I'm planning to, Rachel. Hopefully I'll get the time to read it this weekend.

message 702: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarsky) Finished with Gone Girl. Am now in the mood for light chicklit, so I'm reading I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella.

message 703: by shanghao (new)

shanghao (sanshow) | 128 comments I'm excited for Casual Vacancy! Currently reading Stormdancer but am already put off by the weird use of Japanese (strictly, it's not 'Japan', but still...it's too jarring for me not to notice)...

message 704: by 3clair (new)

3clair | 37 comments @Rachel: yup, that's what he told me after he checked up on the computer in Times UPH. I still have a hard time to believe it though.

message 705: by Tasha (new)

Tasha (flyaway) | 28 comments Isn't Times more expensive than the other bookstores? I haven't been able to look around, but has anyone been able to look at whether Periplus or Kinokuniya's prices on Casual Vacancy?
(super excited by the way.. XD)

message 706: by Ren Puspita (last edited Sep 16, 2012 07:05PM) (new)

Ren Puspita (renpuspita) | 244 comments Really, The Casual Vacancy cost almost 500k IDR? Dang, maybe I'll wait for the translated version. But since its not GPU who translate it, I'm still not sure.

Finish reading Dracula's Secret (Blood Wings, #1) by Linda Mercury , which is failed to impress me. The heroine try to be ass kick but fall hard to instan lust. Bleh!. And also finish Beat the Reaper (Peter Brown #1) by Josh Bazell , a nice cover.. for doctor. I expect the action since the main character is ex-assassin. But not so much.

Currently reading Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep

I decided to pre-order Casual Vacancy from TBD, especially since I got 10% discount. I expect the book to arrive in late October.
Currently - finally! - reading Gone Girl. Quite interesting so far.

message 708: by Lavalette (new)

Lavalette (lavaletteerica) | 8 comments hi, I'm Lavalette and I'm new here. nice to meet you all. right now I'm reading Inheritance by Christopher Paolini. I almost stopped reading it for it was so boring until I got to page 500s.

message 709: by Oon (last edited Sep 16, 2012 11:32PM) (new)

Oon (oonisme) | 132 comments Recently finished number9dream. Since I am a worshipper of David Mitchell, my opinion may be biased. But it is amazing :D It gave me back the joy of reading, the thing that I nearly lost and forgotten. Mulling for a review right now and am preparing to read London Fields or The Perks of Being a Wallflower or As God Commands.

Wish me luck.
Books, here come I !

@Tasha: I emailed Kino PS, they said TCV is priced @ 385k, available from Sept 27th.

Sigh, that's super ex for a book, even if it's JK Rowling...perhaps I'll hold on for the paperback..thanks for the info though

If you want, preorder it from TBD, they sell it for $27.03 but of course you'll have to wait 3 weeks for it to arrive

I think Periplus will also sell TCV at around the same price.
EDIT: oh apparently, pre-ordering now will get you a 15% discount.

Anyway, I'm reading Mockingjay. Couple chapters in, and TBH I snorted at some of the premise of the book. I kinda expect it to hit the ground running with battles of epic proportion. And I certainly don't expect to be reading words like "soundstage" nor "makeup and lighting". Oh my.

Does it get better?

message 714: by Oon (new)

Oon (oonisme) | 132 comments Reza wrote: "Does it get better?"

To be honest, I think it's the weakest of the trilogy. It lacks the novelty of the first, the suspense of the second. But then, it got the conclusion of the story. So, I think it is worthwhile to continue just for the sake of knowing the end.

And no, in my opinion it doesn't get any better.

Rachel (rachelhadeli) | 698 comments Mod
Ugh, Mockingjay was tragic!

message 716: by Listra (new)

Listra (museforsaken) | 13 comments Right now I'm reading Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. What a long way!

message 717: by shanghao (new)

shanghao (sanshow) | 128 comments I was a little overwhelmed by the mess of voyeurism in Stormdancer so am adding another 'voyeuristic' but admittedly much better written (so far) book, American Gods to the mix.

message 718: by stella (new)

stella | 7 comments Hello,

I have read Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. It's not a typical chick-lit book, awesome and heartbreaking.

I don't know if Kinokuniya has it, I bought it from bookdepository.com.

where's everybody? is this the calm before the storm that is The Casual Vacancy?

message 720: by Ren Puspita (new)

Ren Puspita (renpuspita) | 244 comments Finish reading Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep (good); Playing for Keeps (A Neighbor from Hell, #1) by R.L. Mathewson (great!!) ; Alpha Instinct (Moon Shifter, #1) by Katie Reus (okay); Street Magic (Black London, #1) by Caitlin Kittredge (good)

Now into No Proper Lady (Englefield, #1) by Isabel Cooper

message 722: by Viet (new)

Viet Vot (vietvot) | 1 comments Now i'm reading The Warlock by Michael Scott. Is there anybody here who read the same book? or maybe I just too lat eto read the scott's hexalogy..dunno..

message 723: by Samantha & Luke (new)

Samantha & Luke (samiati) I'm reading Does My Head Look Big in This by Randa Abdel-Fattah: It's a book about a Muslim girl in Australia who decides to wear jilbab full time!

message 724: by Listra (new)

Listra (museforsaken) | 13 comments Les Miserables read-along, done. Now I think I need to read The Odyssey in chevalier's speed since I only have two weeks to finish it.

message 725: by Elfira (new)

Elfira (elfiray) | 7 comments I'm still reading Gone With The Wind but I'm on a break with No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency #2, borrowed from Adhit (thx!). After around 20 pages, I had this urge to collect all books in this series haha.. (some titles are around 5$ each at Book Depository)

I must join our group reading along! Perhaps after I'm done with GWTW. This GWTW read along is my first one and I surely don't want it to be the last.

message 726: by 3clair (new)

3clair | 37 comments @Elfira: so you're reading it now. I'm sorry I haven't touched your book yet. But I will ASAP :)

I have finished Lord of The Flies and Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. If you love George Orwell's "Animal Farm", you will love "Lord of The Flies" too. And "Quiet" is good book about the psychology behind introversion. I had a great time reading those two books.

Right now I'm reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Harvard Business Review on Effective Communication.

I join that GWTW read a long, but so far still not touch it. My bad :P

Now reading The Alchemyst (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #1) by Michael Scott

I'm finishing Stormdancer (The Lotus War, #1) by Jay Kristoff tonight and will continue with Meitantei no okite

Reza wrote: "There will be people getting their hands on TCV as early as today, right? Also, the first wave of reviews are in (from The Guardian, The Telegraph, etc)"

I've read some of those reviews. Anyone hoping this would be similar to Harry Potter will be sorely disappointed. Seems like JKR wants to show that she can make a completely different story from HP. But I will hold my verdict until my copy arrives.

message 731: by Tomoe (new)

Tomoe Hotaru (saturnsenshi) | 58 comments Just started reading The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling , and there is definitely a Rowling-esque feel to the narrative. It's not usually my genre, but I'm hoping her prose will help suck me in.

3clair | 37 comments sanshow wrote: "3clair, sorry this is a lil OOT, but where do you usually get HBR? And what's the price range? Thks in advance...."

@sanshow: by HBR, do you mean the magazine? I don't buy/ have any of the magazines and I don't know about the price range. The one I read is a book and I bought it at Times UPH. I saw other HBR books there priced around 250k IDR but the one I bought was discounted and cost 80k IDR. Anyway there are a lot of discounted books in Times UPH.

message 733: by Liwin (new)

Liwin Tjoa (liwintjoa) | 47 comments Also reading The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling This one is so different from J.K.R previous books. I agree with Lynossa, anyone hoping this book to have the same effect as HP will be disappointed.

Me too...plus I don't really like hardcovers unless the cover's really pretty so I was thinking of waiting for the paperback. But I'm still looking forward to the discussion and read what you guys think of it.

@3clair: thanks for the info!

The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling adding the color as I'm starting to read this. Eventhough I'm Harry Potter fan, I'm not expecting this to be similar so I'll keep my.mind open while reading it. Hopefully I can enjoy it.

Don't forget to post your thoughts on our book discussion post!

I'm currently reading Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake. I really enjoyed the first one, Anna Dressed in Blood, so I'm very optimistic about this one. It's different to most of the YA that I read, so I really like the novelty of it.

message 742: by Biondy (new)

Biondy | 103 comments Is reading The Accidental Tourist. Gonna miss this month's book since I'll read the translation's version :D

message 743: by Thania (new)

I'm Done with The Casual Vacancy, going to finish Playing For Pizza before moving on to Will Grayson, Will Grayson

Edit: Rachel, my friend told me Anna Dressed in Blood is a bit anti-climax. Is that true?

message 745: by Sheva (new)

Sheva (kepikbadut) | 72 comments Currently reading "The Elephant Vanishes" by Haruki Murakami. I enjoyed the book so far :) it feels so good to read and sink into Murakami's absurdly awesome imagination.

message 746: by Rachel, First Lady (new)

Rachel (rachelhadeli) | 698 comments Mod
@Lynossa: I definitely understand where your friend is coming from. It is a tad bit anti-climatic. However, I think the whole premise of it is worth it. It's for sure spooky and different to all the other YA that I've read. And it's just a nice breath of fresh air. No lovey-dovey over-the-top stuff, no triangle, not corny ... just different. Which, I am aware, does not really align with my usual romance reads, but I enjoyed it a lot (surprisingly).

Yay, Will Grayson, Will Grayson! LOVED that book.

Oh, sounds just like my kind of reading *put it in my TBR list*

Skip Playing for Pizza for awhile, enjoy the scenery and culture of Parma but not the sport part. Never understand or care about American Football.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson, here I come!

message 748: by Astrid (new)

Astrid Lim (astridlim) | 9 comments Hi Lynossa, Will Grayson, Will Grayson is one of my faves, hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I didn't really get the hype of Faults in Our Stars, but I really enjoyed John Green's part in Will Grayson =)

message 749: by 3clair (new)

3clair | 37 comments I've been busy these days but finally I'm finished with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. I haven't decided about what I'm gonna read now. How about "Casual Vacancy" group reading? I hope all of you have a good time.

And this one is OOT so I'm sorry in advance :) hehe.. Will any of you go to Jakarta Jazz Festival this weekend?

Done with Will Grayson, Will Grayson! OMG that book is awesome. I can't believe I enjoy the gayessness (is that even a word?) of it. It's awesome, thoughful, funny, rude and superb!
Now what to read next? A Discovery of Witches or Catch-22?

@Eclair, I was planning to go there but late in buying the ticket and now the price is 500k. So no...

@Rachel, what about Daughter of Smoke and Bone? Have you read it?
