RandomAnthony | 14536 comments So I finally decided to take a sick day. I hardly ever do, and I feel that insane Catholic guilt when I do. But I did. I think I'm going to read and watch tv and try to not feel guilty.

My dog and oldest son are sick, too. We shall be sick together.

Do you feel guilty when you're sick? What do you do? What's the line between going to work and staying home? I also don't want to go to work, by the way, because I work in a busy building full of students and I could get them all sick...in fact, I probably caught this from them. Bastards.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i went more than 12 years of not calling in sick. not even one day. but then again i was not really sick enough to call in. it did become a streak that i liked to keep alive so there were some marginal days that i went in to work. finally about a year or so ago i got really sick and missed an entire week of work. laid in bed until i got better. i had lots of books. it was wonderful

i do have a buddy named rooster (yes, i have friends named rooster, fish and butt-butt) who occasionally says that he "calls in tired". there is honesty

message 3: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I probably went near as long as you Kevin, just never really get too sick. But when I did, I didn't feel guilty about it, and sometimes now the occasional mental health day is needed. If you are in a better frame of mind work will go better.

message 4: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I'm like you RA. I feel terribly guilty when I call in sick. I call out when one of my kids it sick, though. I don't feel guilty then but I also work from home. I want to be like Barb when I grow up.

message 5: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I don't usually work from home but I can if I need to.

Whatever happened with your job, Barb? Did you resign and get a new one? Are you still working from home?

Mayra (MayraM) | 25 comments This is off track but i was just taking a break from work and i came across this:

my theory: ZOMBIES

message 7: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) You may be right, Mayra. Amazing. Simply amazing.

message 8: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments 'A number of points surrounding this incident remain to be cleared up.'

uhhhh, yeah.

message 9: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments The reason I don't feel too guilty about it is because if I take a vacation day, or go on vacation, and something comes up that they need a question answered I am always available for them to call. They do call quite often, but never for more than a couple minutes a day.

message 10: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments this thread is making me a bit under the weather. think i'll go home......

message 11: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments This thread prompted me to check my time off and I have more than I can carry over! WHOO! That's the first time this has ever happened to me! That means I literally HAVE to take a day off for no reason or I'll lose it!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I hate being sick, and since I have my own little office, and can be comfortable there with tea and my space heater, if I'm feeling just a little icky, and not doing anything too contagious, like coughing or sneezing, I go to work.

message 13: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) If I get the flu, I'm down for the count for at least 3 days where just crawling out of bed is an effort. I'll go back to work after the 3 days off, but am no way feeling 100%.

I remember one of my bosses saying that she had no problem with us using a sick day as a mental health day as long as she didn't catch us in a store or on the golf course.

I do feel a little guilty, but then again I almost never get sick. I give the credit to VACCINES and handwashing, among other things.

message 15: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I drank a lot of coke as a kid, so I'm uncommonly healthy and popular.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Since I work from home, I don't take sick days, because even if I'm sick, I can still work from bed or the couch.

Félix (habitseven) RandomAnthony wrote: "I drank a lot of coke as a kid, so I'm uncommonly healthy and popular."

Self-deception is so danged powerful, ain't it?

message 18: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I don't know what you're talking about.

message 19: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments power off at work. i came home to work from my chair. glad i didn't call in sick today

message 20: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments DAMN. I keep hoping for the power to go out, and it's staying on. Stupid ass generators or whatever. Lucky Kevin.

message 21: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments My wife and I ride to work together, so even if the power goes out here, which it has in the past, I can't go home because her work seems to have generators to back up the generators.

message 22: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I used to take an occasional mental health day, and encouraged my employees to do likewise.

Charlotte Creech | 100 comments I remember one of my bosses saying that she had no problem with us using a sick day as a mental health day as long as she didn't catch us in a store or on the golf course.

How could she do that unless she was doing that which she had just warned everyone not to do?

message 24: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) Charlotte wrote: "I remember one of my bosses saying that she had no problem with us using a sick day as a mental health day as long as she didn't catch us in a store or on the golf course.

I don't think she meant it literally. She was just qualifying how you spent your mental health day. We received the "don't let me catch you" speech after one girl who had phoned in sick was seen by a coworker driving down the road on a motorcycle. It's a relatively small community and tongues wag.

message 25: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Creech | 100 comments Gotcha, Janice. How you spend your mental health day reminds me of the "Tasteless" filter on my work's firewall.

message 26: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) My late husband had an incredible work ethic. He built up months of sick time. He used it all when he got leukemia. He died 5 months after diagnosis, at age 50. Use the sick leave before you need it that badly. Take care of each other.

message 27: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

That's very sad, Joanne.

Hell yes. Thank you, Joanne.

message 31: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) Thanks to all of you, it's very comforting. Nov. 7th is the 14th anniversary of his death. It doesn't matter how long it's been, he's loved and remembered. I take nothing for granted. I'm a better person, wish he was here to see that.

message 32: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) thanks for sharing Joanne... hugs to you.

message 33: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments My condolences also Joanne, thanks for the advice.

message 34: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) What a nice group.

message 35: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Well, I jinxed myself, and had to take an actual sick day today. Inner ear infection that threw my equilibrium off.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Hope you feel better soon, Jim. Is your hearing muffled?

message 37: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Yes, the hearing muffled, I can live with that, but not having any balance is the hard part.

message 38: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Can you take something for it like with vertigo or do you just have to wait it out?

message 39: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments i hope you feel better soon, jim. try not to fall down any stairs.

message 40: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments smetchie wrote: "Can you take something for it like with vertigo or do you just have to wait it out?"

I'm not big on taking pills, so I will wait it out. My wife drove me to work today, but she is only going to work a half day, so I guess I am too.

@janine. - I am avoiding all stairs.

message 41: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I'm REAL big on taking pills.

message 42: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) I hope you are feeling better, Jim. being off balance with no good reason is no fun.

message 43: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Working on it, thanks.

message 44: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart I've been sick for a week! I hate this! What is wrong with me???

message 45: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24779 comments Mod
Sorry, Britt. Take fluids and some ibuprofen and go to bed! Rest, rest, rest. Monitor your temp. Did you get a flu shot this year?

message 46: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart No, I didn't.

message 47: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24779 comments Mod
Well, rest up. Orange juice, chicken soup, herbal tea!

message 48: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I NEVER get sick. The one or two times a year I might call out are for veterinary emergencies or funerals. I would love to be able to call out for a "mental health day" but I just can't. The guilt is too much. Plus, I only work 3 days a week, it's not that difficult or inconvenient to just fucking go to work when I'm scheduled. I'd rather use my PTO for a real vacation.

message 49: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

I rarely get sick...I once went 4 years without even a cold. When I do get something, it's from a toddler. Dangerous, dangerous vectors of disease.

message 50: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments Unfortunately, the migraines are frequent and chronic. I have had a migraine for 20 of the past 30 days. Now,migraines will not kill you. they just generally make you wish you would just die and get it over with. However, since the migraines have been so very frequent, I've gotten really strict about watching out for food triggers..reading labels like crazy before the migraines drive me crazy. When I was calling in 3 out of every 5 days my boss suggested I go on disability. shortly thereafter the migraines were 28 out of every 30 days and nothing seemed to help...so long as I can have 2 or 3 days headache free I am a happy camper and can cope. If I could schedule them, I'd could arrange a work schedule around them. enjoy your health people. On bad days...well, let us say dark rooms, extreme quiet are my friends. Imitrex and other drugs do not always work and may even trigger a rebound headache. Oh well, It will not kill me...and I am not dying. I get lots of bed rest. Just would rather be headache free and working for a living.
