RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, when you go for a walk, would you rather listen to music on headphones or listen to the sounds around you? A little of both? When?

janine | 7709 comments when i'm alone i bring my music with me. when i feel like listening to the sounds around me i can always turn it off. music and outdoor sounds sometimes make great combinations. some music goes really well with the sound of birds singing.

Brittomart When I walk around campus, headphones are on....always.

Jim | 6484 comments I like to do a little of both. When I walk around the neighborhood, I usually listen to music. Whenever I am hiking, it is always the sound of nature.

Suefly | 620 comments I don't usually go on nature walks, but heading out for exercise music is a must. It dulls the noise and transports me to a different zone. Although, the odd times I go out for a dose of nature, I ditch the music for a camera.

Phil | 11837 comments I would never, ever (ever!) take recorded music on any sort of walk. I'd rather listen to the sounds of the world around me, and say "hello" to random passers-by.

Sarah | 13814 comments I live in Baltimore. Not a bad part, but I still want to know what's going on around me. And I like to be with my dog when I'm with my dog.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments When I'm walking to the bus stop through town, no earphones. I want to be able to hear traffic as I'm crossing busy streets. Same with biking on trafficked streets.

But when I'm out for my afternoon walk around the baseball fields, and there's no traffic, and I've done that walk a zillion times, I listen to music.

Usually nay, I want to be alert to noises of traffic or muggers nearby. However, there are times when I'm going to walk a long distance, like along the lakefront, and there will be lots of other people around; in these cases I might listen to a long podcast.

In the city always headphones. Especially in Spain where men would always talk to me. Now I like to be quiet. Now that I'm old quiet is much more appreciated.

I love total, complete, deafening silence.

I do enjoy listening to my iPod/iPhone when I'm walking, or if I'm commuting to work via public transportation. It helps me relax and focus.

Phoenix (phoenixapb) | 1619 comments I listen to my mp3 player when I'm walking but I usually only use one ear bud, there are some creepy people around here. If I have my dogs with me I'll use both earbuds because if someone (adults only, they like kids a lot) gets within 25 feet of me they close ranks and start growling and baring their teeth at the stranger. I'll switch sides of the street to keep from scaring the bajeezus out of people.
