What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I believe this was a post apocalyptic book. Each man would have a name and a weapon. If they encountered someone else with the same name and weapon they would fight in a ring and the loser would have to change their name. Once of the characters was give a sword on the end of arm perhaps when they lost their hand? I think one guy fought with a rope which was unusual.

I read the book some time in the mid eighties

You're looking for Piers Anthony's Battle Circle series. Titles are Sos the Rope, Var the Stick, and Neq the Sword.

(and how I figured that out when I've never so much as read the back cover of the books, I have no idea.)
