Just an interesting footnote: My hubby, Fred, attended Cass Tech High. Diana was a senior, graduated in January from Cass. Fred came in as a freshman the following year. He never met her. My father graduated from Cass, it's an old, old school.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9502 comments That is interesting, Lorraine. Did Diana Ross ever return as a celebrity? I know sometimes celebs go back to visit their old schools, visit with the student body, donate stuff, that sort of thing. Was that in Detroit, btw?

Brakedrum | 1203 comments Carol, I'll tell you what I know. I first saw the Supremes on a local rock and roll show, Swinging Time with local DJ Robin Seymour. I remember Diane's slip hanging below her dress. Her real name is Diane, she later changed it to Diana when she became a diva, and boy did she ever cop an attitude. Originally, Flo was the lead singer, but she was too soul and not mainstream. Gordy put Diane as the lead. Everyone knew she was sleeping with him. Meanwhile, Flo was pressured to lose weight, was told she was nothing and she began drinking. She was fired. So, the group went from Supremes, to Diana Ross and the Supremes, to Diana Ross. She wanted to go into movies, so Gordy put her into movies. Whatever she wanted, she got and throws a hissy fit if she doesn't get her way.
Flo ended up broke and on welfare, she had I believe 3 kids. Flo died many years ago, her body was found on the kitchen floor. If I remember correctly she was diabetic. All of Motown's legends attended her funeral. Stevie Wonder and others arrived several days earlier, visited with each other and did interviews. Diana arrived at the last minute with a caravan of cars, maybe she felt she needed bodyguards. She insisted on sitting in the front row of the church and then she left town. She didn't grant interviews or socialized with any of the Motown family. That's the only time she was there. Other news: Martha Reeves is a Detroit city council member. My favorite Motown group is the Four Tops, these guys never got involved in drugs, arrests and stayed together for decades. I was saddened to hear that Levi Stubbs(lead singer) died a few years ago. I saw them on New Year's Eve in 1971. They always came home to perform on New Year's Eve.
Yes, this was in Detroit.

I loved the Four Tops, too, Lorraine. Just Ask the Lonely still gives me chills every time I hear it!

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9502 comments Can't Help Myself is my favorite ("Sugar pie honey bunch, you know that I love you..."). Whenever I hear it I flash back to doing line dances to it with my girlfriends, back in the day.

Then there's Reach Out (I'll Be There). Ooh, don't get me started!

We'll just say that Levi Stubbs & Smokey Robinson were the soundtracks to some of the best "romantic interludes" I can recall back in the day! LOL

Mary/Quite Contrary Phillips | 459 comments Ooooh...this sounds like a fun topic. What was the soundtrack to your first romance? my answer: Led Zeppelin

What about y'all?

Led Zeppelin is big for dh and me. There was a song that had the words "coolie" or something like that and my maiden name is Cooley. Can't remember the exact song.

The one song that comes to mind for my first real "romance" is, of all things, Sweet & Innocent by Donny Osmond! I can remember so clearly hearing that particular song on the car radio. For DH & me it would be Let's Stay Together by Al Green. Every time we went anywhere when we first started going out that song was on the radio.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3500 comments So many to choose from. I'll choose the sound track to Nashville, and in particular, "I'm Easy" by Keith Carradine.

One of the great refrains in popular music.
