Mike So I'm currently reading this book for pleasure and I'm absolutely perplexed by an occurrence in Chapter 34. I was unable to find anyone on the internet stating my issue, so here I am. Maybe I'm focusing on something that isn't that important, but it just seems like a really odd oversight that no one on the internet has EVER MENTIONED?! Perhaps I am dumb.

Now, can someone explain to me what happens to Albert during Chapter 34, specifically at the Italian theater? He's all amped to meet the countess that Franz knows. They're talking and Franz is looking at his Greek girl and the interesting stranger. Then all of a sudden, he's gone. Franz eventually starts talking to the countess, and escorts her home. And the next we see Albert he is in the hotel in his slippers?

I've read these paragraphs a bunch of times and I'm beginning to feel dumb. Why would Dumas have Albert just disappear?

Jim Do you have an abridged version of the book? Maybe it was something an editor decided to edit out. I don't recall what happened, but maybe I can look it up.

Since the book is public domain I've looked at multiple versions, and it remains the same.

Angie-Marie Garcia Here is something I noticed. Dante carved in the wall in his cell " God grant me justice" and when he meets the priest he asks to learn to read and write implying he is illiterate. So writer didn't think that through. Even if he knew basic Literacy he couldn't come up with words like grant and justice.

Glen I'm looking through my copy of the book now. I see no place where Edmond Dantes carves anything on his wall. Could you point out he page number?

That was in the film version with Jim Caviezel, it does not appear in the book (unless I am mistaken, but I am pretty sure as I saw the film before reading the book and was looking for it to appear in the novel).

As to the original post's question. I believe that is the part of the novel where Albert is kidnapped by Luigi Vampa. Without more to go on I can't be sure as I don't have the book handy.

Kirk I noticed question 1 from 2010. The answer is that Franz and the Countess left the theatre before the end of the show, leaving Albert there. Obviously Albert went back to the hotel at the end, and Franz found him there later.
