Just finished My Name Is Memory by Ann Brashares. I finished it in a day; I loved it so much. If you love romance, this is a great book to read.

Oh yes, good book. I read it twice, as well watched the movie. It was as nice as the book, they kept the story like the one written in the book without changing many things. The actors were also good. :)

I just finished reading If I Stay by Gayle Foreman. It was decent. Not as good as Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver which tells a similar story.

Thinking of starting The Unbearable Lightness of Being, but I thought it'll be better as group book read, what do you think?

Waiting for the decision for August read...
Finished The Ask and The Answer last week, not as good as The Knife of Never Letting Go.
Gosh, that series is depressing but awesome!

I've just finished with The Floating Islands, I have a mix feeling about this book. Planning to read Witchlanders tonight.

message 67: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) Currently reading On the Road. I am now rather displeased with the story. So...boring. Expected a travel memoir, not a rumble jumble about who married/ran away/stole/partied/had sex with whom. The best part so far is the first 38 pages when Sal - the main character - was by himself on a road trip. Things went downhill (for me) since he arrived in Denver.

message 68: by Coqueline (last edited Aug 18, 2011 01:25AM) (new)

Coqueline | 264 comments It had some tendency to drag in places. But he kept travelling from one end to the other of the US throughout the book, so hang in there, he will be on the road again soon.

While it was not a traditional travel memoir, I enjoyed the book for the free energy it contained. How life rolled spontaneously for him; how at ease he was at deciding whether to stay put or travel; how he didn't care how he got from one place to another once he decided to go. There was some part of me who wished I can travel in this manner and I guess that's why I loved the book.

It was aimless, it wasn't informative in the way most travelogues are, but I understood that the point was it portrait how he lived, and not so much about the travels.

If you want a loaded travel story, try Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance :)

Hey you Lemony Snicket readers! hehe. I know you're not talking about the Series of Unfortunate Events, but has any of you read it and finished the whole thing? I started reading the series when I was in year 7 and I can't bring myself to finish it now. I've forgotten everything and even though I've looked at wiki, I'm not exactly sure what happened at the end.

Oh, and I'm reading The Exiled Queen by Cinda Williams Chima. Back to some light reading.

message 70: by Coqueline (last edited Aug 19, 2011 01:11AM) (new)

Coqueline | 264 comments I read the whole ASOUE series, 1-13. I bought the box set2 and read series 1-12 while I was pregnant with my kid back in 2005-2006. I had to buy the last book separately (the only one on in box set, drats!) when it was published later on.

By coincidence, at the same time I was also reading Dante's Inferno (I know, I've got weird pregnancy reading mood), so it was quite amusing how both books have their own version of Beatrice and circles of hell. :)

If you don't remember what went on, you can always read it again... :p If you read that book as a child, I would recommend reading it again now. There are so many literary allusions throughout the book that children might not notice, but a well-read adult will find highly amusing.

Oh my, you WERE talking about A Series of Unfortunate Events, haha. My mind didn't click when you wrote ASOUE, that just goes to show that I shouldn't be browsing the internet at work, lol.

Wow really? Reading the whole thing again will take a lot of work but I guess in order to understand and appreciate the series, I know I have to. Well I'll save this for a rainy day, haha. I've got all the books up until The Penultimate Peril; I couldn't bring myself to finish reading it >.<

On a different note, I just finished The Exiled Queen last night and boy was it amazing! Fans of YA should definitely get on in the series; I found a hardback copy of it for only 55k at periplus! What.a.bargain. lol.

And now reading Grimm's Fairy Tales. I'm cut that I didn't get the full version.

hello people, mind if i join? right now i'm reading Robert Rankin's Brightonomicon. which if any of his past books are an indicator, promises to be a very entertaining read. have just finished Carlos Ruiz Zafon's Shadow of the Wind and Angel's Game. excellent storytelling with an amazing plot. anybody else read these yet?

Edit: putting everything on hold for Robert Jordan's Towers of Midnight. Wheel of Time precedes all. Any fellow fans? Hit me up with a friend request eh? Hehe..

Beatrice Cynthia wrote: "Dear Rachel, does the "Grimm's Fairy Tales" is something related to the Brother Grimm movie?"

sorry for cutting in, but since nobody answered this.. yes and no. the brother's grimm movie is a hollywoodized (?) version of the tales. the grimm tales are popularized children's stories which are actually based on darker, more sinister origins unfit for children. just curious, which version are you reading rachel?

Jati, I'm a fan of WoT! Hahaha. The last one I read was the Gathering Storm and unfortunately for me it was sooo hard to get through. I don't know if it's because I have really waited a long time for it, or because it's not written by Robert Jordan anymore, but everything about that series has deteriorated for me. That's why I'm not all that gung-ho in looking for the next books; if it happens to pop up in my local bookstores, sure I'll buy it. But I wont go around looking for it online and stuff. However, I will definitely finish the series. Tarmon Gaidon can't come soon enough X_X.

Oh and to your question, I'm reading this one http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12.... Did they write different versions of it? I'm actually rather confused now, haha.

i'm halfway through, and sadly i have to agree. the difference is quite palpable now that Jordan has died. still though, it has been an obsession for years, and its a shame not to follow through to the end.

about the Grimm fairy tales, you know how snow white's evil queen dies at the end? the original story forces her to put on red hot iron shoes and dances to death. also in Cinderella the evil step sisters forces themselves to wear the glass slippers by (and Grimm describes this in full Germanic gore) cutting of their toes. which considering the translucent glass properties would have probably earned themselves some grossed out stares from the prince. hahaha..

oh yeah in sleeping beauty, as she was in a comatose state (lets be honest there) the king decided to, um, do the business right then and there. which gets her to give birth (still comatose) nine months later.

anyway, those are the spoilers which i hope doesnt make anybody in here hates me. i blame this all on the books. hahaha..

message 83: by Fey (last edited Sep 05, 2011 10:41PM) (new)

Fey (feyrified) | 2 comments Just finished Zoë Marriott's Shadows on the Moon (A four and a half stars gem, I shall recommend it to every Fantasy/Fairy Tales fan, especially to those who also have a keen interest in Japanese Culture).

Now I can't quite make up my mind with what to read next. Should I resume my 18% progress of Cassandra Clare's City of Bones (this one frustrates me almost to the same level as Holly Black's Tithe, which God knows when I'll have the interest and determination to start picking up the book again) or should I continue with the first few pages of Gena Showalter's The Darkest Pleasure that I just started barely moments ago.

Hmm, I think the answer is clear enough now lol

Jati, I skipped all your spoilers of the Grimm fairy tales, haha. I'll get to them when I do :). Well I'm in Sydney right now, and I found the next WoT book for like $30. Don't think I'll be getting it anytime soon, hahaha. I'll finish it though, someday, for sure. Right now I have to commit reading A Dance With Dragons by George R.R. Martin. It's so thick! But currently, I'm reading a feel-good book, Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr. Hehe.

Hello Fey! Well, I don't know about The Darkest Pleasure, but the City of Bones is worth reading just because a movie is being made with Lily Collins in it. I stan for her like crazy. LOL. And the first two books are not so bad, I actually really liked the second. The third was horrible. Unfortunately, all the characters are pretty bad. Nothing really to love about them. Now I'm actually questioning my like for the second book. haha.

Hello Ren and welcome to the club! I love romance too :) Woah, do you get paid for reading the book? If so, where do I sign up for your job? LOL.

message 86: by Jati, Chief Dragon Herder (new)

Ignoring parts of my comments is generally considered good practice in numerous parts of the world, Rachel. Haha.. and this is weird because I have just suggested Martin's Game of Thrones in the book nominations thread. Great minds think alike? Or maybe I was just stalking you? Hmm........ :p (hint: it's probably not the second one)

And Ren, welcome to the club and I will proceed to envy you with every fiber of my being for taking my dream job. Unless romance novels are all you're allowed to read. Haha.. did you get to read a lot of those 'hot' harlequin blaze 'romance' novels? Lol.

message 87: by Rachel, First Lady (new)

Rachel (rachelhadeli) | 698 comments Mod
Great minds think alike, DEFINITELY. hahaha. Have you read any of the Game of Thrones books though? Their series is a called A Song of Ice and Fire I think.

I just finished Fragile Eternity, loved it; all in it's corny glory. It's such a light read, filled with supernatural elements and triangles. I need these kinds of books every once in a while.

Since I'm still on a holiday in Sydney, I don't have access to my TBR pile. I did purchase Delirium by Lauren Oliver from K-Mart the other day at a reasonable price, so I might start that soon.

message 88: by Ren Puspita (new)

Ren Puspita (renpuspita) | 244 comments Rachel and Jati : what publisher? Well, its a zecreeet, lol ^^. But yes, I get paid for that, even I don't mind to do it for free as long I can read book I want :). Jati, I have that job, because once I work freelance at the publisher, and when I offer to do review for book they plan to publish, they give it to me..

And.. are you tease me about "Blaze"? ;) .. Well, I'm not fans to HQ Blaze. The story is hot yes, but the plot sametimes kinda silly, that's why I rarely read it. Same with erotica genre, I choose my book to have "plot" not just non-stop making love scene :)

message 89: by Jati, Chief Dragon Herder (new)

Jati Indrapramasto | 184 comments Mod
i have read Song of Ice and Fire. it was such a good series and the reason i havent completed the series is, well, the really bad ebook copy of dances with dragons, and basically, i am still a bit pissed at George R. R. Martin for taking his damn sweet time to finish that last book. now i would have to reread the entire series just to get excited about it. still though, i want a direwolf. :p

and Ren, reading plot based erotica books as a job? there are many ways to win at life. but, damn..

message 90: by Rachel, First Lady (new)

Rachel (rachelhadeli) | 698 comments Mod
Yes, a direwolf!! Nymera or Ghost will do :p. I guess the closest we'll ever get to a direwolf is a siberan husky, right? I'm actually very anxious to start A Dance With Dragons, coz it's so thick. I hope I can focus on it.

And I have started Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Loving it so much!

@Rachel, really? I couldn't finish it, Delirium I mean, I guess I just couldn't buy the idea that love is a disease...

message 92: by Rachel, First Lady (new)

Rachel (rachelhadeli) | 698 comments Mod
@Lynossa, really? Well maybe the idea is a little bit far-fetched, but I've always loved Lauren Oliver's style of writing. She creates 'moments' between her characters and I've found many that I liked in Delirium. I'm still half-way through, but from what I've read so far, I like it a lot. :)

message 93: by Lynossa, Resident Connoisseur (new)

Lynossa | 485 comments Mod
I got to admit the writing style is okay, but plot is the most important thing in a story for me. If I couldn't buy the idea, it's pretty much a waste of time for me.
Plus, I'm not really into romance :p

message 94: by Novara (last edited Sep 12, 2011 07:03AM) (new)

Novara | 7 comments I'm almost done reading Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris. This isn't the kind of book I would normally pick up (since I didn't know the author or the genre) but my friend convinced me to read it. And oh my, it's hilarious! It's such a good book I'm about to finish it in just 2 days. I don't know whether the stories are purely fictional or an extension of his real family life, but regardless, the stories are sooo funny.

I'm starting Iron House by John Hart now. I love Hart's previous book, called The Last Child. I think this one is going to be a good one too.

message 95: by Rachel, First Lady (new)

Rachel (rachelhadeli) | 698 comments Mod
@Lynossa: Woah, if you're not into romance, then yeah, this book is not for you. Haha. I just finished it, and I loved it. I would give it 5 stars if it wasn't as predictable as it was but I forgive the author for that since this is the first of a trilogy, I think? So she's just setting up for the whole series. Lots of YA books - the first of a trilogy - are ending in this way too. Hmm.

@Novara: Ooo, I have read Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim and a few other of David Sedaris' books. (My little sister is such a huge fan!) And if you're into it, you should read Me Talk Pretty One Day :)

And now I have nothing else to read. I can't wait till I get home and have access to my TBR pile. I'm starting to miss Indo. lol.
