Lisarenee | 7659 comments Okay, so a lady who was working at one of the library branches I frequent (she volunteers) and I got into a conversation about classic books. She was surprised that Gulliver's Travels was a classic. Apparently it wasn't a classic when she was younger. I decided it would be rude to ask her age, so I didn't.;) So I got to thinking, could I or anyone in the group spot a classic in the making? Are there any books you think in the next 20 years or more might be considered a classic? I'm thinking maybe The Book Thief. What do you think?

Sashana I haven't read The Book Thief, but I think The Kite Runner has definite classic potential.

Heather | 504 comments Wow, that's a good one. Haven't read The Book Thief yet but it sounds like it could be one.

Lauren | 931 comments I read The Book Thief and I don't see why it wouldn't be a classic. The story never dies. I'm also thinking that Snow Flower and The Secret Fan will become a classic too

Sashana I think there is a huge chance that 20 years from now Twilight will be a classic. Books that sell that much do not fade into the background. *Pause for outrage* :)

Lauren | 931 comments Haha :) Twilight = yes!

Sans Agreed!

I really couldn't spot a classic if it did the Snoopy dance, then bit me. The few "classics" I read in school I didn't like. How is Lord of the Flies a classic?? Of course, that could be the answer: If I don't like it, it'll probably be a classic some day. Hmmmm.

Samantha | 0 comments I don't know about Twilight, I think it was more of a fad that will die out after a while. That is why the movies are coming out so fast, before fans lose interest and move on.

Don't get me wrong I am a Twilight fan, I just don't think it will be a classic.
Harry Potter on the otherhand will be.

Shay | 923 comments I think we can spot all of the things that make a classic. What we can't do is see into the future. To me, it has to resonate and be meaningful for many generations. If our great-granchildren are still reading Harry Potter, it's on it's way. Even if Harry Potter (or even Twilight) doesn't become a classic, it doesn't mean that what the books are to people right now is less valid or true.

Heather | 504 comments Sashana, why pick on me? I mean, seriously, why? What, looking around, blinking at the huh stares???

Hee-hee, oh please, Twilight is the best thing to come out since sliced bread. Which I guess isn't saying much??

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 931 comments Sliced bread to Twilight... Woahhh. That's low :) Haha I like Twilight and admire Stephanie.

Heather | 504 comments LOL! It was a good series and I think Meyer started something she didn't would erupt into this! I don't think the book will be a classic anytime soon. Did you know The Wizard of Oz was panned when it first came out and now look at it. Granted it took over 50 years or so..
