Charmian (clo1) | 26 comments I would like to nominate 'Guernica' by Dave Boling.

Set against the backdrop of the town of Guernica in the time of its destruction by the Luftwaffe on the eve of the second world war. Guernica is a tale of the Navarro and Ansotegui families, brought together by love and torn apart by war. Miguel Navarro flees his fishing village to make a new start in Guernica, once there, he meets and marries the dancer Miren Ansotegui. Their happiness is short lived however, when the town is bombed and Miguel is forced to rebuild his life. This book also features the subject of our current monthly read, Picasso and makes reference to his painting, 'The bombing of Guernica'.

Karen (karenf) | 20 comments I'd like to nominate The True Story of Hansel and Gretel The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy by Louise Murphy

In the last months of the Nazi occupation of Poland, two children are left by their father and stepmother to find safety in a dense forest. Because their real names will reveal their Jewishness, they are renamed "Hansel" and "Gretel." They wander in the woods until they are taken in by Magda, an eccentric and stubborn old woman called "witch" by the nearby villagers. Magda is determined to save them, even as a German officer arrives in the village with his own plans for the children.

Combining classic themes of fairy tales and war literature, this haunting novel of journey and survival, of redemption and memory, powerfully depicts how war is experienced by families and especially by children, and tells a resonant, riveting story.

Molly | 270 comments Hmmm - another great suggestion. I am intrigued by the fairy tale angle - quite creepy.
