D

I don't know about anyone else but my weekend was far too short, I want it over again. :(

It's always too short...should be a 2 day working week, 5 day weekend! Hehe!!

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

You have my vote Brenda.

The weather was beautiful in Sydney this weekend. Finished with a thunder storm. late enough not to have an impact on the weekend.

message 26: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 21, 2010 02:42PM) (new)

Shoot. Saturday morning, I have the day planned.
The Plan
1. 9.00am hair appointment
2. Go to the shops to purchase a present for my daughter to take to a birthday party.
3. 11.00am Take daughter to her softball game.
4. 1.30pm Softball game finished drive daughter to party (that started at 1.00pm).
5. 1.30pm My baseball game started, I am going to be a little late. :P
6. 3.30pm BB game finished. Esky after the match.
7. 5.30pm leave post game esky to pick up daughter from party.
Voila easy.

What happened
1. 6.30am - Woken by hubby so I can get up and wish son good luck for his baseball game.
2. leisurely relax into the morning.
3. 8.00am - wake daughter (she has to come to the hair appointment with me.)
4. 8.45am - Car won't start - flat battery. :(
5. 9.00am - Cancel hair appointment :(
6. 9.01am - Ring friend to pick up daughter to take to softball.
7. 9.10am - Alert hubby to problem.
8. 9.15am - Catch train to Hornsby to buy present.
9. 10.15am - On train home, receive call to say friend throwing up violently can't take daughter to Softball.
10. 10.20 - Ring team coach he can pick her up at 11.00
Needless to say my day continued to be a shambles. We are a family used to having two cars. I didn't manage to get to my baseball game, but made the drinks after the game. So the day ended well. :)
(Except my hairdresser can't fit me in until 18th Dec. Darn it, the work Christmas party is on the 14th)

Glad your weekend wasn't spoiled by the flight delays. Better to be delayed for maintenance issues than to have maintenance issues on the way, I always say. :)
Glad to have you back Carmel we missed you this weekend.

wow, true - I just read this aloud to my family and we're all giving that nervous chuckle...

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Ha ha, sorry I made you a little uncomfortable. I like to take a practical approach to everything and never worry in advance about what 'might' happen. :D

message 30: by Neko (new)

Neko Awe, Gail..It's annoying when everything just goes to poop! :s

My plans this weekends is to plan my Christmas shopping for the following week! And maybe get my hair cut as I feel it's getting a little bit scraggy.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Waaah, I couldn't get another hair appointment until 18th December. What am I ever going to do?

message 32: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80077 comments Mod
@Gail...go to someone else..get a recommendation from a friend :)
@Laura..I have done most of my Christmas shopping online this year, first time ever, but it has been wonderful. Everything has been delivered to my door, and a lot of what I have purchased has had free delivery too!! :) Very happy with how it's gone.

Sharon (Simi) Ehcstasy You just reminded me Carmel about voting. I am also from Victoria. Can somebody please tell me who to vote for because they are two much of a muchness to me.....

message 34: by Neko (last edited Nov 25, 2010 04:14AM) (new)

Neko @Gail- Awe :( I'd go a long with Brenda's suggestion! I'm not to fussy with my hair so I just go to 'Just Cuts' and come out with a different style nearly everytime..lol None have been horrible either but I've read online about terrible cuts.

@Brenda- Oh sweet :) Free shipping is even better! This year my sister and I plan to make a basket of goodies/hamper for our parents soooo we are really going to tailor it towards them..Online shopping couldn't help which is a shame..haha.

-
Oh and while I think of it...Anyone see the news about the fake $50 notes?
You can tell by them being softer to touch, lighter and apparently the stars will come off easy if you scratch. They say if you have one you need to 'send it in' (guessing the police) and no you won't get reimbursed :/

Sharon (Simi) Ehcstasy Yes your right Carmel. Time to bite the bullet and decide.

We have our little grandson's 5th birthday party on Sunday. It is a pirate theme, and we all have to go dressed up..even Grandma and Grandpa!! :) He is so excited, because he goes to 'big school' next year!
I'm wondering how his sisters, our beautiful identical twin grand-daughters who are 10months old, will dress!!! Haha!!
Will be a fun day, lets hope the forecast rain will hold off till the late arvo!

message 37: by Deb (new)

Deb Off to our "hobby" farm for some vege gardening, dog sitting, dog walking, general loafing and trying to finish The Passage.

Roast chicken I think for Saturday night with homegrown veges.

Sunday a visit to the local farmers market where my stepson has a stall.

Nice.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Oooohhhhhh...Thank you :) I see, so it's kinda like Spring Break but Aussie style.

I don't think schoolies was around when I went to school? If it was, it wasn't a big deal as it seems to be now.

Neko Brenda, I can teach you how to post photos on here! ;)

message 48: by Neko (last edited Nov 27, 2010 03:01AM) (new)

Neko Grrr...I tried showing the code so it was easy to copy but it wouldn't..So I've also posted a JPG of the coding you need.. But when you go to post a comment just above the text are you canclick on (some html is ok) which is next to 'add book/author' and just look for the dot point called 'image' and just follow how. You can copy the html dirrectly so you don't need to write it all out too :)

And then you just grab the URL of the image from where you uploaded your photo/image and place that between the ". It's important to have the " at the start and end of the URL as it might reject the code.

I'll try and explain it further if it still sounds confusing.

Here is my example...mmm..chocolate:

and here is the code-

Of cour replace my URL with your URL and change the width and height if you want too.

message 49: by Neko (last edited Nov 27, 2010 04:57AM) (new)

Neko It'll work..

See :)

Ahh..I think i've got a way to explain it better...Copy the HTML code below..

Remove the O's from the code...It's the only way I can show you the code and you can dirrectly copy it.

message 50: by Neko (last edited Nov 27, 2010 02:37PM) (new)

Neko Wooohooo! :D No worries :)

Who's the guy? It looks like Dean from Gilmore Girls or Sam from Supernatural.
