Linda | 7 comments Hello
I am glad to be a new member of this group.
I recently discovered urban fantasy and really loved some of the books. The problem is that I am not so interested in reading books where the main hero/heroine is teenager.
Can anybody recommend me good books with adult main characters, preferably related to urban fantasy and series?
I read and loved the following books:
Meredith Gentry by Laurell K. Hamilton
Dark Swan series by Richelle Mead
Fever Series and Highlander serie by Karen Marie Moning
War of the oaks by Emma Bull

Deanne | 209 comments The Guild Hunter and the PSY/Changling series by Nalini Singh both outstanding series!

message 6: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Patricia Briggs' Mercy and Alpha & Omega series are great.

message 7: by Akaria (new)

Akaria Gale | 101 comments I'll second Patricia Briggs. Love the Alpha & Omega series. Also try Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Underwold. I like it because it includes the kitchen sink of supernatural creatures and you follow different creatures that are all part of the same universe. Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, #1) by Kelley Armstrong is the first book.

Linda | 7 comments thank you very much for all the recommendations. it is a big choice here.

Shannon C. | 69 comments Hi, some good suggestions on here! Definitely agree with:

Mercy Thompson series and spin off Alpha & Omega series by Patricia Briggs (Don't miss the anthology in On the Prowl, which is a prequel to Cry Wolf) - 4 to 5 stars

Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews - 4 to 5 stars

Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost - 4 to 5 stars (I don't like the spin off Night Huntress World quite as well as the original series.)

Guild Hunters series (UF: 4-5 stars) and Psy-Changelings series (PNR: 4-5 stars) by Nalini Singh

Chicagoland Vampires series by Chloe Neill - 3.5 to 4.5 stars

And here's a few more that I really enjoyed, in case you haven't read them yet:

World of Lupi series by Eileen Wilks - 4 to 5 stars Main character has ability to sense different forms of magic and is an FBI agent working magical crimes. She becomes mated to a werewolf. Tempting Danger

Sookie Sackhouse series by Charlaine Harris - 3.5 to 4.5 stars Good mix of mystery, suspense, humor and a little romance. Characters include vamps, shifters, Fae and more. Sookie Stackhouse

Black Jewels trilogy by Anne Bishop - 4 to 5 stars Very good dark fantasy series. The Black Jewels Trilogy: Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, Queen of the Darkness

Tairen Soul series by CL Wilson - 4 to 5 stars Very good fantasy romance series. Lord of the Fading Lands

Cassandra Palmer series (3.5 to 4 stars) and Dorina Basarab Dhampir series (4 to 5 stars) by Karen Chance Very good UF series. Cassie comes first from a timeline perspective, although I liked the new Dorina spin off books a tad better.Touch the Dark

Jane True series by Nicole Peeler - 3.5 to 4.5 stars Good new UF series with selkies, Vamps, shifters, gnomes, and lots more.Tempest Rising

Stephine (paranormalhaven) | 81 comments I alawys like to suggest the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon cause it has a bit of everything. Of course some books are better than others but over all this is one of my favorite series.

message 12: by Denise (new)

Denise (akaurora) | 59 comments I just finished the Shifter series by Rachel Vincent and was hooked. A conbination of the Riely Jensen series bite of a Cat and Bones feel to the constant activity... not necessarily sexual though...Faythe is a 'fighter' and can kick ass when needed.
This is the frist book of the series. Shift (Shifters, #5) by Rachel Vincent Shift

I agree! This is my absolute favorite series and Richelle Mead is definately one of my favorite authors.

Denise (akaurora) | 59 comments Yes I second that!!! I have read most of her books and love them all Richelle Mead ROCKS!

message 15: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (stacybinnj) | 7 comments I'm reading the Kim Harrison The Hollows books right now. I'm on Book 5 For a Few Demons More. It's an awesome series. The main character is 25. Granted she's still young but I can still relate to her even though I am 36. I'm not really interested in books where the main character is a teenager either.

message 16: by Denise (new)

Denise (akaurora) | 59 comments I finished the 3rd book of that series Every Which Way But Dead (Rachel Morgan/The Hollows, #3) by Kim Harrison and will read the rest. I like the variety but it was hard to get into the first one. It seemed like she started the book off thinking we knew more about the created world she was living in than we did. It seems like we should have known about the 'turn' and other important info. so I felt a bit lost. I like a more adult main character as well. Not really a YA fan.

Ack, sorry to have to do this, but Shift isn't the first book in the series. That one is number 5. The first book is Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent . I'll agree that it's a great series though. :)

message 20: by Enjee (new)

Enjee | 33 comments I enjoy the following non-YA series:

Cassandra Palmer & Dory Basarab series by Karen Chance

message 21: by Jennifer (last edited Jan 02, 2011 09:01PM) (new)

Jennifer Ortiz (wallaboo) | 6 comments I absolutely LOVE the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. It's basically about a wizard PI who goes about trying to help people solve their paranormal issues and is also hired help for the Chicago Police department's SI division. The main character is an adult (as are almost all of the secondary characters), and you encounter several different kinds of paranormal beings throughout the series (wizards, fae, trolls, vampires, weres, demons, knights of the cross, etc). Each book in the series has loads of action, mystery, suspense, and some sarcastic humor thrown in for good measure.

Some people complain that it doesn't get you "hooked" until after book 3, but that definitely wasn't my problem. I was hooked immediately! Although, I have to admit that each book is better than the last... and that's really saying something.

The good news about this series is that it'll be a while before you are done - there are 12 out now, and #13 (Ghost Story) is due in March or April of this year. The author plans on having a book total of somewhere in the low to mid 20's with the last 3 being an "apocalyptic trilogy". He also just released a compilation book of almost all of his short stories that appeared in other mixed-author compilation books. Each story is prefaced by a note of where in the overall story-line it fits, and should be heeded as you may reveal some very interesting spoilers out of sequence which might confuse you or just ruin some of the fun.

Very enjoyable, and highly recommended. The first book is called Storm Front. Hope you give it a go and love it as much as me. :)

message 22: by Laura (new)

Laura Night Huntress by Jeaniene Frost is my absolute favorite! I would also recommend:

Demonica Series by Larissa Ione
Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward
Rachel Morgan/The Hollows by Kim Harrison

message 23: by Denise (new)

Denise (akaurora) | 59 comments I have to agree the Night Huntress series is my favoirte too. Been reading a lot of PN books and haven't had a series beat my opinion of that one.

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 2659 comments Mod
Dying Bites, which is the first book in the Bloodhound Files series by D.D. Barant. There are 3 books out so far, with obviously more planned. Well, I'm basing that "obvious" on the way that book 3 ended.

But a really good series, set in a parallel Earth.

I am going to read Moon Called for a challeng, I have been wanting to give it a try for awhile. I tend to lean toward PNR more than UF but if it's good I'll read just about anyting. Is there any romance in the Mercy Thompson series?

There is "romantic interest" happening in the Mercy Thompson series, but no descriptive sex like PNR. Its a great series though - really great heroine and good secondary characters. And the mysteries and plots are fabulous!
